Titans Optimistic About RB Chris Johnson Bouncing Back From Poor 2011

The Titans are optimistic about Chris Johnson rebounding from a disappointing 2011 season. Johnson's holdout last summer helped contribute to a very slow start to the season. His 1,047 yards and 4.0 yards per carry were the lowest totals of his four-year career and caused many people to question the wisdom of the big deal the Titans handed Johnson. "C.J. has worked very hard," Tennessee offensive coordinator Chris Palmer said. "He is here, running hard and working hard. I'm very optimistic about how he's going to perform this (fall)."

Picking a starting quarterback can be a difficult proposition, but for the Tennessee Titans, choosing between Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker could come down to a simple "gut feeling." Titans general manager Ruston Webster said that the team is keeping a close eye on the veteran Hasselbeck and the rising star Locker as they compete for the top job. "It's very detailed," Webster told The Tennessean. "Stats are a part of it. But like I've said before, I'm not a huge stats guy. It will probably be a gut feel more than anything else. I think they'll both do well. But I think it will be a gut feel, so you kind of just go with what you feel is best -- (the player) who, in a tight race, we feel like has the best chance to help us win, even though we're comfortable with either one of them." The 36-year-old Hasselbeck has 13 years of experience in the league. He started 16 games for Tennessee last season, completing 319 passes for 3,571 yards and 18 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. Locker, fresh off his rookie season, has only appeared in five games, but he completed 34 passes for 542 yards and four touchdowns with no picks.

Titans WR Kenny Britt To Undergo 2nd Knee Surgery Today

Tenneessee Titans leading receiver Kenny Britt will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee Wednesday, general manager Ruston Webster confirmed to the Tennessean. The surgery is being termed as "minor," Webster called the surgery "commonplace," Britt is recovering from a torn ACL suffered early last season. Webster has a point that many players get a second surgery during their rehabilitation from a torn ACL. That doesn't mean it's a particularly good sign for Britt's readiness for the 2012 season. Britt said earlier this week he hopes to be ready for Week 1, but this is clearly a setback.

Second Knee Procedure Possible For Titans WR Kenny Britt

The possibility still exists that Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt could need a second, but comparatively minor, knee procedure before he is fully ready to return to playing football this season. If Britt has to have the second operation, however, it should not be a major setback to his timetable to return from ACL and MCL surgery. Any sort of further work to the knee would likely be similar to the arthroscopic clean-up defensive end Derrick Morgan had last year in training camp. Titans coach Mike Munchak confirmed that while no second procedure for Britt is scheduled at this time, the possibility still is there for additional work simply due to the type of injury Britt suffered in his right knee, which underwent reconstructive surgery last October. Munchak said second procedures with that type of injury are fairly commonplace. “I think it always is (possible),” Munchak said. “I don't know if he will at some point, but I think that's something that's common with that injury. Derrick went through it last year. The good thing is that even if you do have it, it's not a huge setback. It's not something that sets you way back. But that is obviously part of the process, or could be, if that arises down the road.”

Titans Rookie WR Kendall Wright Says Baylor Had No Playbook

Kendall Wright got something he was unfamiliar with when he joined the Tennessee Titans rookie orientation for his first practices as a pro on Friday - a playbook. Wright told TitanInsider.com he never had a playbook in Baylor coach Art Briles' no-huddle spread offense, led by Heisman winner Robert Griffin III, but that signals were used to send plays during games. Wright said that sometimes new plays would be drawn up and then run on the practice field. "At Baylor we didn't huddle. Everything we did was coming off of signals and off the sideline,” Wright said. “We didn't huddle at Baylor and we didn't have a playbook. If we had a new play or something, we'd just draw it and go out there and run it.” Plays had names, but the signals from the sideline were the cue, not the code word name of the play. Overall, Wright estimates that he memorized about 300 plays by the time the variations to the plays were counted in. “I think I memorized over 300 plays at Baylor. … We had a lot of plays. We just didn't have a playbook. Coach Briles is a very smart man,” Wright said. “It was the same system. We were in that system for four years. It's kind of a different kind of learning deal. We'd see it visually and we'd just go run it. It just sticks with us when we keep running it a lot. We'd watch film and go over a lot of it in our meetings that we had. We'd have a lot of plays on the board, and have different signals. Whatever the signal was would tell us the play.”

Sensabaugh is the first member of the Titans' rookie draft class to agree to terms. Sensabaugh was one of the biggest risers at the NFL scouting combine, providing a significant boost to his draft stock.
Jake Locker Enters Titans QB Race Aiming To 'Earn Respect'

We just took a look at Ryan Tannehill down in Miami, a young quarterback who appears on the fast track to play sooner than later, not a surprise. In 2012, it's almost unheard of to draft a rookie passer in the first round, only to put him through the sit-and-watch treatment ala Aaron Rodgers. Jake Locker is the exception to that rule, spending his rookie year on the bench behind Matt Hasselbeck, the 36-year-old veteran who started all 16 games for the Tennessee Titans. One year later, Locker and Hasselbeck will go head-to-head for the starting job. Last summer, Locker found himself in an abyss, prevented from working with his coaches during the NFL lockout. The benefit of a full offseason has helped. "Just knowing a routine -- I know what to expect now, somewhat," Locker told the Tennessean this week. "I know what to expect out of camp. I know what to expect out of our first road game, our first preseason game. It is not all new to me now, and there is a sense of comfort in that." "... My goal is to earn the respect of the guys around me. Not to ask for it, but how you go out and work and how you prepare yourself, they can tell it means something to you."

Titans Rookie LB Zach Brown Looking To Disprove 'Soft' Label

After the Tennessee Titans selected University of North Carolina linebacker Zach Brown in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft last Friday night, NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock suggested that Brown was soft and averse to contact. Brown has heard those rumblings and is out to shed that label, reports Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean. "I use my finesse sometimes to get around the blocker to make a play,’" Brown said. "So for me, I want to prove everybody (I’m not soft). I am at Tennessee and I am going to try and make everybody else pay for passing me up, that is a chip on my shoulder." In 47 games at North Carolina, Brown recorded 230 tackles, including 19 for a loss and 5.5 sacks, with seven interceptions, three forced fumbles and four passes defensed. Brown is expected to push for the starting weak side linebacker job during training camp and the preseason.

A few days after drafting Zach Brown to compete for the weak side linebacker spot, the Tennessee Titans have added another Zac to provide some more competition there. Zac Diles, who split last season between Tampa Bay and Indianapolis, has signed with the Titans, according to TitanInsider.com. Diles also spent four years with the Houston Texans where he was coached by current Titans linebackers coach Frank Bush. In addition to Diles, Tennessee also signed rookie fullback Collin Mooney, who has spent the past three years fulfilling a military commitment after graduating from West Point in 2009.

Titans Select Rice DE Scott Solomon (Rd.7, No. 211)

With the 211th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Titans select Scott Solomon, DE (Rice). Productive, hardworking defensive lineman with a variety of skills. Plays with good balance and leverage and is tough to knock off his feet. Quick off the snap, immediately changes direction and displays the ability to make plays down the line of scrimmage in pursuit of the action. Effectively uses his hands, keeps his feet moving on contact and gets a lot of momentum going up the field. Chases the action hard and also effectively diagnoses plays.

With the 177th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Oklahoma St. select Markelle Martin, FS (Oklahoma State). Athletic defensive back prospect with an inconsistent game. Fast, displays an outstanding burst of recovery speed to make up for mistakes. Looks the part, quick up the field to defend the run and shows a tremendous burst out of his plant. Offers enough range to go sideline to sideline and make plays outside the numbers. Recognizes coverage assignments on the inside.
