Lions FS John Wendling Fined For Hit Against 49ers QB Alex Smith
Lions safety John Wendling was fined $7,875 for his hit on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith this past Sunday.
Wendling hit Smith's helmet with his forearm, which resulted in a gash across Smith's nose in the final minutes of the 49ers' 27-19 win. Despite the hit, Wendling was not flagged by referees for his infraction.
Smith talked about the blow after San Francisco's win.
"I wouldn't say dazed, just bleeding," Smith said. "I looked up, saw the flag and thought for sure it was a personal foul call, but all of a sudden we were backed up, and it was a holding call. I was pretty stunned we didn't get that call."
However, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh was not upset about Wendling's hit on Sunday night.
"Yeah, when he was sliding he got cut over the bridge of his nose and forearm to his head when he was sliding," Harbaugh said. "But, I think the story of this game, it was a physical game. It was a physical contest. I thought it was a well-played game. And pretty clean for the most part. And good, competitive match. And our guys sucked it up and finished it, and that's what we're most pleased about."
