Ben Roethlisberger's transition to new offensive coordinator Todd Haley's playbook is not going as smoothly as Steelers fans had hoped. Roethlisberger said Thursday that so far it's been "frustrating at times" but that he's going to put in "extra work" to understand what Haley wants him to do. "I think coach (Haley) really wants to challenge us," Big Ben said on a radio interview, per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Me, maybe, in particular, I think he felt like I was real comfortable with the old offense, which ... I don't know why that's a bad thing. But I'm not the head coach."

"It is really a win-win, whether he wins the case or if he loses it," Harrison said. "If he loses it, it shows that Goodell does have too much power and if he wins it, it opens up the floodgates." Harrison has long been an outspoken critic of the NFL's commissioner and has been fined more than $100,000 in his career for hits the league has deemed illegal.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall says he will play in 2012, perhaps even in week one. That's a bold statement from Mendenhall, who tore his ACL on Jan. 1. "They never said a time. With a knee, it can take anywhere from six to 12 months, so everybody's time frame is different," Mendenhall said on the Steelers website. "I'll be back at some point. It's just a matter of what point that is." The Steelers didn't do very much to address the position in the off-season. Holdovers Isaac Redmon and Jonathan Dwyer and rookie fifth-round pick Chris Rainey are Pittsburgh's other options as the position currently.

After nine outrageously successful seasons in the NFL, Troy Polamalu has earned the right to manage the offseason any way he chooses. This time around, the All-Pro safety is breaking from his normal program to join the Pittsburgh Steelers for organized team activities. Polamalu, who regularly skipped OTA sessions in past years to work with his Los Angeles-based trainer, was on the field Tuesday for drills. With a handful of veteran defenders no longer on the roster -- linebacker James Farrior, defensive end Aaron Smith and cornerback William Gay are among the departed -- Polamalu acknowledged the urge to serve as a presence for younger players to turn to, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It's my time to be around the team a little more," Polamalu said.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger Says 'No Trouble' With Coach Todd Haley

When the Pittsburgh Steelers gather for Tuesday's organized team activities, they'll be asked to tread new ground. After five seasons running Bruce Arians' offense, Ben Roethlisberger and Co. will begin to install a new attack under coordinator Todd Haley; a look the quarterback described as "a 90 percent change" from the scheme run for so long in the Steel City. An awkward offseason transition from Arians (now the Indianapolis Colts' coordinator) to Haley generated press in Pittsburgh. Roethlisberger and Arians were close, everyone knew that, after Haley and Big Ben endured a chilly start, there were whispers the quarterback was unhappy, but Roethlisberger confirmed the two men are on good footing. "People blew it way out of proportion," Roethlisberger told KDKA-TV on Monday. "It's something new, we're getting to know each other ... There's no trouble between us at all." Under Arians, the Steelers increasingly defied their grind-it-out image in favor of a passing game that burned defenses with sets that heavily featured their talented young wideouts, Haley's attack doesn't promise a four-quarter air show, but Roethlisberger is ready to buy in to the plan. "When you get a comfort level of like eight years of the same thing and then you change it, it's just something different, so I'm not saying I don't like the playbook or anything like that," Roethlisberger said. "Some of the stuff is really -- some of the concepts are awesome, it's just getting an understanding of something new."

Rookies David DeCastro (Stanford) and Mike Adams (Ohio State) are not allowed to report to the team until their respective schools' semester ends. The biggest absence reportedly will be disgruntled WR Mike Wallace, who is unhappy about the lack of a contract extension and still has not signed the one-year, $2.742 million restricted free-agent tender the team gave him prior to the start of free agency. He is not required to sign his tender or attend OTAs but is required to attend minicamp. With negotiations between the sides at a standstill, it remains to be seen if Wallace holds out from minicamp as well.

OT Max Starks Still Waiting To Hear From Steelers

The Steelers have revamped their offensive line via the draft. They recently moved Willie Colon to left guard, but at this time Max Starks seems to be the odd man out. The veteran free agent has yet to be contacted by the Steelers according to Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I have not had contact with management or anybody like that,” Starks said Friday while on his way to rehab his surgically repaired knee in Phoenix. “I guess eventually I will hear something from them … or maybe not.” The Steelers plan to have Adams, Jonathan Scott and Trai Essex battle for the starting left tackle spot during camp. “As for myself, I don’t see (me being a part of that battle) unless there is something I don’t know,” Starks said. Starks likely won’t be ready for the start of training camp anyway, it’s been about four months since Dr. James Bradley repaired the ACL Starks tore in his right knee during the wild-card playoff loss to Denver. “I am pretty good, actually,” Starks said. “I am starting lateral work movement with my ACL, and everything is moving along nicely “It would be pushing it to be in training camp,” Starks said. “It is not unfeasible. Athletes push it to be ready in six months, but my mindset is to be ready to play by Week 1. That’s a realistic goal for me.”

San Francisco linebacker Aldon Smith told the Sacramento Bee that the 49ers weren't targeting Ben Roethlisberger's injured ankle in a Dec. 19 game. "Our goal was to win the game," said Smith, who had 2.5 sacks that game. "We don't go out and talk about hurting other players, their ankles, or injuries or any of that. We were going out to win the game. The quarterback, he controls the game. So if he got hit, it happens." While no one expected any of the 49ers to admit they went after Roethlisberger's ankle, Smith's defense is supported by the research done by my NFC West colleague Mike Sando, who found no evidence of it when he reviewed every Steelers offensive play from that game. Roethlisberger never accused the 49ers of putting a bounty on him, but the Steelers quarterback did suggest this month that San Francisco was targeting his injured ankle. When asked about the last time he felt a team was going after his knees, ankles or head, Roethlisberger said on "The Dan Patrick Show" on May 10: "Um, wow, that's tough. I don't really complain about that stuff, either. But I think when we played San Fran, I felt like there were some things going on, some extra ... " The Sacramento Bee pointed out that the 49ers' defense was penalized three times in that game, and none involved a hit on Roethlisberger.

Steelers WR Mike Wallace Will Wait To Sign Tender

Restricted free agent Mike Wallace really isn't a free agent anymore. Per the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, Wallace's chance to sign elsewhere expired in April, meaning that his only two options are to sign his one-year, $2.7 million tender with the Steelers, or hold out. According to ESPN, Wallace will wait to sign his tender until the last possible minute, which will likely be June 15. Per the CBA, the Steelers can drop the guaranteed value of the one-year tender to under $600,000 after June 15, which means Wallace would lose over $2 million by not signing. Wallace is unlikely to participate in offseason workouts with the team but would be a part of training camp if he signs by the June 15 deadline. The Steelers have said they'd like to sign him to a long-term deal.

Steelers Willie Colon Will Move From Tackle To Guard

The Pittsburgh Steelers have used this offseason to aggressively patch up an offensive line that stood out as perhaps the team's greatest weakness in 2011. First-round pick David DeCastro is an immediate starter at right guard. The team's second-round pick Mike Adams is penciled in at tackle, along with their second-round pick of 2011, Marcus Gilbert. That means changes for veteran Willie Colon, who confirmed Wednesday he'll shift from right tackle to the inside. "I've made the transition to left guard. I like it. It's just a matter of learning the verbiage," Colon told Mike Prisuta of WDVE-FM in Pittsburgh. Colon is embracing the switch and his size (6-foot-3, 315 pounds) makes him a fit. His one request was ample time to prepare: "My only issue would have been 'Don't move me midway through camp,' " Colon said, before telling Steelers fans to expect frequent pulling in Pittsburgh's man-power blocking scheme.

I like it.
Bills Sign Former Texans WR/TE Dorin Dickerson

The Buffalo Bills have signed former Houston Texan receiver/tight end Dorin Dickerson. Dickerson is a former seventh-round pick of the Texans (2010) and appeared in seven games as a rookie mainly on special teams. Released by Houston last September during final cuts, he had short stints on the Pittsburgh and New England practice squads. The Bills see him as an off the line tight end/H-back prospect, which is where he saw most of his work during the club’s three-day rookie minicamp.

Ben Roethlisberger Says 49ers Were Overly Aggressive With His Injured Ankle

Ben Roethlisberger said he suspected the San Francisco 49ers targeted his sprained left ankle in a regular-season game last year, but the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback did not think the team participated in any foul play. Asked about the last time he felt an opposing team was trying to cause or exacerbate a specific injury, Roethlisberger brought up last season's 20-3 loss to the 49ers in Week 16. Roethlisberger threw three interceptions and fumbled twice in the game while playing with a high ankle sprain. "Um, wow, that's tough," Roethlisberger said on The Dan Patrick Show, via Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "I don't really complain about that stuff, either. But I think when we played San Fran, I felt like there were some things going on, some extra ... Now, obviously, I did have the ankle and I was playing, so there was kind of a bulls-eye on there anyway. But for the most part, guys play tough and you go into a game expecting it. I expect to be tougher than them."

The Pittsburgh Steelers said they wanted to run the ball more often when they parted with offensive coordinator Bruce Arians this offseason, but Ben Roethlisberger hasn't noticed too much of a change under Todd Haley, the Pro Bowl quarterback told NFL Network's Rich Eisen. "In these meetings I've had with Coach Haley, he's all about the no-huddle and using our wide-receiver weapons and throwing the ball and stuff like that," Roethlisberger said. The quarterback made headlines this offseason after he said he was upset the team didn't renew Arians' contract. Arians now is the offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts. "People made such a big deal about us being so upset and hissy fits," Roethlisberger said. "Nothing like that happened. You hate to see anybody that's your family leave. So that was the tough part."

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed their fourth draft pick on Tuesday as second round tackle Mike Adams has come to terms according to Ed Bouchette on Twitter. Adams joins Alameda Ta'amu, Chris Rainey and Toney Clemons as draft picks signed thus far. There was speculation that Adams would have part or all of his signing bonus deferred as part of the stipulations agreed to prior to the draft for Adams to get back on the Steelers draft board, but Bouchette states that was never a consideration. The financial details of the four year deal for Adams have not been released, but it is expected to total out at around $3.6 million or so and include a signing bonus over $1 million. Adams tested positive at the NFL combine for marijuana and it is believed that several teams had removed him from their draft boards as a result of it.
