Richard Dent Says Mike Ditka To Blame For 1985 Bears' Failure To Repeat
Hall of Fame defensive end Richard Dent blames Mike Ditka for the Chicago Bears' failure to follow up their Super Bowl XX triumph with more championships.
Appearing Wednesday on the "Mully and Hanley Show" on WSCR-AM 670, Dent was asked if a Super Bowl victory by this year's Bears team would take any luster away from the 1985 team's achievement.
“Well, we are going to be king of the hill all the time," Dent said. "It doesn't matter. I was on a team that took on the world. It wasn’t just winning the Super Bowl. Hell, we got a gold record. We got a platinum video. We talked about it and we did it.
"And we came back three years in a row and had home-field advantage. Our coach couldn’t figure out the right quarterback to play. The disappointing part to me is that we only got one out of it. We should have been the first team ever to win three Super Bowls in a row. It was there in the taking, but we didn’t manage that one position right."
Asked whether the departure of defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan also might have been a factor in the team's inability to repeat, Dent kept his finger pointed at Dikta and the quarterback spot, where the Bears were forced to improvise due to injuries to starter Jim McMahon.
"Mike didn’t manage that quarterback position," Dent said. "Bringing Doug Flutie in and thinking that he's gonna come in and be on a team for three weeks and start him in a playoff game? Hell, I mean you're trying to change the name on the Super Bowl trophy to Mike Ditka from Vince Lombardi when you do something like that.
"We had won with (Mike) Tomczak and (Steve) Fuller. That’s all we needed to do is stay with that plan."
The Bears were beaten in the playoffs in each of the next two seasons by the Washington Redskins.
"We played the Redskins and (Washington cornerback Darrell) Green had told me, 'Hey man, I heard you guys are gonna start Doug Flutie.' I said, 'Hey, we're just gonna back up, man. We’re gonna back up.' We said, 'Hey, we know he can’t see.' Hell, we didn’t give up that many points, but hey you know, we should've won (more than) one, but the one we won is bigger and better than anybody ever won.”
