The Green Bay Packers have promoted tight ends coach Ben McAdoo to quarterbacks coach, Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports. McAdoo spent the 2005 season as an assistant offensive line/quality control coach with the San Francisco 49ers. In all three stops, McAdoo has coached under Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.

Rodgers added 257 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as the Packers went 14-1 in his starts.
Packers TE Jermichael Finley Says He Hopes To Remain In Green Bay

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley made the rounds at radio row on Friday as one of the few players not pushing some kind of product. Of course, he was asked about his contract situation and if there has been any progression. “Nothing new,’ Finley said. “It’s the NFL. It’s a business right now. I don’t even know what’s going on. You’ve just got to play that game. I don’t know anything and just hope for the best.” Finley gave a firm endorsement of Tom Clements being promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. “It’s awesome,” Finley said. “Tom, he’s one of those guys that details his craft. He’s going to be a good one. As you can see, he developed ARod to a great quarterback. You want people who have been there around you the whole time. Chemistry, too, it’s big in the NFL. Hopefully, I can sign with the Packers so I can experience that.”

The Green Bay Packers announced that they have promoted quarterbacks coach Tom Clements to offensive coordinator. "Tom has been an integral part of our success and our staff, making it an obvious decision to promote him to offensive coordinator," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "He has earned this opportunity and we look forward to continued offensive success in 2012." A Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback at Notre Dame in the 1970s before embarking on an NFL and Hall of Fame CFL playing career, Clements has coached quarterbacks for the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers and spent two seasons as the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator before joining the Packers in 2006. Clements interviewed for head coaching opportunities at Penn State University and with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this off-season. Clements replaces Joe Philbin, who is now the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. With Mike McCarthy called the plays, the Packers offense is expected to remain the same.

The Raiders have requested permission from the Packers to interview cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt about their defensive coordinator job, a league source said Wednesday night. New Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie knows Whitt from his years in the Packers' front office. The 33-year-old Whitt joined Green Bay's staff in 2008. The Raiders have already interviewed former Chargers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky about their vacant defensive coordinator job. Oakland hired the Texans' Greg Knapp to be its offensive coordinator earlier this week, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported.

Sporting News Names Packers GM Ted Thompson 2011 Executive Of The Year

The person responsible for keeping the Packers stockpiled is general manager Ted Thompson, who is Sporting News' executive of the year for the second time; the first came in 2007. Thompson, with 14 votes, finished ahead of San Francisco 49ers GM Trent Baalke (seven), Houston Texans GM Rick Smith (five) and Cincinnati Bengals president Mike Brown (three). Though the Packers didn't repeat as Super Bowl champs, they are in position to remain contenders for years to come, thanks largely to Thompson’s front office acumen. What’s his secret? Thompson says he doesn’t have one, he works hard and trusts what a prospect does on the field more than his measurements. “I look for good players,” Thompson said at last year’s NFL Scouting Combine. “There are probably ideal heights and lengths and stuff like that in terms of body makeup that you look for, but it doesn’t necessarily translate into the best 3-4 outside linebacker. James Harrison of Pittsburgh does not fit those height-length requirements, but he’s a marvelous player. As much as we can, we try to stick with guys that have proven they can play the game.” Of the 22 players who started for the Packers in Super Bowl XLV, 15 were drafted by Thompson, the Packers are one of the league’s most talented teams but also one of the youngest and that’s a great combination—one Thompson is responsible for.

Poll Says Packers QB Aaron Rodgers Most Marketable Player In The NFL

Aaron Rodgers is the most marketable player in the NFL, according to a survey of top sports business executives and analysts conducted by SportsBusiness Daily. The Green Bay Packers quarterback tops a list that, not surprisingly, is quarterback heavy. He edged out New England’s Tom Brady, Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning, New Orleans’ Drew Brees and Denver newcomer Tim Tebow for the top spot. Interstingly, Brady received more first-place votes than Rodgers, whose profile has taken off somewhat in the last few months with the State Farm commercials he is in. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning comes in seventh, one spot behind the top-ranked defensive player – Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu. Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton is eighth.

Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall Talks To Matt Flynn About Teaming Up In Miami

Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall has already talked to Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn, an unrestricted free agent in March, about joining him in South Florida, Jeff Darlington of NFL.com reports. "You've got some guys (quarterbacks) in the draft, but there's not too many guys out there just walking the streets," Marshall said. "Matt is available...We've talked. I reached out to him. I get it from Ray Lewis. Around this time of year, players talk to players." Marshall is playing in his third Pro Bowl after catching 81 passes for 1,214 yards with six touchdowns, all while catching passes for Chad Henne and Matt Moore. Henne is also an unrestricted free agent, while Moore is signed through next season. Flynn has spent the last few seasons playing under Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin, who was the offensive coordinator in Green Bay. That familiarity, plus a lucrative, long-term contract, would make him the No. 1 quarterback in Miami. "Obviously, Matt had a great year," Marshall said of Moore. "You don't want to take anything away from Matt, but I think we really bring in somebody who can compete and make the team better. We need someone who is going to grab a hold of our offense, hold everyone accountable and be that leader."

Green Bay Packers safety Nick Collins, who had spinal fusion surgery in late September, meets with his surgeon in March. If everything checks out, Collins will return next season according to Rob Reischel of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, if there's any doubt whatsoever, Collins will retire and spend far more time with his family. "It's cut-and-dried. If the doctor says I can go back, then I'm definitely going back," Collins said the day after Green Bay's season ended with a 37-20 loss to the New York Giants. "If he says stop, I'm stopping. That's it. Collins had surgery just more than a week following the injury and was in a neck brace until late October. Collins talked about wanting to become a coach, which many read as his way of saying his playing days were done. But Collins met with his doctors in December and got good news, keeping open the possibility that he could be cleared to play come March. "I always am going to say I'm going to come back, but at the end of the day, I still have to make a decision," Collins said. "I have to make sure everything's all right with the team doctor, the doctor that did the surgery, my family, my friends. "At the end of the day, it's going to be a tough decision, but I'm positive that I'm going to make it back."

Aaron Rodgers put up the best season passer rating in history (122.5) with other-worldly numbers of 4,643 yards, 45 touchdown passes and six interceptions, and along the way he managed to make State Farm relevant again in the insurance industry. It was that kind of year for the reigning Super Bowl MVP, as seemingly everything he touched turned to gold during the Green Bay Packers’ 15-1 campaign. With 413½ votes from our pool of 632 NFL players, coaches and executives, Rodgers won handily over second-place Drew Brees (112 votes). NFC North opponents were left doing a double-take while trying to slow Rodgers, a seventh-year pro.

According to two members of the Packers organization, its common knowledge that Packers coaches and executives who move on to bigger and better opportunities are instructed to leave the Packers staff alone. So don’t expect a similar staff raid like when Tony Sparano was hired by the Dolphins, and lured numbers members of Bill Parcells former Dallas staff to Miami according to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. That type of staff raiding his frowned upon in Green Bay, which perceives itself as a family more than a franchise. “Off limits,” one of the sources claimed. “Joe’s going to be building the core of his staff from outside.” Philbin skipped attending the Senior Bowl to get his family moved to Miami, and to hire his staff of assistants.

Packers Expected To Re-Sign RB Ryan Grant

The Green Bay Packers running game leaves plenty to be desired but Fox Sports Wisconsin reports that the team is expected to re-sign RB Ryan Grant during the offseason. Last year there was plenty of speculation that Grant could be released following the rise of James Starks and the fact that they used their third-round pick on Alex Green. Instead, Grant agreed to a pay cut and remained with the Packers which proved to be a wise decision as Green was lost for the season and Starks battled through injuries for a portion of the year. Brandon Saine looked good despite his limited role so it will be interesting to see how their backfield rounds out next season.

Packers Looking To Upgrade At Linebacker This Offseason

The Packers are not likely to stick with the status quo at outside linebacker as they did one year ago because Clay Matthews needs help. Outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene told Dan Pompei of the National Football Post that he never has seen a player get double and triple teamed as much as Matthews was this year. “You get a tight end chipping you, a back coming off the edge, a tackle, and then a guard fanning your way,” he said. The reason, obviously, is the Packers had no one else who could take advantage of singles. Dom Capers subsequently ended up dropping Matthews more and taking him out of what he does best—rushing the passer. Matthews still played at a very high level in 2011, but he needs a pass rush partner for the Packers to be a better defense.

Dolphins Not Assuming QB Matt Flynn Will Join Joe Philbin

Now that the Miami Dolphins have Joe Philbin in place as their next head coach, the attention swings to soon-to-be free agent QB Matt Flynn. Miami needs a quarterback and it just so happens that Philbin coached one of best available options while in Green Bay. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes that the Dolphins do have interest in Flynn but added that they’re not assuming that he’ll sign with the team simple because they brought in his former offensive coordinator to be their head coach. There will be a number of teams interest in Flynn if the Packers choose not to franchise him. Already we’ve heard that the Redskins and Browns have interest and the Seahawks could also check in on him at some point.

Tom Clements Expected To Replace Joe Philbin In Green Bay

A source familiar with the Packers' operation said it was expected that quarterbacks coach Tom Clements would replace Joe Philbin as offensive coordinator according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. McCarthy didn't deny that the hire most likely would come from within, but he would not commit to anything right now. "Your first intent is to look within," McCarthy said. "That's where you start. But I don't want to talk about that now. This is Joe's moment. He deserves all the attention. You don't replace people like Joe. I'm going to miss him personally a whole lot, forget as a professional. He's someone I enjoy being around. He's a great guy. This is a very good opportunity for him." Clements is a logical choice for McCarthy because he has experience as a coordinator, serving from 2004-'05 in that capacity with the Buffalo Bills. He came to the Packers in '06 and has been quarterbacks coach all six years.

Agent Says Packers Want To Sign TE Jermichael Finely To A Long-Term Deal

The Green Bay Packers want Jermichael Finley to return, and the tight end wants to come back. What's left to work out are the details. Finley is set to become a free agent after posting 55 receptions and career highs in both receiving yards (767) and touchdowns (8) this season. His agent told the Green Bay Press-Gazette the Packers would rather sign Finley to a long-term deal than use the franchise tag on him. "We've been speaking and they've made it clear they would like him to be back there and Jermichael's made it clear he would like to be back there," Blake Baratz said. "Now that the season's over there's a little more time to focus on the particulars." The two sides had discussions throughout the season, according to the report, but haven't set a timetable in getting a deal done.
