Will Rams WR Brandon Lloyd End Up With Patriots?

Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd told the Post-Dispatch at the end of the season that a big factor in where he play next season is where Josh McDaniels ended up per Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Lloyd's career took off after he joined McDaniels in Denver in 2009, and the pair reunited in St. Louis following the trade, but after one ill-fated season as Rams offensive coordinator, McDaniels now has the coordinator's title in New England. The Patriots could be a desirable landing spot for Lloyd for a couple of reasons, for one, the Patriots win and win at a high level and for another, the Patriots need help at wide receiver. Other than Wes Welker and Deion Branch, New England didn't have a wideout catch more than 15 passes, Welker, who led the league with 122 receptions, also is scheduled for unrestricted free agency, although it's hard to see the Patriots letting him walk. Under the old regime at Rams Park, the Rams were interested in re-signing Lloyd, but it's unclear at this point what the new regime thinks of him and there's also a different face on the other side of the negotiating table, because Lloyd recently signed with a new agent, St. Louis-based Tom Condon of CAA.

Patriots To Make Run At Texans DE Mario Williams?

This could all be moot if the Texans try to wrap up their superstar defender but it would not stun Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly one bit if the Patriots make a play for DE Mario Williams. Bill Belichick is nothing if not opportunistic, and he knows that having one of the finest defensive talents potentially come free like this is a once-a-decade kind of thing he can't afford to pass up. Letting Richard Seymour go was a rare Belichick mistake, and sources have said that the coach admits he hasn't been able to adequately replace his former D-lineman. Reports have surfaced that the Texans seriously are torn and are starting to accept the idea that they might have to let Williams walk. Belichick can build a defense around Williams, and everyone who knows him knows he's a team-first winner, as well as a rare, game-changing talent.

Patriots RB Kevin Faulk Contemplating Retirement

On Friday, long time Patriots running back Kevin Faulk sat down with NESN to talk about his 13-year NFL career and the Patriots' 21-17 loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. A lot of people thought the Super Bowl would be Faulk's last game, turns out he didn't even play. "That morning, when I got the word that I wasn't going to dress, wow," said Faulk. "I went in the room, cried a little bit, because 75 percent of me knew that this could be my last game playing, not playing, just dressing. If I dress there could possibly be that chance that I could play. So that really crushed me a whole lot." There has been a lot of buzz around whether or not Faulk will call it a career at 13 very productive seasons in the Patriots' backfield. He's totaled 31 career touchdowns with over 7,000 yards from scrimmage as the team's third down back. After an emotional Super Bowl, he doesn't plan on making a retirement decision any time soon until he gets his thoughts together. "(I took) my exit physical after the game and the trainers give me a big hug and that's when I knew, like 'Wow, that might be it.' If they know, you definitely know. Going through that evening after the game and worrying about the loss and being like, wow, guys have another opportunity to come back next year and do it again. Mine is very slim, and it's not by my choice this time," said Faulk. "Right now and with the emotions that are going on and with the game that just happened last week, I know everyone was speculating that I was going to make a decision, probably today or what not; it's kind of early. I don't want to tie my emotions into exactly what went on Sunday that passed, what went on the course of the season, I just think it's something that I have to sit down and talk with my family and my agent, teammates, former teammates that I've talked to, people that I really trust, for me to base my decision off of."

Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski Had “Multiple Torn Ligaments”

A team source told the Boston Globe that New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, who had arthroscopic surgery Friday on his injured left ankle, suffered multiple torn ligaments. Gronkowski was able to play in Super Bowl XLVI, but was limited by the high left ankle sprain he suffered during the AFC Championship Game. The normally explosive Gronkowski, who set NFL single-season records for touchdowns (17) and receiving yards (1,327) by a tight end, finished with two receptions for 26 yards. He is expected to recover in 10 weeks, according to the Sports Business Journal, which would get him back on the field in time for organized team activities in the spring.

Bill Belichick Wanted Giants To Throw To Mario Manningham On Final Drive

The Patriots got exactly what they wanted when the Giants threw to Mario Manningham on New York's last Super Bowl drive. Then the receiver New England deemed less dangerous than Victor Cruz or Hakeem Nicks made a catch that will be replayed over and over for years to come. "This is still a Cruz and Nicks game," Patriots coach Bill Belichick tells his defenders in audio captured for "Sound FX," which first aired Wednesday night on NFL Network. "I know we're right on them; it's tight. But those are still the guys. Make them go to Manningham; make them go to (tight end Bear) Pascoe. Let's make sure we get Cruz and Nicks." Manningham's 38-yard reception—over-the-shoulder, between two defenders and along the sideline—was the key play on the Giants' winning drive. New England challenged the catch, but as the video review is going on, a dejected Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is heard muttering, "He caught it."

Patriots President Jason Kraft Defends TE Rob Gronkowski

The sight of Rob Gronkowski shaking off an ankle injury and a Super Bowl loss to dance the night away has drawn the expected amount of criticism, and probably more. But he's not hearing it from the people who matter most: His bosses. Patriots president Jonathan Kraft told ESPN Boston Radio on Friday he has yet to see the video, but he doesn't question Gronkowski's actions because of his passion for the game. “One thing I do know is the guy absolutely is 100 percent a passionate, passionate competitor when it comes to football,” Kraft said. “He loves football. He wants to win. He wants to get better. He doesn’t like losing. I don’t, I guess, know specifically that people are questioning that, but he’s an ultimate competitor and we’re excited he’s on our football team. I think the team did accomplish a lot this year, and unfortunately we fell a little bit short of the ultimate goal. I do think that he and the other players probably have different ways of both celebrating what we were able to achieve and dealing with the disappointment of that night, and I think it’s hard to personalize how any individual would deal with that, and then project it on someone else. I’d probably leave it at that."

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle this morning, Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal reports. Gronkowski injured his ankle while being tackled by Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard in the AFC Championship Game. The second-year tight end returned to the game with his left ankle taped heavily and was able to play in Super Bowl XLVI, though surgery after the season has always been the likely scenario. According to Mullen, the recovery time is expected to take 10 weeks, which means Gronkowski will be ready to go well before training camp.

Ahmad Bradshaw scored on a six-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds remaining to lift the Giants to a 21-17 win. Manning led the 88-yard drive to win the game, just like he orchestrated an 83-yard drive to win the 2008 Super Bowl over the Patriots, which ended New England's hopes of a perfect season. With time running down, Bradshaw nearly sat at the half-yard line before falling back into the end zone for the touchdown. Tom Brady completed a 19-yard pass to Deion Branch on 4th-and-16, but a last- second Hail Mary pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

The report adds that things could turn ugly between Welker and the team including a holdout potentially going as long as possible.
The Patriots got a scare in Super Bowl XLVI when Tom Brady was driven into the turf by Giants defensive end Justin Tuck midway through the third quarter. Brady’s left shoulder hit against Lucas Oil Field's artificial surface, raising concerns that the shoulder had been reinjured. He missed practice time before the AFC title game against the Ravens because of soreness. The hit, in fact, aggravated a sprain that Brady had suffered earlier in the season, SN correspondent Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports. The aggravation did not lead to a major injury, though, and it is not believed that Brady will need to deal with it much in the offseason, according to the Herald.

Ex-Patriot Rodney Harrison Calls Out TE Rob Gronkowski

Former Patriot safety Rodney Harrison had some tough words for tight end Rob Gronkowski Wednesday, telling ESPNChicago Radio 1000 that Gronkowski "disrespected himself" by dancing and taking off his shirt at the team's postgame party following the Super Bowl XLVI loss to the Giants. "I guarantee you this, if Willie McGinest, Tedy Bruschi, Larry Izzo, Richard Seymour or myself had been at that party, (Gronkowski) probably would have got his head rung," said Harrison, who admitted he has not seen the video or photos of Gronkowski dancing at the party. "There's no reason for that to happen." "When we lost the Super Bowl, any of my Super Bowl losses, I was so devastated the last thing I ever wanted to do was party, let alone dance or take off your shirt," he added. "It's just immaturity. It's not right. He made a mistake and I'm sure he feels absolutely stupid about it at this point. There's a time and place for everything." When told that veteran Patriots offensive lineman Matt Light was also photographed with his shirt off, Harrison said he was "surprised." To Harrison, it's the veteran leadership on the team that should have ensured something like that didn't happen. "The leadership has to step up and someone has to pull (Gronkowski) to the side and say 'Look young man, this is inappropriate, this is not the time nor the place. You need to grow up,'" Harrison said. "And that's what it comes down to. I like this kid. I think he's a good kid, works hard, is unselfish. But he made a mistake ..."There's a certain way of representing yourself and your family and that's not the right way."

Patriots Likely To Tender QB Brian Hoyer

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that the Patriots are likely to tender restricted free agent QB Brian Hoyer at least at the 2nd round level in March. The Patriots are stacked at the quarterback position with future Hall-of-Famer Tom Brady and 2010 3rd-round pick Ryan Mallett but Bill Belichek considers Hoyer an asset and will not let lose him without receiving anything in return. There will likely be some interest in Hoyer around the league but chances are he will remain a Patriot until he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2013.

Patriots RB Kevin Faulk Likely To Retire

It is assumed that running back Kevin Faulk, the longest tenured Patriot (since 1999), will be retiring according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com. Faulk was approached by a reporter after the game and politely said that it wasn't the right time to talk about his plans. He didn't play in Super Bowl XLVI and because of that, he said there wasn't much to say in the aftermath of the game. Faulk had a challenging season after he returned on a one-year contract. He opened on the physically unable to perform list, and when he was activated, he was thrown right into the mix by playing 39 of 58 snaps in an Oct. 30 loss to the Steelers.

Patriots Rob Gronkowski, Matt Light Seen Partying Shirtless After Game

After losing Super Bowl XLVI to the Giants on Sunday evening, many Patriots appeared absolutely miserable while talking with the media. Wes Welker, who dropped what could have been a game-clinching catch, held back tears as he recalled the moment. Tom Brady sat alone at his locker for the better part of an hour before even moving. Brandon Spikes tweeted about “Suicidal Thoughts.” Bill Belichick was even more terse than usual. It was a depressing scene, but amid it all, tight end Rob Gronkowski and left tackle Matt Light were getting ready to party according to CBSBoston.com.

Patriots WR Deion Branch Hopes Team Will Re-Sign Him

Deion Branch's season didn't end the way he wanted it with the New England Patriots losing in the Super Bowl to the New York Giants Sunday night. Branch is hoping the ending of his career will have his preferred outcome - as a Patriot for at least one more year, according to ESPNBoston.com. "This is where I want to be, this is where I want to retire," he said. "This is why I came back, for the opportunity to play in this game. I'm pretty sure I will be here in this position next year." Branch, an 11-year veteran, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, and the receiver position would appear to be in flux in New England, where the lack of a true deep threat was exposed by the Giants defense Sunday night.
