Bears WR/KR Devin Hester Will Have To Compete For His Job
Bears general manager Phil Emery called Jay Cutler a "franchise" quarterback. Coach Marc Trestman wouldn't go there.
While the men may differ somewhat in their view of Cutler, they're in lockstep when it comes to Devin Hester, who has suggested he might seek a trade after announcing the day after the season that he could be done with the game.
"Devin is a very versatile athlete," Emery said. "Right now, he is our returner, and we're looking forward to him working with us in OTAs and see how we come out."
Said Trestman: "Right now, he is back. He'll go out there and compete to be our returner. What he does beyond that depends on how he performs in that first role as a returner."
The Bears probably couldn't get a lot in trade for Hester, 30, so it makes sense to bring him back and see if he's committed to making a strong comeback under a new coaching staff.
His base salary and workout bonus total $2.1 million and his cap number is $2.9 million, so neither figure is prohibitive to getting a spot on the 53-man roster. But it's clear he'll have to be electric in the return game before he is considered at receiver or sews up a roster spot.

He's always wanted to be more than just a returner so this aught to piss him off to no end.
& if he doesn't get back the return magic, he's gonna be a casualty of the new regime.

Some guys were born to be special teamers and Hester is one of them. There is no shame in that. There is no more exciting play in football than a kickoff/punt td return. I'm glad he's going to have to compete for a job. That means be better bring it and get back to Hester of old and if he doesn't win the job, see ya.
Thanks to 86WARD for the sig!
Help out GIF...ask me how!
