Mike Tomlin Concerned About The Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin expressed anxiety over sexual assault allegations leveled at quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, telling NFL Network's Jennifer Allen Saturday, "I'm highly concerned for our franchise and for Ben personally." Tomlin was careful not to say too much about the situation, acknowledging that the Police investigation is ongoing. "My concerns are many, but I think at this time it's kind of appropriate to watch these things and let these things run their course," Tomlin said after arrving in Orlando for the annual owners meetings. "I think it would be inappropriate for me to have strong feelings one way or another with the investigation being ongoing and so forth," Tomlin said. "Like everyone else, you watch these things unfold." Tomlin's statements echoed what Steelers president Art Rooney told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Thursday. "I mean, look, that's one of the things, we do have a little bit of luxury of time," Rooney said. "If we were at a different point in the year, we may have to be thinking and doing something different. But at the moment, I think we're in a situation we're going to let this investigation play out and then go from there."

Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh Excited After His Visit With The Lions

It's unclear whether Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will become a Lion when the No. 2 pick in April's NFL draft is announced, but the star Nebraska defensive tackle has left Detroit with positive feelings about the possibility. "From talking to him, he was very excited," Suh's agent, Roosevelt Barnes, said Friday in an interview with the Web site Mike O'Hara Sports. "He just felt really good about the whole visit." The Lions, however, have to hope Suh slips past the St. Louis Rams, who hold the top pick in the draft and most draft analysts have the Rams choosing Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford at No. 1. Suh has not given up on being the first pick, though. "Not at all," Barnes said. "St. Louis hasn't made a decision yet. St. Louis is still in play."

Cardinals Were Interested In Trading For LB Kamerion Wimbley

The Arizona Cardinals were among the teams interested in trading for former Browns linebacker Kamerion Wimbley but the big holdup with them, like other teams, was Wimbley's contract. Wimbley has voided the final year of his deal through performance incentives and there are buyback provisions built in, but as things stand, 2010 is his last year under contract. The fact he can be a free agent in one year hurt his marketability and Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt did not want to give up a high draft pick for Wimbley without a longer-term deal in place.

When Philadelphia released former No. 1 pick Shawn Andrews, an accomplished lineman, the natural assumption was that Browns GM Tom Heckert, who was GM when the Eagles drafted Andrews, would be interested but that's not so. Heckert is well-versed in Andrews' off-field issues with depression and injuries.

A.J. Smith Says Chargers "Fell Into" Trading Charlie Whitehurst

Charlie Whitehurst was the little-known and even lesser thought of No. 3 quarterback in San Diego, behind starter Philip Rivers and backup Billy Volek, and four years into his NFL career, he's still waiting to throw his first regular-season pass. But that didn't stop the Seahawks and Cardinals from getting into a bidding war of sorts over him, a war Seattle wound up winning by swapping second-round picks with San Diego (the Bolts make an eye-opening jump from the 60th overall pick to the 40th) and sending the Chargers a third-rounder in 2011, then awarding the unproven ex-Clemson product a two-year, $8 million contract that includes another $2 million of incentives. Wanting to know more about Seattle's would-be savior, Don Banks of Sports Illustrated called Chargers general manager A.J. Smith on Thursday afternoon. "We just fell into it," Smith said of the trade talks that emerged after San Diego tendered Whitehurst, a restricted free agent, at a third-round level (his original draft slot). "We tendered a third, at a $1.1 million (salary) this year, [thinking] if he returns to us this year, we'll have the same rock and roll band again this season with Rivers, Volek and Whitehurst. But now here comes the activity, and it's between Arizona, which had a standard third-round pick, and Seattle. But there's a little bit of a twist because the Seahawks didn't have a three. So I presented a package to them that I thought was attractive to us, and it's accepted. They wanted the player. And that's how it went down. I think they liked him in Clemson and they tracked him through college and in the preseason. They've done their research and made a judgment. They've looked at his intangibles, his background, where he's been trained, what kind of a guy he is, and what his study habits are. I think that's all positive. I think the only thing missing is the body of work as an NFL player."

Raiders Could Have Interest In Ex-49ers GM Scot McCloughan?

Jerry McDonald of The Oakland Tribune reports that the signals in the Scot McCloughan story are so mixed and confused it looks as if he could wind up in Oakland. McCloughan's father, Kent McCloughan, was an All-AFL Raiders cornerback and remains a Raiders scout, while McCloughan's brother Dave, also worked for the Raiders. Scot understands how Davis thinks, and having been a general manager, would be willing to speak his mind and disagree, but despite the popular perception, Davis invites dissent and debate.

After the commissioner's office, without any team representatives present, flipped a coin to determine which New York team gets to host the first game in its new stadium (a coin toss won by the Giants), Jets' owner Woody Johnson released a statement that included the following: "An NFL coin toss has a few fundamental elements that are missing here, most notably the presence of the teams involved. That's how it's always done in the league, whether it's determining the order of the draft or deciding who's going to kick off the game. When the issue of which team would be hosting the first regular-season game could not be resolved on the merits, I suggested a coin toss as the fairest way to resolve this issue. The league rejected that idea. Then, I was told on Friday that a coin toss had taken place at the league office and that the Jets had lost. We rejected a process in which neither team was present. The league departed from our time-honored tradition and declined the opportunity to set the matter straight with a transparent process." Mike Tannenbaum joined Brandon Tierney on ESPN New York to discuss the coin toss and his thoughts on the subject. "Woody's statement speaks for how we feel," Tannenbaum said. "He was passionate about it for our fans. The way I look at it is, Brandon, that it is up to me and our staff to put the best team together to go win that Monday Night game on opening day. We are really excited about the stadium. Obviously, we are really disappointed with how that occurred, but now we are moving forward and really looking forward to opening up with a win on that Monday Night."

One day after Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said he won't just hand the starting quarterback job to Matt Leinart, the former first-round pick said he's ready to fight for the job. "It's my time and I know that," Leinart told KTAR-AM on Wednesday. "I'm working my butt off to get ready." Leinart became the presumptive starter for the Cardinals after Kurt Warner's retirement in January, but the 10th overall pick in 2006 has been unable to play at a consistent level since entering the league. Whisenhunt said he will bring a veteran quarterback to the Cardinals to compete with Leinart for the starting job and Leinart said he'll welcome that. "Competition makes you better, I'm aware of that," Leinart said. "To be honest with you I'm not really worried about anything. I don't know if that's cockiness or not. "I'm confident that I can do it. I've been in the system for three years. To me it doesn't really matter because I'm focused on my job."

Lions officials reportedly met with Adam (Pacman) Jones before the troubled free-agent cornerback turned in what was apparently an impressive 30-minute workout for several NFL teams Friday. The Lions and 49ers are considered to have the strongest interest in Jones, 26, who played for the Titans in 2005-06 when Lions coach Jim Schwartz was their defensive coordinator. Jones has had several off-the-field conduct issues, was suspended by the league for the 2007 season and has not played in the NFL since Dallas released him after the 2008 season.

Linebacker Joey Porter agreed to a three-year contract Friday with the Arizona Cardinals, after making the Washington Redskins his second visit. "It is exciting on many levels," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "Two areas that come to mind are his productivity on the field, (because) getting 26½ sacks over the last two years is pretty impressive, especially considering last year with not even playing a full season. Also the mentality he brings, it's something we have made great progress with as a team. Having another veteran player, who has had great success in this league, to contribute to that will only help us in an area defensively where we want to improve."

Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne has been consistent in saying he sees improvement from Miami's current WR corps. He believes in those guys. But Henne admits he wouldn't mind the group being improved with a proven player. "There's definitely guys out there, like you said," Henne said. "There's T.O. [Terrell Owens]. There's Brandon Marshall. There's guys in the draft. Where we're at, we have a bunch of young guys who are definitely learning and going to be explosive in the next coming year. But you need kind of a veteran guy that's really going to take hold of our young guys and teach them the right ways."

Seattle currently holds the No. 6 and No. 14 picks in the first round. "Where we are now, a new culture here and everything coach Carroll and his staff are preaching, we're going to be looking at everything," Schneider said.

The National Football League is "following developments" in Roethlisberger's legal situation, a spokesperson said. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has taken a hard line with players who tarnish the league's image, but the league rarely suspends a player unless he is convicted of a crime.

The Titans filled a hole at linebacker, where Keith Bulluck is a free agent and is recovering from a torn ACL, by signing well-traveled Will Witherspoon to a three-year, $11 Million deal. Witherspoon should move right in as a starter at outside linebacker. Even if Bulluck were to re-sign with Tennessee, chances are he might not be recovered from his torn ACL in time to start the season.

Chargers Trade QB Charlie Whitehurst To The Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks agreed to move down 20 spots in the second round and part with a 2011 third-rounder to acquire quarterback Charlie Whitehurst from San Diego. The price is a bargain if Whitehurst turns into a good starter for the Seahawks after signing what is expected to be a two-year deal worth about $5 Million annually. Assuming Matt Hasselbeck remains in place, this move could diminish the likelihood of the Seahawks drafting a quarterback in the first round.
