Geno Smith Has Not Shown 'Diva' Tendencies, According To Rex Ryan
After Geno Smith’s opening performance at minicamp, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said the team hasn't seen “diva” tendencies in the quarterback.
Since the draft, Smith has been heavily criticized by unnamed NFL executives and scouts for being aloof and spoiled. But Ryan said the Jets don't agree with that assessment based on their meetings with and study of Smith, who fell to them in the second round.
“Maybe I don’t know what diva behavior looks like, but he certainly didn’t do it here,” Ryan said in a Jets press conference via ProFootballTalk.com. “He’s a football player that you can tell loved the game, very knowledgeable about his system. I never saw that at all.”
The critics of Smith have also questioned his ability to lead and willingness to learn. But Ryan said after completing their research on Smith, the Jets found that Smith was a good leader at West Virginia and a student of the game.
“Anybody that you talk to at West Virginia will tell you that,” Ryan said. “He knew it. He studied it more. He prepared harder than anybody. That’s all, just be himself, that’s the big thing, he already knows how to do it. This guy has been playing quarterback and (has been) the leader of his football team for a number of years.”
