New Gator Head Coach Will Muschamp To Target Bama's Kirby Smart For DC Job

New University of Florida coach Will Muschamp is expected to target Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart as the top candidate for the defensive coordinator position on his staff with the Gators, sources familiar with the situation have told The Tuscaloosa News. It is not known if Muschamp has already offered the position to Smart, who could not be reached for comment. Smart, who last year won the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach, received a raise to $750,000 a year in February after Georgia made a big-money offer to him to fill its defensive coordinator vacancy. Alabama head coach Nick Saban spoke about Smart's career path when announcing that Smart had decided to turn down Georgia's offer. "He's done a fabulous job for us," Saban said. "He's one of the finest assistant coaches in the country. You expect guys like Kirby to get lots of opportunities to do things, and we want to continue to help him continue to develop his career here so that when he leaves here its' going to be to be a head coach and probably in a very good situation."

Twitter is picking up something on this.

Quote:
One of ESPN’s twitter accounts, ESPN_MobileCFB, posted a few minutes ago that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart “is reportedly to leave for same job at Florida.” We can’t find any official confirmation, but according to TideSports.com (The Tucsaloosa News), the job has been offered. According to The Tuscaloosa News, Smart and Muschamp have been in discussions about the job in recent days. Read more here. And stay tuned.

I don't get why Smart would leave. Unless he has full control he will face the same criticism he does in Bama which is he is a DC in name only.

I didn't know this until today but I guess Smart and Champ are really good friends. Only thing I can see in the Gators favor. Hell didn't UGA throw a shit load of money at him last year and he stayed with the Tide?
