Aaron Rodgers Still Has Doubts About Pro Bowl
When NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stopped by the Green Bay Packers’ training camp for a day last August, quarterback Aaron Rodgers talked to him about possibly ending or altering the Pro Bowl, Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports.
Rodgers wants the league to do something after his experience in the Pro Bowl last season, when the AFC blew out the NFC in a game that featured especially poor quality and intensity of play.
Rodgers said he doesn’t know whether the league will end or in some way substitute the Pro Bowl after this season’s game, but his read on Goodell was that something might change in the relatively near future.
“I think there was an understanding,” Rodgers said of Goodell’s reaction. “I think he understood where I was coming from.”
Rodgers on Wednesday said the Pro Bowl after the 2009 season was more like “real” football, in large part because defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, then of Tennessee, was playing full speed. That forced the players blocking him to increase their effort, and that effect filtered through the rest of the players, at least to a degree.
“I just felt like the intensity level was higher (in 2009),” Rodgers said. “You didn’t see a ton of big hits or anything, but you didn’t see some of the efforts or lack of effort we saw last season. On the flip side, I understand. Drew (Brees of the New Orleans Saints) was playing without a contract, and some of these guys didn’t want to be out there. I understand that. But if that’s the case, then maybe we shouldn’t have a game at that point.”

eh, it was better a few years ago aaron but really this pro bowl thing has been going downhill for many years. i haven't watched one in 10+ years. it was pretty bad going back to the 80's and 90's but, amazingly, it's even worse now. now, guys are just walking through the plays. i'm not sure even going back to 1/2 speed is going to save this game. people know what full speed looks like and even 1/2 speed looks stupid.
