49ers Unlikely To Re-Sign LB Manny Lawson?

It's difficult to project linebacker Manny Lawson as a member of the 49ers in 2011. The 49ers have been decisive about identifying the players they see as long-term pieces of the puzzle. Lawson wants a new contract, but the 49ers have been less-than enthusiastic about making it a reality. Lawson certainly has some value but he's looking for something like Calvin Pace's six-year, $42 million ($22 million guaranteed) deal from the Jets. The 49ers are hoping Ahmad Brooks can show he's more than just a one-down player so it won't hurt as much if Lawson is playing his final season with the 49ers.

Do you really need a 10 sack guy when you are 3rd overall in the NFL in sacks? My buddy dropped that on me yesterday and I didn't believe him, I had to look it up to confirm, but yep the Niners were 3rd overall in sacks. All the games I saw it seemed like there was minimal qb pressure, but the stats don't lie I guess.

Problem is were in the nfl west...a lot of those sacks came there. We did sack manning once or twice which no one had done to that point. We really need that stud pass rusher because IMO that would make the niners D championship caliber.

I honestly feel like it's already a championship defense without a big pass-rusher. Maybe not 2000 Ravens carry the whole team caliber D, but more than enough to win a SB with a good offense. If you guys had a top QB I really believe you would be legitimate NFC contenders, and I hate to say that, believe me. It was a lot more fun for me when you were anchored firmly in the cellar.
