Will Rams WR Brandon Lloyd End Up With Patriots?

Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd told the Post-Dispatch at the end of the season that a big factor in where he play next season is where Josh McDaniels ended up per Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Lloyd's career took off after he joined McDaniels in Denver in 2009, and the pair reunited in St. Louis following the trade, but after one ill-fated season as Rams offensive coordinator, McDaniels now has the coordinator's title in New England. The Patriots could be a desirable landing spot for Lloyd for a couple of reasons, for one, the Patriots win and win at a high level and for another, the Patriots need help at wide receiver. Other than Wes Welker and Deion Branch, New England didn't have a wideout catch more than 15 passes, Welker, who led the league with 122 receptions, also is scheduled for unrestricted free agency, although it's hard to see the Patriots letting him walk. Under the old regime at Rams Park, the Rams were interested in re-signing Lloyd, but it's unclear at this point what the new regime thinks of him and there's also a different face on the other side of the negotiating table, because Lloyd recently signed with a new agent, St. Louis-based Tom Condon of CAA.

49ers WR Josh Morgan To Be A Hot Commodity In Free Agency?

An under the radar player who is expected to be a very hot free agent is 49ers receiver Josh Morgan. Teams are buzzing about the possibility of acquiring Morgan, who is considered a very good talent who should be available at a lesser price than the receivers on the top rung. The 49ers have been enthralled with Morgan for four years, but he never really had a breakout because of health issues and offensive ineptitude in previous seasons. A broken leg limited him to five games in 2011. But front office men see Morgan as someone with decent size, speed, toughness and playmaking ability.

Santa Clara Sets 49ers Stadium For Earlier Debut

Santa Clara officials are expected to approve a construction contract for the San Francisco 49ers' new stadium that calls on the facility to open in 2014, a year earlier than originally projected. City officials are scheduled to vote on the $878 million building contract Tuesday, the San Jose Mercury News reported. It requires construction to begin by July 1 and the stadium to be completed in time to open at the end of August 2014. The contractor, Turner-Devcon, would be fined $6 million for each 49ers game missed after that deadline, plus daily fines that could hit $20 million which could cause the contractor to lose money on the project. If Turner-Devcon completes the stadium in time for the 2014 preseason, it would earn a $5 million bonus. "We're going to be playing football here in 2014," Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews said. "I have no doubt whatsoever."

When George Paton pulled out of the running with the St. Louis Rams it made it a one-horse race for the team’s general manager job. Les Snead won that race today when he was hired as the GM, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. As recently as last night, Paton was the favorite to land the job, but he decided to remain with the Minnesota Vikings and was promoted to the role of assistant general manager. Snead comes from the Atlanta Falcons where he spent the last 13 years, the last three as the club’s director of player personnel. Snead was among 10 candidates the Rams considered and nine they interviewed.

San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson is scheduled to become a free agent in March, but it doesn't sound like he's going anywhere. Goldson told radio station KGMZ in the Bay Area on Friday that he wants to return to the 49ers and the feeling is mutual, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "I think those guys are excited about me being there and I'm sure they want me back," Goldson said. "They've expressed how much they want me back. I want to be back there. Like I said, if I'm not there, I'd be shocked." Goldson, 27, returned to the 49ers last season on a one-year deal which the Chronicle reported was worth $1 million in base salary. According to the report, Goldson had previously rejected a five-year contract from the team. It's possible the 49ers could use the franchise tag on Goldson, which is expected to be worth around $6.4 million for safeties.

After visiting 15 NFL teams before signing with the St. Louis Rams, offensive lineman Jovan Olafioye is returning to the B.C. Lions after failing his physical with the Rams, Allan Maki of The Globe and Mail reports. "The St. Louis Rams have notified Jovan Olafioye that they have released him from his contract due to their concerns about a medical issue," Dan Vertlieb, Olafioye's agent said. "Given the closing window to explore opportunities in the NFL in Jovan’s current CFL contract, he will return to the B.C. Lions for another season after thoroughly addressing his status." Undrafted out of North Carolina Central in 2010, Olafioye has spent the last two seasons with the B.C. Lions, earning All-Star honors in 2011. The 6-foot-6, 325-pound lineman worked out for and/or visited 15 teams over the last six weeks, including a January 5 workout for the Rams.
49ers WR Josh Morgan Finally Sprinting, Hopes To Stay In San Francisco

49ers wide receiver Joshua Morgan is running, and even sprinting, again on the surgically repaired right leg that limited him to only five games in 2011 for the NFC West champions. "I'm back!" Morgan said Thursday, sporting his typical smile as he left team headquarters. "I'm running again and have been for about two weeks - yes, sprinting." Morgan broke a bone in his lower leg Oct. 9 against Tampa Bay, had surgery to have screws inserted and was placed on season-ending injured reserve. It was tough watching as his team went 13-3 in coach Jim Harbaugh's first season to end an eight-year drought without a playoff berth or winning record. While Morgan is set to become a free agent, Harbaugh has said the team plans to bring him back for next season. Morgan insists he'll be ready to re-sign the moment the team reaches out.

49ers quarterback Alex Smith will be a free agent this offseason but it is highly unlikely he will be made available to any of the 31 other teams in the NFL. According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, the 49ers' braintrust is "unanimous" in their desire to bring Smith back as their starting quarterback. "We're all in lockstep as an organization that Alex Smith is our guy," said head coach Jim Harbaugh. "It's well-documented. You saw the way he played this year. (He is a) tremendous leader on our football team." Harbaugh will open the job up to competition between Smith and Colin Kaepernick after Smith is re-signed but Smith is firmly expected to win that battle. It is extremely unlikely that the 49ers will enter the Peyton Manning sweepstakes.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick says he expects to be part of an "open and fair" competition to winning the starting QB job in 2012 according to Dan Hinxman of the Reno Gazette-Journal. The lockout hampered Kaepernick's development during his rookie year after being drafted by the 49ers out of Nevada. The question is whether he will be competing with Alex Smith, who is a free agent this offseason. Jim Harbaugh has made it known that he wants Smith to be re-signed.

49ers DE Ray McDonald Arrested On Outstanding Warrant

Ray McDonald, a fifth-year defensive lineman for the 49ers, was arrested early Wednesday morning in Sunnyvale for an outstanding warrant, stemming from his 2010 arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence in San Mateo County. McDonald, 27, was released from the Santa Clara County Main Jail just after 7 a.m., according to Sgt. Jose Cordoza of the Santa Clara Sheriff's Department. Sunnyvale police pulled over McDonald for an apparent traffic violation and he was arrested at about 2 a.m. when officers learned of his outstanding arrest warrant, according to Sunnyvale Capt. Dave Verbrugge. "No other charges filed," Verbrugge said. "He was cooperative and no problems." A call to the 49ers seeking comment was not immediately returned. McDonald was seen entering the team's Santa Clara facility Tuesday afternoon for an apparent offseason workout. McDonald was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on June 12, 2010 for suspicion of driving under the influence in San Mateo County. Following that 2010 arrest, McDonald told reporters at the 49ers facility: "I just want to let you all know that whenever it works itself out, you'll know everything that's going on. I just want to apologize for making this a distraction because that's not my intent. My intent is to come out here and work hard and try to win ballgames this year."

Seahawks Interested In Hosting Future Super Bowl

The Seattle Seahawks have submitted paperwork to the National Football League regarding hosting a future Super Bowl at CenturyLink Field, Aaron Levine of Q13 FOX News in Seattle reports. According to Levine, CenturyLink Field has the capacity to meet the 70,000-seat requirement -- the announced attendance at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday was under 69,000 -- the area (Seattle, Bellevue, Everett, Tacoma) meets the 25,000 hotel room capacity and there's no shortage of exhibit space in the city. The one major hurdle, the 50-degree average temperature requirement, could be waived as was the case in the awarding of Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey in February of 2014. Super Bowl XLIX will be held in Glendale, Arizona and the NFL is looking at Los Angeles or London as potential hosts sites for the fiftieth Super Bowl (Super Bowl L) in 2016.
