Packers Sign DE Phillip Merling

The Packers signed former Dolphins DE Phillip Merling on Wednesday and released TE Cameron Ford and QB Nick Hill. The Dolphins cut Merling earlier this offseason. A second-round pick in 2008, Merling has played in 46 games with three starts, recording 66 tackles, 3½ sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception-return touchdown and eight passes defensed. He has some off-the-field problems, including an arrest for aggravated battery against his pregnant girlfriend in May 2010 — the charges were later dropped — and a torn Achilles tendon suffered in the 2010 offseason that cost him much of the ’10 season. Ford is a rookie out of Wake Forest and Hill, a first-year player out of Southern Illinois, signed with Green Bay on Jan. 20.

Rumors that Green Bay Packers president/CEO Mark Murphy would consider leaving his current post to return to college administration are simply that, according to the team's director of public affairs, Aaron Popkey. According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, Murphy could be a candidate for the vacant Stanford University athletic director job. The report stated that Murphy is rumored to be a candidate but does not cite any school or NFL sources on whether he is indeed interested in the position. In an email, Popkey said Murphy was out of the office for Tuesday's NFL owners meeting in Atlanta and dismissed talk that Murphy might be interested in the Stanford job. "Mark’s at an NFL meeting and not available today. With regard to the speculation, it’s simply just that. There’s no basis to it," Popkey wrote.

Packers Might Be Moving LB Clay Matthews To The Right Side

Packers first-round draft pick Nick Perry spent the team’s recent rookie camp at left outside linebacker, the position that Pro Bowler Clay Matthews has played the past two seasons. According to Pro Football Weekly, it might mean that Matthews could be moving to right outside linebacker this coming season. Considering how much bigger Perry is than Matthews, which makes him a more natural fit for the strong side, and the problems Matthews had on occasion with certain right tackles last season. A right-side shift for Matthews just might be in the offing.

Packers wide receiver Donald Driver created a stir when he tweeted that he would be a Green Bay Packer for life. But according to Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Driver shed some additional light on his playing status for the upcoming season. “I think so many people right now are worried if I’m going to be a Packer,” Driver said in a telephone interview. “I’m still under contract. My contract is not over with the Packers. I will be a Packer for life. I don’t think that’s ever going to change. I think that’s what I want the fans to understand. Don’t worry. If you haven’t heard it from me or you haven’t heard it from the Packers, you can’t listen to the reporters, the media. … You have to trust me, and you also have to trust the Packers that I will be a Packer for life.” Driver is in Los Angeles preparing for next week’s “Dancing With the Stars” finale. Driver expressed a willingness last January to take a pay cut, and his agent, Jordan Woy, said on Thursday he has discussed Driver’s contract with the Packers. Woy said he expects to work out the details once Driver returns to Green Bay following his dancing gig.

Former Packers RB Ahman Green Plots NFL Return At Age 35

Ahman Green hasn't appeared in an NFL game since January 2010, when the Green Bay Packers fell to the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC wild card. Green retired from the league in August 2011 -- or did he? The 35-year-old running back says he isn't done. "I've got at least five years left in me to play football," Green told FOXSportsWisconsin.com. "I came into the league in special teams and I'd have no problem doing that again. Playing special teams in kickoff coverage, punt coverage. Just put me anywhere. I'm a football player first. That's something my dad always reminded me. 'You're a football player, not just a running back.' " Green's career has diversified since leaving Green Bay: He spent 2010 with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL and 2011 with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes. Through it all, he's maintained a home close to Lambeau Field and wants back in with the Packers. "I know that I could help the team," Green said. "I'd be happy to play along with Aaron (Rodgers) a few more years and help those guys win another Super Bowl. I would love to be around."

A judge has placed suspended Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly on "shock probation" just months into his six-year jail stay. "Shock probation" provides first-time inmates early release after "experiencing the shock or trauma of being in jail," per KTRK-TV, which reported the Texas judge's decision Tuesday. Jolly was sentenced to six years in a Houston prison in November for violating the terms of his probation for a drug conviction. He now faces 200 hours of community service as part of the 10-year probation. It's another chapter in the story of Jolly's very public addiction to codeine in the form of "purple drank," Jolly's troubles with the substance have led to multiple arrests during and after his stint with the Packers.

Packers defensive linemen Mike Neal (four games) and Anthony Hargrove (eight games) face NFL suspensions this season, meaning the team can’t count on them for the start of the regular season. “The priority will be to be ready for the opening of our season with our 53 players,” said Packers coach Mike McCarthy during a press conference early this afternoon following the team’s third and final rookie orientation camp practice. Hargrove is appealing his suspension, which was imposed because of his involvement in the New Orleans’ bounty scandal, so it’s possible he could be available. Their banishment doesn’t begin until the start of the regular season. But McCarthy clearly can’t wait around in the hope either player can contribute, which is one reason the Packers selected defensive linemen Jerel Worthy and Mike Daniels in the draft.News goes here.

Quarless suffered a torn ACL in his right knee last December during a regular season game against the New York Giants. McCarthy said he will be “challenged” to return by the start of training camp in late July. McCarthy also said on Sunday following the Packers’ final rookie orientation camp that Quarless is champing at the bit and is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation.

Mike Ornstein Says $5K Bounty On Packers QB Aaron Rodgers Really A Joke

An email from an imprisoned friend of the Saints' coaching staff with a postscript saying "put me down for $5,000" on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has become another sore point between players being punished for New Orleans' bounty system and the NFL. The email, obtained by The Associated Press, was written from prison by marketing agent Mike Ornstein shortly before the Saints' 2011 season opener against the Packers. The last line states: "PS Gregg Williams put me down for $5000.00 on Rogers (sic)." Ornstein now says that was written "in total jest." Ornstein was sentenced to eight months in federal prison, which he served in Florence, Colo., for conspiring to scalp Super Bowl tickets and hawking fake "game-worn" jerseys. "It's a running joke going for three years," Ornstein said in a telephone interview this week, explaining he had been kidding Williams about bounties ever since the NFC Championship Game in 2010, after which the Minnesota Vikings told the NFL they believed the Saints had a bounty on quarterback Brett Favre.

Packers CB Charles Woodson Willing To Play Safety

Veteran cornerback Charles Woodson says he would be willing to move to safety for the Green Bay Packers if the team needed him there. In an interview on WAUK-AM in Milwaukee, Woodson said that he’d be happy to move to safety but he’s not sure who would take his place at cornerback. “I think that it comes down to what the other guys are going to be able to do as far as the cornerback position is concerned,” Woodson said. “If one of those guys can take over that role and make the plays that need to be made at corner ... with Nick Collins leaving, [and if] they need me to play safety, I’m not opposed to that. But I think that we have to make sure that cornerback position is going to be solidified and we’re comfortable with who is going to be out there at the corner.” The Packers selected Vanderbilt cornerback Casey Hayward in the second round of this year's draft, but it is unclear if he is ready to start. Woodson said he was thrilled the Packers used their first six draft picks on defense. “Last year, the way it went down and how poorly defensively we played, it was evident that we needed some extra push. So I was very excited.” The eight-time Pro Bowler (three times first-team All Pro) has played every one of his 14 seasons at cornerback. He has recored 54 interceptions and scored 12 touchdowns.

Lions Never Scheduled A Meeting With RB Ryan Grant

Last week, Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant‘s agent mentioned that his client would be meeting with the Detroit Lions on Monday. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, no meeting was ever scheduled. It was also reported that Grant had an offer on the table from the team, but that too appears to be in question now. The New England Patriots brought Grant in for a visit, but ultimately chose to sign Joseph Addai in recent days. If the Lions aren’t interested in him, the Packers would appear to be his best opportunity, but there’s still no guarantee that they’ll end up re-signing him.

Wolf is the son of former Packers general manager Ron Wolf and has spent the last eight seasons in the Packers' personnel department. Wolf's involvement in the Packers' drafts dates back to 1993.
Packers Rookie DT Jerel Worthy Says He Takes Plays Off, Just Like Everyone Else

Packers second-round draft pick Jerel Worthy has heard he takes plays off, he's an underachiever, he tires easily and he dogs it according to Rob Reischel of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Worthy won't even argue. What Worthy does insist, though, is he's striving to be more dependable, something he'll be given every chance to do in Green Bay. "The film speaks for itself," said Worthy, who left Michigan State after his junior year. "People criticize and say I may take a play off here or there; there's nobody in the NFL game today or college or all the way down to pee-wee who plays every play full speed, full-go without getting tired. It's impossible. All I can say is I'm going to come in and try to continue to work to be a lot more consistent, and I'm going to be a lot more consistent. That's going to be my goal. The plays that showed up in the highlight tape, that's the same plays that I'm going to transfer up to the NFL and do it on a consistent basis."

Steve Cokran reports Oakland is interested in Cedric Benson and Ryan Grant . The preference seems to be Ryan Grant who rushed for 559 yds in Green Bay last season, but Benson is said to have a real desire to join the silver and black . John Clayton from ESPN reports Benson has stated that he is still hoping to fill the void left behind when Michael Bush left for Chicago, and that he may be willing to work for the veteran league minimum to do so. Benson rushed for over a 1,000 yards last year for the third consecutive year and scored six touchdowns despite missing a game to suspension. Ryan Grant could be the guy the Raiders covet most, maybe due to his Green Bay roots.
