49ers Release PK David Akers; Create Cap Space
David Akers’ wildly up-and-down, two-season tenure with the 49ers came to an unsurprising end today when the 49ers released the 38-year-old placekicker who is coming off the worst season of his decorated career.
Akers, who finished 30th in the NFL in field-goal percentage in 2012, was due to earn a base salary of $3 million. His release, combined with the trade of quarterback Alex Smith to Kansas City, will free up about $12 million salary-cap space.
“The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years,” general manager Trent Baalke said. “He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best.”
A member of the NFL’s all-decade team (2000s), Akers’ 2011 season added to a sparkling resume that features six Pro Bowl berths: He set NFL records for field goals (44), attempts (52) and points without a touchdown (166). He also made 7 of 9 field goals from 50-plus yards, including a Candlestick-Park-record 55-yarder against the Cowboys.
