Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley was arrested early Sunday morning for driving under the influence and attempting to elude police. He was charged with DUI and attempting to elude police, but troopers also said Fairley was ticketed for reckless driving, no proof of insurance and having an open container. He posted $1750 bond and was released shortly after 9:00 Sunday morning. This is Fairley's second arrest in less than two months. He was arrested on April 3 for marijuana possession.
Cornerback Chris Houston made a bold assertion when he said he thinks the Lions' secondary is underrated. The unit -- which finished 22nd in pass defense, tied for the 10th-most passing touchdowns allowed and was shredded in its final two games by giving up a whopping 946 yards and nine passing touchdowns combined against Green Bay and New Orleans -- is underrated? "Definitely," Houston said. "I think so. The last two games of the season it was kind of a drop-off. We had a lot of injuries and guys trying... [Read More]
wboys cbAlthough the Detroit Lions seem relatively happy with their cornerback situation, that doesn't mean that they won't explore upgrading the talent at the position. After drafting three cornerbacks, you might expect them to stand pat, but ESPN Dallas' Calvin Watkins reports that the Lions are one of the teams interested in potentially trading for Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins. The problem for the Lions is that the Cowboys don't seem to be interested in trading Jenkins right now. After signing Brandon Carr... [Read More]
Former NFL and current Orlando Predators wide receiver Bobby Sippio was arrested Friday after his girlfriend's brother, Sergio Moore, told deputies Sippio and another man kidnapped him, beat him and threatened to kill him. Moore claims that Sippio and an accomplice picked him up at his apartment to help move furniture. Instead, Moore says they allegedly threatened him with a gun, held him against his will, and broke his nose. Sippio spent time with the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, and Detroit Lions before... NFL.com's Albert Breer reports that the Lions and unsigned franchise player Cliff Avril are roughly $2 million-per-year apart in long-term contract talks. Avril refuses to sign his one-year, $10.605 million franchise tender, so the focus is not on that number. Avril, rather, wants the $10 million-plus per year on an extension, specifically targeting a four-year deal worth over $42 million. His agents want more than half of that amount guaranteed. The Lions appear to be proposing a deal in the $8-9 million range... [Read More]
Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz said there was no change concerning receiver Titus Young's status with the team according to Anwar Richardson of Mlive.com. Schwartz, who spoke at the Detroit Lions Charity Bocce Ball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon, would not say when Young will be allowed back into the team's Allen Park facility after punching teammate Louis Delmas last week. "I think I addressed that a couple of days ago," Schwartz said. "That's the most I'm going to address it. When there is a... [Read More]
Linebacker Stephen Tulloch missed the Lions' OTA practice Monday with tendonitis in his left knee and it appears he will be out awhile according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. Coach Jim Schwartz said, "Tulloch will not participate through May, and after that we will take it as it goes. He had tendonitis and we did an injection to settle it down. He's not weight-bearing (on his leg) right now. We will get it settled down and there won't be surgery or anything like that."Schwartz said there were others... [Read More]
Typically, NFL teams do everything they can to ensure outstanding attendance at their offseason workouts, which are voluntary with the exception of one mandatory minicamp, but the Detroit Lions have asked one player to stay away from OTA’s, which began today for the club. Wide receiver Titus Young is being barred from participating after he sucker-punched teammate Louis Delmas during a voluntary workout last week, according to Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. Young, who got a senseless personal foul the last time the... [Read More]
"I'm back," that's what second year running back Mikel LeShoure shouted to his teammates on Monday as OTAs kicked off in Detroit, according to the team's website. Leshoure is understandably thrilled to be playing football again. Last year's second-round pick tore his Achilles in 2011, he was subsequently arrested twice on marijuana charges in 2012, which brought his future in the team into question. Detroit's backfield is full of question marks with LeShoure and Jahvid Best in the mix and yes, Best was on the... [Read More]
Matthew Stafford wound up being the winning bidder for an auction item he put up himself, no, this is enough like the auction of a Lawrence Taylor Super Bowl ring over the weekend. Stafford, the Detroit Lions quarterback, chipped in tickets and transportation for a trip to a Monday night game in Chicago in October. Then, he stepped up and delivered the winning bid of $15,000, purchasing the package for Faith Falzone, a patient at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. Falzone is having surgery this... [Read More]
The Detroit Lions ranked 22nd in pass defense last season, which should have sent the team into panic mode after losing starting cornerback Eric Wright to a five-year, $37.5 million contract from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Lions did not panic by trading for Asante Samuel, a player they nearly had a deal for last August, and will instead count on returning starter Chris Houston and young players Alphonso Smith, Aaron Berry and 2012 draft choices Dwight Bentley (third round), Chris Greenwood (fifth round) and Jonte... Christian Bollmann, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound receiver considered the top pass catcher in Germany, will work out for the Lions today, his German Football League coach Phil Hickey said. Bollmann is a relative unknown in scouting circles, but he appeared on the Lions’ radar last week thanks to a long-standing relationship Hickey has with Lions general manager Martin Mayhew that dates to their days together in the XFL. Amid exploring Bollmann’s... [Read More]
For a second consecutive year, the Detroit Lions used a second round draft choice on a wide receiver -- Oklahoma's Ryan Broyles -- with the skill-set to make plays from the slot. No. 2 tight end Tony Scheffler frequently played in the slot in Detroit's two-tight end personnel groupings last season, but he's not worried about losing playing time to Broyles, reports Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. "It's one of those things in the NFL where you learn to take care of your business and, as long as I do my job,... [Read More]
