Seahawks VP Of Football Operations Will Lewis Leaving Team

Longtime Seattle Seahawks front office executive Will Lewis is leaving the team, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. No reason was given for Lewis' departure, which comes less than two weeks before the start of the 2012 Scouting Combine and a little more than a month away from the start of free agency. Lewis, who turned 54 last month, has been with the Seahawks since 1999, following Mike Holmgren to the Pacific Northwest after spending three seasons in the Green Bay Packers' scouting department. Lewis was the team's Director of Pro Personnel until 2009, surviving the addition of General Manager Tim Ruskell. Lewis was promoted to Vice President of Football Operations in 2010 after the Seahawks hired John Schneider has a permanent replacement for Ruskell.

Seahawks Interested In Hosting Future Super Bowl

The Seattle Seahawks have submitted paperwork to the National Football League regarding hosting a future Super Bowl at CenturyLink Field, Aaron Levine of Q13 FOX News in Seattle reports. According to Levine, CenturyLink Field has the capacity to meet the 70,000-seat requirement -- the announced attendance at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday was under 69,000 -- the area (Seattle, Bellevue, Everett, Tacoma) meets the 25,000 hotel room capacity and there's no shortage of exhibit space in the city. The one major hurdle, the 50-degree average temperature requirement, could be waived as was the case in the awarding of Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey in February of 2014. Super Bowl XLIX will be held in Glendale, Arizona and the NFL is looking at Los Angeles or London as potential hosts sites for the fiftieth Super Bowl (Super Bowl L) in 2016.

In his first year with the Seahawks, free-agent addition Robert Gallery had a real roller-coaster season. But after struggling the first half of the season with a groin injury, we hear the team was quite pleased with the former Raider first-round draft pick's play at left guard down the stretch. "He was one of a lot of veteran guys who wasn't in the best of shape because of not having a full conditioning program. They're looking forward to him hopefully being a lot healthier next year."

After suffering a pair of concussions in a short period of time, the Seattle Seahawks placed wide receiver Sidney Rice on injured reserve on November 30. Rice had been playing throwing foot and knee injuries, as well as a torn labrum in his right shoulder that delayed his debut with his new team and would require surgery in the offseason. According to Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com, Rice had surgery on both of his shoulders, not just the one with the torn labrum. Signed a five-year, $41 million contract with the Seahawks in July, Rice's contract included $18.5 million in guaranteed money. That guarantee consists of a $6 million signing bonus, fully guaranteed base salaries of $2 million in 2011 and $7 million in 2012 and a $3.5 million injury-only guarantee on his $8.5 million base salary in 2013.

Robinson replaces Green Bay Packers fullback John Kuhn, who suffered a knee injury during Sunday's 37-20 loss to the New York Giants. In his second season with the Seahawks, Robinson had four carries for seven yards and caught nine passes for 74 yards and a touchdown, but made the Pro Bowl on the strength of his blocking.
Seahawks To Lock Up DE Red Bryant Before Free Agency Begins?

The Seahawks might want to lock up massive defensive end Red Bryant before he becomes a free agent, because there is likely to be quite a bit of interest in him if he is on the open market. When the Seahawks drafted Bryant, they were playing a 4-3 defense and he played tackle. But the team knew he was a better fit as a 3-4 end. They just thought he was such a value in the fourth round of the draft that they shouldn’t take him. Now that the Seahawks are playing a 3-4, Bryant is in his element. He had an outstanding season and still could be improving.

The feeling in Seattle is that free-agent FB Michael Robinson, whose value is enhanced by his special-teams play, is a much better bet to be re-signed than free-agent RB Justin Forsett, whose time as the team's starting back before Marshawn Lynch arrived on the scene seems like a distant memory. This season, Leon Washington threatened Forsett's stature as Lynch's backup, and Pro Football Weekly is told it would not be a shock if recently signed ex-Panther Tyrell Sutton supplanted Forsett as the Seahawks' third-down back.

Pete Carroll Endorses Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson As Their Starter Next Year

Tarvaris Jackson will end this season Sunday in Arizona the same way he began it: as Seattle's undisputed starting quarterback. Jackson outlasted the chants for backup Charlie Whitehurst early in the season. He came back from a strained pectoral muscle. He survived Seattle's 2-6 start, more than 40 sacks at the hands of opponents, and he has started more games this season than any of his previous five. And after all that, coach Pete Carroll says he's comfortable with Jackson as Seattle's starter going forward. "That's where we are," Carroll said. "That doesn't mean that we're not going to look at the draft really hard and all of the opportunities. We'll always do that at every position. But (for) T-Jack, understanding what this season has been like for him is really important."

Seahawks WR Sidney Rice Will Need 3-4 Months To Rehab From Surgery

Sidney Rice’s first season with the Seattle Seahawks didn’t go as anyone planned. The free-agent prize made just 32 receptions for 484 yards and two touchdowns, hardly the kind of production the club expected when they paid him No. 1-receiver money, injuries contributed to his problems, and they’ll be an issue for him this offseason. Rice, who was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 30 after suffering two concussions in a span of three weeks, will now be on the shelf following shoulder surgery. Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times reports Rice has had surgery to repair an problem that kept him out of the first two games of the season. "Some time ago, we knew he was going to have surgery," Carroll said. "We just put it off to this date. I don't know exactly why it was put it off to this date, but there has been a few weeks we could have put it off earlier." Rice will need three to four months to rehabilitate from the surgery, meaning he potentially will miss the beginning of the club’s offseason program.

Rice was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 30 after suffering two concussions in the span of three games. At the time he went on injured reserve, there was no indication he would be undergoing surgery. Coach Pete Carroll said Rice didn't suffer a setback per se, but there was a decision made to undergo surgery. "Some time ago, we knew he was going to have surgery," Carroll said.
With the regular season almost over, members of two NFL coaching staffs are reportedly set to move back to college. San Diego Chargers linebackers coach John Pagano and Seattle Seahawks special teams assistant Jeff Ulbrich are expected to join UCLA coach Jim Mora’s new staff, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times. "We're in pretty good shape,” Mora said of his search for assistant coaches. “We got a couple guys we'll probably announce right after the new year." Pagano, the Chargers’ longest-tenured assistant, is expected to be hired as the Bruins’ defensive coordinator. Ulbrich, a former San Francisco 49ers linebacker, would become UCLA’s special teams coach.
