Sources: Auburn to name Chizik as coach

Iowa State coach Gene Chizik has been hired as the next coach of Auburn, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a statement released Friday that his understanding is that Chizik -- the Tigers defensive coordinator from 2002-04 -- had met with Auburn officials and was a serious candidate for the job.

Chizik was unavailable for further comment Friday.

This one confuses me. I get the tie-in but, they couldn't find a better candidate?

This came as a total shock.

I had high hopes for Gene Chizik, with Iowa State, as did a lot of other Cyclones fans.
I really hope he fails at Auburn, now.

Lots of Iowans feel the same as you do CO2. He ditched the clones in the blink of an eye. I understand he's from Auburn originally but I expected hin to get the ISU program turned around before he went anywhere. The man's record at ISU was 5-20 I believe and he's the best Auburn could get??

I just hope the new coach, whoever it may be, decides the new Iowa State logo looks as bad as I think it does. It needs to go!

We're Iowa State! Not I State.

That's correct, but he was working on making them better. You have a good point, though.

I have to wonder what the Cyclones would look like, with all his recruits on the field. Maybe it's best he left when he did.

As long as the next coach can get a team together, that can beat the Hawkeyes, things will be good.

Word on the street around here is Buffalo's Turner Gill was wanted by some in the program but ultimately not considered because he's a black man with a white wife.

I know Chizik had ties there but I find it hard to believe that he's the best possible candidate for the job. He didn't get much acomplished at Iowa State in 2 years. In fact one of his two qb's left the program. I know there are a lot of ISU fans that feel taken advantage of but I'd be saying good riddance if I were a Clone fan. Dan McCarney was a better coach than Chizik. IMO
