Patriots To Make Run At Texans DE Mario Williams?

This could all be moot if the Texans try to wrap up their superstar defender but it would not stun Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly one bit if the Patriots make a play for DE Mario Williams. Bill Belichick is nothing if not opportunistic, and he knows that having one of the finest defensive talents potentially come free like this is a once-a-decade kind of thing he can't afford to pass up. Letting Richard Seymour go was a rare Belichick mistake, and sources have said that the coach admits he hasn't been able to adequately replace his former D-lineman. Reports have surfaced that the Texans seriously are torn and are starting to accept the idea that they might have to let Williams walk. Belichick can build a defense around Williams, and everyone who knows him knows he's a team-first winner, as well as a rare, game-changing talent.

Texans Increase Ticket Prices For 2012

The Houston Texans announced that, on average, ticket prices for the 2012 season will increase by 8.5 percent. Ticket prices for the Texans, who have 101 consecutive sellouts, had remained the same over the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The least expensive tickets -- Gridiron Terrace -- will remain at $30. Prices for seats at the "Gridiron" tier will increase by $3 to $5 per seat. The largest increases are for the "Field Level" seats, with the most expensive Prime 1 seats increasing from $120 to $130 while other "Field Level" seats will increase by $7 to $10 per seat. "Our fans have created one of the best home field advantages in the NFL, as anyone who saw the Wild Card game can attest," Texans Senior Vice President of Ticketing and Event Management John Schriever said "We want to continue to make our games accessible to a broad audience while still pricing in a manner that reflects the strong demand for our tickets. Fielding a championship caliber team and delivering a world class experience for our fans requires us to generate revenues that keep pace with our competition."

Texans Hope To Re-Sign C Chris Myers, OG Mike Brisiel

Now that the Texans' offensive line is beginning to receive the credit it's due, can the club keep it intact for next season? C Chris Myers and ORG Mike Brisiel are both unrestricted free agents whom Houston would like to re-sign, but neither is likely to receive a huge deal because the Texans' main focus is on locking up OLB Mario Williams and RB Arian Foster long term. Behind OLT Duane Brown, Myers was the best performer on the line last season. The Texans love Brisiel's toughness and mean streak; his quick recovery last season from a broken fibula is a testament to that. Perhaps working in the Texans' favor for bringing them back is the perception around the league that players can thrive in Houston's zone-blocking system; it requires smarts and athleticism rather than size and strength.

Sporting News Names Texans DC Wade Phillips 2011 Coordinator Of The Year

After Wade Phillips joined the Texans, their defense finally became legit, and for that, he is our 2011 coordinator of the year, he received 15 votes to 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s six and Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano’s four. Pagano was named head coach of the Colts this week. Defense, or lack of it, had been the main thing keeping Houston from becoming a playoff team. In 2010, the Texans gave up at least 30 points in half of their games, they allowed an average of 26.7 points per game, 29th in the NFL. They needed an emergency makeover. They hired Phillips, a former Cowboys head coach who found a nice landing spot farther south in Texas.

Franchise Tag Would Be Prohibitive For Texans LB Mario Williams

The Texans top priority will be to re-sign outside linebacker Mario Williams according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, they also want to sign running back Arian Foster, who’ll be a restricted free agent, to a long-term deal. The team’s top priority will be to re-sign outside linebacker Mario Williams. The Texans can’t afford to carry Williams at $22.9 million for one year, they can’t trade him because you can’t trade a player who’s not under contract. They could franchise him and hope he’d agree later to a long-term deal, but he’d be holding all the cards knowing they couldn’t keep him at $22.9 million. Williams wants to stay, but once he’s on the open market, a team with a lot of cap space and an owner willing to spend millions might offer agent Ben Dogra $40 million to $50 million for him, but before we count Williams as gone, remember that Smith, coach Gary Kubiak and owner Bob McNair have said they want to re-sign him, but they have only so much they can offer.

There was no mention of the injury following Foster's performance against Baltimore in the divisional round of the playoffs when he ran for 132 yards and a touchdown and also caught five passes for 22 yards. The report says the Texans also would like to sign Foster to a long-term deal. If they are unable to, they will tender him at the maximum and would match any offer he receives from another team.

Jacoby Jones has become Public Enemy No. 1 to many Texans fans. Jones’ terrible decision and fumble on a punt return set up an easy touchdown as the Ravens took a 7-3 lead en route to a 20-13 victory that ended the Texans’ historic season on Sunday in the AFC divisional round in Baltimore. Jones is sorry for the mistake and he has apologized over and over and over. “It’s something you got to live and learn with,” he said on Monday as the Texans cleaned out their lockers. “It’s a decision I made and I got to grow from it. I’ll get over it. I made a mistake. I apologized to my teammates. “The coaches thought I had my most consistent season,” he continued. “(Being close), that’s the thing that hurts, makes it a little harder.”

Ravens Hang On To Defeat Texans 20-13, Advance To AFC Championship Game

The Baltimore Ravens jumped out to a 17-3 first quarter lead and were able to hold off the Houston Texans for the final 45 minutes for a 20-13 win to advance to next week's 2011 AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots. Baltimore took advantage of a pair of Texans turnovers in the first quarter, turning a muffed punt by Jacoby Jones and a Lardarius Webb interception of rookie quarterback T.J. Yates into a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-point lead over the AFC South champions. The Texans cut the lead to four points at the half, but the offense sputtered in the second half. Houston's final possession of the game ended with safety Ed Reed breaking up a Hail Mary pass with 11 seconds remaining.

Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will coach from the field during Sunday's divisional playoff tilt against the Baltimore Ravens for the first time since his surgery, Texans sources said. Phillips underwent surgery on his kidney and gallbladder in December and missed two games before returning to coach from the press box in the Texans' season-finale loss to the Tennessee Titans. When told that Phillips would coach Sunday's game on the sideline, Texans linebacker Brian Cushing said Phillips' presence would be "really cool" for him and his defensive teammates.

WR Derrick Mason, 37, announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday after 15 seasons and 943 receptions. During the 2011 season, the veteran was cut by the Baltimore Ravens, traded by the New York Jets and released by the Houston Texans. "I'm done," Mason told Scout.com. "I won't be playing football. I leave it healthy and able to run and walk and not take a half-hour or 45 minutes to get out of bed. Me leaving now, even though it didn't happen the way I wanted it to happen, I had a good run."

Coach Gary Kubiak said today that defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Houston on Friday will not be a distraction to the team the day before the Texans leave for Baltimore to play a divisional round game against the Ravens on Sunday. “I look on it as a compliment,” Kubiak said. “It’s not affecting anything we do. The game plan will be in. We’ll be through with practice, and they’ll interview him Friday night.” Phillips is one of numerous candidates for the Tampa Bay job that became available when Raheem Morris was fired after three seasons.
