The St. Louis Rams are one of four NFL teams that have yet to sign any of their rookies. Expect that to change soon. General manager Les Snead told CBS Sports that the team expects to start talks after the holiday weekend and have the deals all done when minicamp wraps up in the middle of June. Michael Brockers, the Rams 1st-round pick, should get a four-year worth close to $10 million.
The all-out blitzing the Saints unleashed during recent seasons appears to be a thing of the past under new defensive co-ordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Spagnuolo, the former head coach of the St. Louis Rams, likes a good blitz, but he is more cautious and likes to play more zone defense. "You have to be multiple, in my opinion," he said. "I think that offenses have gotten so far advanced, and quarterbacks have gotten so intelligent about getting their side of the ball in and out of things and to the best... [Read More]
St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is a man coming off of a serious ankle injury and trying to learn his third NFL offense in three seasons according to Kathleen Nelson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. After five days of OTAs, head football coach Jeff Fisher estimated that he had installed approximately 70 percent of the offense, helping Bradford is the fact that the offense is similar to the one Pat Shurmur ran during Bradford's rookie year and the presence of a quarterbacks coach. Last year's offensive... [Read More]
Former Atlanta Falcons Pro Bowl fullback Ovie Mughelli is visiting the St. Louis Rams today, he announced on his Twitter account. Mughelli has previously met with the Miami Dolphins since being cut by the Falcons. Mughelli signed a six-year, $18 million contract with the Falcons in 2007 that included a $5 million signing bonus. He started 38 games for Atlanta in five seasons. Mughelli injured his right knee during a collision with safety Louis Delmas during a win over the Detroit Lions and was placed on injured... The philosophy that Rams General Manager Les Snead and Head Coach Jeff Fisher started with in February is that "We're not one player away." There was no way of knowing if it would take 10 new players, or 20, or 30 to get the franchise out of its massive rut. But it was going to take more than one. "The goal was, 'Let's get multiple (draft) picks so we can get multiple players to go with our free-agent crop," Snead told Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "And I think we accomplished... The Rams acquired former Oklahoma TE Brody Eldridge, a day after the Colts released him. Eldridge was an 5th round pick by the Colts in 2010. Eldridge isn't a dynamic receiver, he's an old school blocking tight end. It's most likely a long shot for Eldridge to make the final 53, but he will have his chance. If Eldridge makes the final 53, he will most likely fill the role that Billy Bajema left as the 3rd tight end, and will most likely be in the game as a blocker, or as a last option to catch a pass.
The St. Louis Rams has 39 quarterback sacks in 2011. Head coach Jeff Fisher wants the team to nearly double that total in 2012. Ron Clements of CBSSports.com reports Rams defensive end Robert Quinn said Fisher said the defense's goal is to break the NFL's sack record of 72 set by the 1984 Bears. The 1967 Oakland Raiders had 73 sacks but were an AFL team and sacks weren't an official statistical category. Quinn had five sacks as a rookie last year. Chris Long led the team with 13.
The Rams have claimed OL Jose Valdez off of waivers. Valdez (6-6, 324) spent time with the Falcons and Vikings after going un-drafted out of Arkansas in 2011. Valdez was with the Rams for Friday morning's practice.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher said Wednesday that wide receiver Danario Alexander didn't participate in an OTA practice because of a sore hamstring. There's no timetable on when he'll return to work. Alexander says he's focused on playing 16 games and welcomes the competition the team has added at receiver. "I'm looking forward to a lot of competition," said the 6-foot-5, 217-pound Alexander. "We're in the heat of the battle and we just have to separate ourselves. It keeps you driving and keeps you motivated.... [Read More]
The Rams signed veteran free agents LB Mario Haggan and OT Barry Richardson, the team announced Tuesday. Haggan played in 16 games with one start last season for the Broncos and made 23 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown. He started every game the previous two seasons, his second and third in Denver. Haggan began his career with Buffalo, where he played from 2003-07. Richardson started all 16 games for the Chiefs each of the last two seasons, he began his career there in 2008 and has 33 career starts... [Read More]
The Rams counterproposal to the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission became public on Monday, the proposed renovation includes a sliding roof, tearing down the eastern part of the building and installing an additional 6,000 seats in order to make the facility first tier. The St.Louis Rams have signed wide receiver Mike Campbell of Temple, who attended last weekend's rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, to a contract. Campbell spent training camp last year with the Jets after catching 45 passes for 724 yards and six TDs as senior in 2010.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher has confirmed that the team will not operate with an defensive coordinator in 2012. Gregg Williams would have headed the defense, but he has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL for his role in the New Orleans bounty scandal. "It's really no different than it was when this thing went down," Fisher said. "It's going to be a collective, collaborative effort."
In an effort to beef up competition for the backup cornerback position, the New Orleans Saints have added Marquis Johnson to roster. Johnson is a former 2010 seventh-round pick of the St. Louis Rams out of Alabama. He is familiar with Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who drafted Johnson in St. Louis, and will likely compete with second-year player Johnny Patrick and fifth-round draft pick Corey White for the backup cornerback spots behind starters Jabari Greer and Patrick Robinson.
Details of the St. Louis Rams proposal for the Edward Jones Dome were revealed by Fox 2 in St. Louis on Wednesday night. According to the report, first leaked via Twitter, the team's proposal includes a retractable roof. Experts cited in the Fox 2 report say that adding a retractable roof to the Dome would require major structural changes, along with a hefty price tag. Estimates predict the potential cost anywhere from $200 to $300 million, just for the roof and retrofitting the Dome. Needless to say, it figures to... [Read More]
