Panthers To Be Sold After Owner Jerry Richardson's Death
Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, 76 years old and four years removed from heart-replacement surgery, has mandated the NFL franchise be sold two years after his death, Erik Spanbert of the Charlotte Business Journal reports, this according to a source close to the team.
The revelation marks the first time details have been disclosed about the Panthersí fate beyond the life of Richardson, the founding owner. Mark and Jon Richardson, his sons, worked as Panthers executives before Jerry Richardson forced them out in 2009, until then, everyone assumed Mark and Jon Richardson would own and operate the team after their fatherís death. Since then, Richardson and the Panthers have declined to disclose succession plans.
This revelation comes at a time when the Panthers are seeking public funds for $125 million in upgrades to Bank of America Stadium, the concern is that if tax money is used for upgrades, there is no long term commitment and the team is sold, it could possibly be relocated.
