Coach Derek Dooley confirmed Monday afternoon that Vols sophomore strong safety starter Brent Brewer is out for the season with a torn ACL. Dooley said Brewer, a former minor league baseball player, will “probably” be out for six months — which could put spring practice in jeopardy. “Brent Brewer tore his ACL, so he’s out for the year,” Dooley said. “It’s unfortunate, but we’ve got to put the next guy in and go play.” The loss of Brewer is another serious setback to what Dooley freely admits is a “tough, tough month we’ve had.” “But we’ve got to put it aside and keep working on the things that we’re showing some progress on — and there are some good things — and we’ve got to find some solutions on how to score some points,” the coach said. The Vols will move versatile, All-SEC defensive back Prentiss Waggner from cornerback to free safety — where he started the season’s first six games — and true freshman Brian Randolph will move from free safety to Brewer’s vacated strong safety spot.
