No-Shows Dominate Ravens OTAs

The absentees overshadowed the attendees at the Baltimore Ravens' OTA session Wednesday. No Ray Rice, who's seeking a big pay day and has yet to sign his franchise tag tender. No Terrell Suggs, who is still recovering from a partially torn Achilles' tendon suffered during offseason training. And no Ray Lewis, who is at the stage of his career where a voluntary camp is an automatic no-show. "We'd love to have all the guys here, but it's not realistic in today's business environment," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said. "We're moving forward. Ray (Rice) is working hard. I'm not worried about Ray. Ray Rice is working hard. Both Rays are working hard." Harbaugh oversaw a loose and passionate workout throughout the hazy and humid afternoon.

Ravens LB Sergio Kindle Hoping For A Chance To Play In 2012

After recovering from a fractured skull two summers ago, Ravens outside linebacker Sergio Kindle is hoping to earn some playing time in 2012. Kindle is still coping with hearing loss in his left ear following a fall down a flight of stairs in 2010. This has made it tough for him to hear calls, and he's yet to deal with crowd noise. Kindle conceded 2012 could be a "make or break year."

The Baltimore Ravens need Ray Rice more than ever heading into the 2012 season, but will they be able to get on the same page with their star running back before the conversation turns nasty? According to NFL Network's Kimberly Jones, there's hope among those in the Ravens organization that a long-term deal with the running back can be hammered out, though it might not happen until July. Jones reported that when she inquired if Ravens coach John Harbaugh had anything to report about the negotiations, she received a simple response. "No I don't," Harbaugh said. She said he smiled and added, "Does that surprise you?" Rice led the NFL in yards from scrimmage last season and is currently scheduled to earn $7.742 million in base salary under the franchise tag. He is not taking part in organized team activities, which started on Tuesday, the Baltimore Sun reported on Monday that the two sides have been "talking regularly" and that progress has been made.

Ravens Coach John Harbaugh Believes FS Ed Reed Will Play This Year

Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh believes Ed Reed will play despite recent comments that suggest the Pro Bowl safety is wavering. "Ed is a guy that I really trust and I really care about and believe in," Harbaugh said after Wednesday's workout. "There's been no indication that he's not going to play as far as I'm concerned. I don't worry about Ed. He's a mature guy. He's a superstar. He's a first ballot Hall of Famer. He's a leader. We're counting on Ed being here." Reed was among a handful of veterans who didn't attend Wednesday's voluntary practice. He created a stir last week when he told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he was "not 100 percent committed right now to playing this year." Reed later clarified his comments, saying he plans on playing in 2012 and possibly beyond. In trying to interpret Reed's comments, Harbaugh said he believes Reed was talking about not being committed to the offseason workouts. "He's got a lot of things going on and he's working on personal things," Harbaugh said. "I guarantee he's training. I guarantee he's preparing for the season. That's just Ed."

Ray Rice has stayed away from the Ravens facility this offseason and will undoubtedly not attend OTA's . Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports while no deal is imminent and there remains plenty of work to do, there has been some progress in the contract talks in recent weeks between Rice’s agent, Todd France, and the Ravens, according to sources familiar with the talks. The Ravens have until the afternoon of July 16 to sign Rice to an extension or the two-time, Pro-Bowl running back will play the season under the $7.7 million franchise tag. The hope remains that the two sides will come to an agreement with time to spare, perhaps even before the mandatory veteran minicamp from June 12-14, or if not, shortly thereafter.

Ravens Aren't Considering Non-Football Injury List For DE/LB Terrell Suggs

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports that there’s been “no indication” that the Ravens are considering placing DE/OLB Terrell Suggs on the non-football injury list. Suggs is obviously dealing with a very serious injury after partially tearing his Achilles a few weeks ago. There’s been some talk in recent weeks that the Ravens could choose to not pay him his salary, since the injury occurred during an unsupervised workout away from the team. The fact remains that Suggs will end up missing a good portion of the 2012 season.

Ravens Rookie FB Chad Diehl Cites Concussions In Passing On NFL

Chad Diehl's NFL career is over before it started after the undrafted fullback announced his retirement following a concussion sustained during a rookie minicamp last weekend. Diehl, 6-2, 260 pounds, was a blocking fullback at Clemson before signing as a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens after the draft. He was probably a longshot to make the Ravens so he says he decided to step away from football after another head injury, according to the Spartansburg (S.C.) Herald-Journal. From Diehl's Facebook page:"At rookie mini-camp this past weekend I suffered another concussion. With this concussion happening so soon after the concussion I had in January at the Senior Bowl it left many people concerned including family, doctors, and myself about my health and future if I were to continue playing. With that being said, after having an MRI done, along with multiple tests and a history of quite a few collisions as a fullback, the doctor and I came into agreement that it would be in my best interest for my football career to go ahead and come to an end. I know that God has a plan for everything and I love my wife and daughter way too much to risk my future with them. To all of my friends, family, and fans, I love (you) too and want to say thank (you) for all of your support over my years of playing football. God bless." Diehl is the second undrafted free agent this spring to cite concussions as a reason to quit football, following Cleveland Browns linebacker Andrew Sweat, who chose to attend law school instead.

The future Hall of Famer told Adam Schein and Rich Gannon of Sirius XM NFL Radio on Thursday that he is not "100 percent committed" to playing football in 2012. This would be more surprising if Reed didn't broach the subject so often, he admitted that he's considered retiring the last three years, and has said so publicly more than once. Money is also an issue,Reed publicly pushed for a new contract as recently as late April on Baltimore radio, saying it was an issue of "respect." Reed is set to earn $7.2 million this year. Reed was asked if the Ravens know he isn't fully on board. "I'm sure they will after this interview," Reed said.

They also named Joe Douglas as national scout, hired David Blackburn as an area scout, assigned Mark Azevedo to Southeast area scout and hired Kenny Sanders as a player personnel assistant. DeCosta, 41, has been director of player personnel for three years after previous stint as a director of college scouting. “When we extended Eric’s contract earlier this year, we changed his title,” general manager Ozzie Newsome said. “As Eric continues to grow in the personnel department, he is becoming a vital part of the decision-making process.”

Ravens LB Terrell Suggs, Eagles OT Jason Peters Could Lose Salary For Injuries

more bad news for Eagles left tackle Jason Peters and Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, not only did both players tear their Achilles' tendons, they could lose money for it. ESPN reports that both players are facing a financial reduction of some sort because of how they were injured. It is up to the discretion of the Ravens and Eagles whether they want to withhold pay from Suggs or Peters because they suffered a "non-football injury." Even though the players were training for football, they were not at the team facility or working under the team's discretion. Both players are subject to being played on the non-football injury (NFI) list.

Ravens second-round rookie linebacker Courtney Upshaw was a hot topic of conversation at the team's minicamp this weekend. When stud pass-rusher Terrell Suggs went down with a torn Achilles, putting his 2012 in jeopardy, the spotlight shined brighter on the newest outside linebacker. "The coaches told me to come out here this mini-camp and learn the defense, come out here and compete," Upshaw said. "Honestly, speaking on Suggs, there's only one Suggs. You can't replace Suggs. Everybody's got to come in as a team. The veteran leadership on this team is not going to allow slacking on my part or anybody else's. Everybody's gotta step up."

RB Ray Rice Promises Super Bowl Glory For Ravens

It's Ray Rice Day in Baltimore, and the Ravens star running back used the special occasion to make a promise to the city: Ray Rice told the fans here that this fall he'll do his job and bring a Super Bowl back to Baltimore. Rice was at Calvert Hall in Towson, Md., on Saturday, to kick of the event that included games, autographs and a luncheon geared for 600 young fans of the popular running back. "I'm so blessed to be in a position where I can give back to the kids," Rice said on his official website. "It means the world to me to be able to bring Ray Rice Day to Baltimore and spend a day with the kids giving instruction, encouragement, and inspiration. My hope is that they come away from the day knowing that they can be anything they want to in life." The children are wise to listen, off the field, Rice has shown a particular interest in lifting up the city he plays for, on it, Rice remains one of the game's premier backs and the central cog in Baltimore's attack. He told reporters he feels better than ever heading into his fifth season, narrow defeat to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game still eats at this franchise, and Rice's words to the masses prove as much -- even here on a Saturday in May.

After undergoing surgery for a sports hernia in late January, Baltimore wide receiver Torrey Smith is still addressing questions about his readiness to get back on the field. Smith told Scout.com on Saturday that he's 100 percent recovered and working without restrictions. The Ravens begin organized team activities May 22. Smith made a similar declaration about his recovery in April before the team's offseason conditioning program, in which he later participated. Smith told Pro Football Talk Live in April that the injury was an issue he dealt with from about Week 3 on. "There were multiple [tissue] tears," Smith said. "It was one of those injuries where you could play with it or get it fixed. But it wasn’t one of those injuries where I wasn’t able to run, period, so I kept playing with it."

Derrick Mason Wants To Retire As A Baltimore Raven

For six seasons, Derrick Mason left cornerbacks slipping on the turf with his signature comeback routes — cuts that were sharp, surgical, and effective. Now, as he sprints into life after football, Mason may soon swerve back to Baltimore to retire as a member of the Ravens. Mason, the franchise’s all-time leader in career receptions and receiving yards, told The Baltimore Sun on Friday he hopes to retire as a Raven. The 38-year-old has spoken with team officials about his desire, and it will likely happen once he officially retires. “I would love to retire as a Raven,” he said. “Tennessee gave me an opportunity — and I will always be grateful for that — to actually live out one of my dreams and play this game and play at a high level. But once I got to Baltimore, that’s when I really started to grow as a player, that’s when I really started to understand what this game was about, why I was I was playing it. That’s why I want to retire as a Raven, because I had some great, great memories there and I met a lot of great people. That’s my football family.”
