During a winter in which everyone has been bashing coach Panthers John Fox and GM Marty Hurney, there actually is someone singing their praises. It’s Carolina running back DeAngelo Williams. “I think the front office and coaching staff are single-handedly prolonging my career and Jonathan Stewart's career,’’ Williams said a few weeks ago when he was attending festivities at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. "Thirty is like the new 50 in the NFL, especially when it comes to tailbacks.’’ He put it into a perspective that you don’t often hear, but it’s the perspective Fox and Hurney hold and it’s why they believe so strongly in a two-back system. “We’re each about 220 or 230 carries a year,’’ Williams said. “I’d rather have that than 300-plus carries a year. That wears on your legs and you’re not going to last long doing that. With me and Jonathan back there and sharing it the way we do, that’s a real treat and neither one of us is going to get worn out.’’

When Marshall, a restricted free agent, was given the second-round tender offer of $1.759 Million, there was speculation he would be an attractive option for teams in need of a cornerback. Marshall’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said late last week there was “nothing new” regarding his client and did not respond to a message seeking comment Monday.

The Carolina Panthers continued their low-budget approach to free agency, signing cornerback Marcus Hudson to a one-year contract on the heels of the deal for reserve offensive lineman Rob Pettiti. As Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill (S.C.) Herald notes, he played for the San Francisco 49ers previously and that is where the Panthers assistant special teams coach Jeff Rodgers comes from. Hudson appeared in 48 games for San Francisco and when he played on defense it was primarily in the sub packages.

Though there has been speculation that Carolina might be interested in acquiring Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn, the Panthers so far have shown no interest, according to a league source. The Browns are expected to try to trade Quinn now that former Carolina starter Jake Delhomme has signed, joining fellow newcomer Seneca Wallace, who was obtained from Seattle in a trade last week. The fact that the Panthers haven't pursued Quinn likely means the team either is focusing on drafting a quarterback to backup and compete with Matt Moore, or that there's at least one veteran they prefer more for that role.

"From what they are telling me, yeah, I do feel like it's my team now," Moore said in an interview Friday with Carolina Growl. Moore said he was "shocked" when his agent Dr. Lynn Lashbrook called to notify him that the Panthers were releasing veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme last Thursday on the eve of free agency. "I was completely caught off guard," Moore said. Most expected the Panthers to bring Moore and Delhomme to training camp and let them battle it out for the starting spot, but general manager Marty Hurney made the decision to release Delhomme and hand the reins over to Moore.

Panthers WR Dwayne Jarrett To Return Unless He Bombs Out In Training Camp?

It looks as though wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett is likely to stick with the Carolina Panthers unless he completely bombs out in training camp. That didn’t look like the case at the end of the 2009 season when Jarrett was declared inactive by coach John Fox before injuries forced him back on to the field. Steve Reed of The Gaston Gazette writes that there is really no reason to release Jarrett at this point and here’s why: The Panthers have to pay him about $530,000 in guaranteed money this year anyway as part of second portion of original rookie signing bonus and normally with most rookie contracts that money is paid it out well before the fourth season, but Jarrett has played so little (and been so unproductive) that he hasn’t triggered that second signing bonus under the terms of his contract, until now.

Panthers Searching For A Veteran QB To Battle Matt Moore?

Two league sources said the Panthers have put out word they're looking for someone to compete with Matt Moore for the starting job. That's a slight departure from what they said Friday when they announced the release of Jake Delhomme, but given that Moore's started seven NFL games, it makes sense. If that's the case, they're going to have to get creative, because there aren't many quarterbacks available by the conventional means.

Panthers Release Veteran FB Brad Hoover

Panthers FB Brad Hoover, one of the more popular players in Charlotte, was released Monday according to S Chris Harris on his Twitter feed. The 33-year-old fullback was due a $100,000 roster bonus soon, and coupled with his $860,000 base salary, made him an endangered species while also leaving the team with just three players 30 or older on the roster — K John Kasay, P Jason Baker and WR Steve Smith. It also leaves them with questions to answer among the players who remain. "If I state my opinion I might be the next on the long list of released players," Harris said on Twitter.
