Gary Kubiak Concerned About Injured Texans LB Whitney Mercilus
No veteran starter needs the preseason more than outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus.
Mercilus, last year’s first-round draft choice who registered six sacks, starts on the weak side in place of Connor Barwin (Philadelphia). He’s been sidelined with a strained hamstring and has missed the first two preseason games as well as valuable practice time.
“We’re concerned because we thought he would definitely be back today,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “We were working all along toward New Orleans (Sunday). That doesn’t mean we’re still not going to get there. It’s only Monday. We start our week on Wednesday, but Whitney’s a very young player. He needs to play.
“We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do to get him healthy.”
Rookie Justin Tuggle has started the first two preseason games in place of Mercilus.
