Seahawks DE Bruce Irvin, OT James Carpenter Won’t Play At San Diego
The Seahawks had hoped Bruce Irvin could play strongside linebacker in exhibition games before he has to miss the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
That long look, though, will now have to come in only three preseason games because Irvin will not be able to play when the Seahawks take on the Chargers on Thursday in San Diego.
Irvin, who played defensive end last season but will also play some at linebacker this year, has been sidelined lately with a groin issue. Carroll said that the injury doesn’t appear serious, but Irvin he won’t be on the San Diego trip.
“Yeah, I’m disappointed and so is he,’’ Carroll said. “We are frustrated by that. These games are really important to him. He’s one of the guys that has a chance to really show something in this little bit of a transition to playing SAM backer for us. We did everything we could to get him back — he’s really close — but it’s not the right thing to do to play him right now.’’
Also out is left guard James Carpenter, whom Carroll said is dealing with a foot strain suffered earlier this week in practice.
“He has a strain in his foot unrelated to anything else he has had,’’ Carroll said of Carpenter, who had offseason knee surgery. “He has had this before in the past in college, so it did show up. We are going day-to-day with him on it but we don’t know how long it is going to take. He is responding already to treatment and he is better than he was the first day, so we will see how it goes.’’
