Redskins Have Real Interest In QB Kyle Orton

According to John Keim of the Washington Examiner, the Redskins were interested in Orton when he was on waivers, but did not claim him. CSNWashington reported it was because of potential locker-room friction with Grossman. One league source said it was as much salary related (Orton would have been owed $3 million for one month’s work). By signing Orton, clearly a cheaper alternative than Peyton Manning, it would enable the Redskins to focus elsewhere in the draft – and still have a good chunk of change to spend in free agency. They likely would still draft a quarterback, if they view Orton as a one or two year guy, then maybe it could work – especially if they upgraded the receiving corps to pair with a less error-prone QB.

Giants RB Brandon Jacobs Sorry For Comments About Gisele Bundchen

New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs has apologized for comments he made Tuesday regarding Gisele Bundchen, Tom Brady’s wife, and her criticism of the Patriots' receivers. "Given the fact that it's a colleague of mine's wife, I do apologize for saying that, because I shouldn't have said that," Jacobs said Wednesday on "The Doug Gottlieb Show" on ESPN Radio. "It's his wife and I should respect that just as much as anyone else." Jacobs told reporters at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday that, “She just needs to continue to stay cute and shut up.” Jacobs did stand by his comments about Bundchen's appearance and again called her "cute." "No question, he should take that as a compliment," Jacobs said of Brady. "If he finds something wrong with that, then that's his problem."

Colts QB Peyton Manning Likely To Become A Redskin?

Mike Freeman of CBS Sports reports that "everyone" he talks to in the NFL believes Peyton Manning will become a Redskin if and when he becomes a free agent. This comes on the heels of a weekend report from two people close to Manning saying "it is very likely" Manning will end up with the Redskins. It is clear both the Redskins and the Dolphins will pursue Manning. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan cannot afford another losing season if he wants to keep his job and for once the Redskins have plenty of salary cap room.

Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com sees some changes coming this offseason in the Philadelphia Eagles' receiving corps, while he believes the team will put the franchise tag on DeSean Jackson later this month, Caplan as well as NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora believes the Eagles will shop Jackson around the league. Caplan also predicts the Eagles will pursue free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress, it was no secret last year that Burress wanted to play for the Eagles as he left prison wearing a Philadelphia ball cap. The Jets won a bidding war, giving Plax over $3 million guaranteed, Caplan believes Burress could upgrade the team's red-zone offense, and points out that in-house supposed red-zone target Riley Cooper "doesn't fight for the football" enough to excel in that role. The Eagles likely would not be signing Plax as a starter, he'd be a third receiver and inside-the-20s guy.

By franchising Jackson, he can sign a one-year tender for a set salary for 2012, but the team could move him in a deal for what they deem fair compensation. If no one wants to trade for Jackson, the Eagles would then keep him and consider his one-year deal as a "prove it" type contract.

Cowboys WR Laurent Robinson Hopes To Remain In Dallas

Laurent Robinson watched the Super Bowl on Sunday thinking about how the Cowboys need to be playing on that stage. Having the division rival New York Giants win their second Super Bowl in five years was considered a motivational tool. “It’s motivation for us next year,” Robinson said Tuesday. But what’s most interesting about his response is that Robinson might not even be with the Cowboys next season. After all, the Cowboys wide receiver is an unrestricted free agent. During a Tuesday charity event at Medical City Hospital in Dallas, Robinson was even sporting his No. 81 Cowboys throwback jersey. “I’m loving wearing this jersey,” Robinson said at the "Baskets of Hope" event. “I’m hoping to stay here as a Cowboy. But we’ll see on March 13 when free agency starts. Hopefully my dream can come true and I can stay a Cowboy.”

"Mat's surgery was a success and they expect him to make a full recovery!!," McBriar's wife Erin posted on Twitter. McBriar was diagnosed with drop foot during the 2011 season, believed to be caused by nerve damage. The foot started to give McBriar trouble prior to the Oct. 23 game against St. Louis and he was inactive the next week against Philadelphia, he returned for the next six games before the Cowboys placed him on injured reserve the day before the regular-season finale at the New York Giants. McBriar said at the time he was in talks with the team for a few weeks about going on IR and it was a mutual decision. After the season, McBriar was examined over a three-day period at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he was diagnosed with an intraneural ganglion cyst below his left knee.

Exultant fans of the Super Bowl champion New York Giants packed into downtown Manhattan for a victory parade on Tuesday, blowing on horns, dancing salsa and hoisting signs with the triumphant line "Believe in Blue." Led by quarterback and game Most Valuable Player Eli Manning, the Giants erased an eight-point third-quarter deficit on Sunday to defeat the New England Patriots in a stunning repeat of their last Super Bowl win, also against the Patriots four years ago. New York police declined to estimate the crowd size, although turnout was easily in the thousands. The Giants had looked to have no hope of even competing for the National Football League title after enduring a four-game skid late in the regular season that put them in danger of missing the playoffs. But the team reversed its fortunes to reclaim the greatest prize in North American sports.

Per CSN Washington's Rich Tandler and Jason LaCanfora, the Redskins are set to use their franchise tag on tight end, Fred Davis. The fifth year player is coming off a career year registering nearly 800 yards and three touchdowns before having to sit out the last four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The franchise tag for tight ends this season is expected to be about $5.5 million. The Redskins use of the franchise tag on Davis may spell the end for former first round draft pick Laron Landry. Many NFL experts thought the Redskins would exercise their franchise tag on Landry or send him packing.

NBC cameras showed Ballard attempting to run and cut on the sidelines before he crumpled to the Lucas Oil Stadium turf. Signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State in 2010, Ballard started 13 of 14 games in 2011, catching 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns this season. Ballard is not signed for 2012, but is "exclusive rights" free agent. Suffering a torn ACL in February likely means Ballard will not be ready for the start of the season.

During one of the segments in the debut of Costas Tonight on NBC Sports Network, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones chimed in on a topic that had been addressed before he took the stage. Jones, who played college football at Arkansas, said that he has had "50 concussions." He then joked that, if he hadn't suffered so many blows to the head, he would have been the President of the U.S. instead of the owner of the Cowboys.

Redskins RB Tim Hightower Hopes To Remain In Washington

Tim Hightower would like to return to the Washington Redskins this coming season. But his first order of business has to be recovering from a torn ACL that ended his 2011 campaign after six games. The Redskins have younger options now too after Roy Helu and Evan Royster stepped up in his absence. Hightower is a native of Alexandria, Va., so staying at home and playing for the Redskins is his first choice. “I called it home growing up here, and to be able to call it home for my job, that would be great,” Hightower told the team’s Web site. “I love this organization. Coming back here made me realize how much it would mean for me to be here. Getting a chance to play here and be around family, and just go places and be around fans and this city, it was special for me. This is somewhere I would like to play a long time.” Hightower might not be healthy enough to hit the practice field until mid-June and that is if everything goes according to plan. He could be added for depth but Helu and Royster had moments late in the season for a team that will focus its offseason on adding a quarterback.

Redskins Plan On Re-Signing LB London Fletcher

Redskins GM Bruce Allen mentioned that they intend to bring back MLB London Fletcher next season. “We want to, we want to–and he wants to come back,” Allen said, via Redskins.com. “We’re just waiting for the season to finish, and then we’re gonna take care of business. He’s a captain. We want our captain back.” Fletcher, 36, continued to produce at a high level despite his age and wound up making his third straight Pro Bowl this season. In fact, Fletcher has never missed a game in his NFL which is absolutely astounding when you consider that he’s played in the middle of a defense for fourteen seasons.

Brandon Jacobs Says He Wants To Remain With The Giants

Sunday night, shortly after the Giants defeated the Patriots, running back Brandon Jacobs was asked by SNY’s Jonas Schwartz whether he wants to return for the 2012 season. “Oh no question. I wanted to come back before all of this stuff happened,” said Jacobs according to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger, who completed his seventh season with the Giants. "I just hope there are some things that can be worked out. Now’s not the time to focus on that.” Those things are his roster bonus of $500,000 due next month and his base salary of $4.4 million, none of which is guaranteed. The $4.9-million total figure is a hefty tag for a No. 2 back, so Jacobs and the Giants both realize some money must be shuffled, whether in the form of an extension or a pay cut similar to the one he took this past season. “I just hope some things get worked out,” said the 29-year-old Jacobs, who had 571 yards in the regular season and 164 more in the playoffs. “I want to retire a Giant.”

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Giants WR Mario Manningham said that he's not sure where he will play in 2012. Manningham is an impending free agent this offseason after helping the Giants win Super Bowl XLVI. "I don't know where I'm going to end up," he said. "I'm not really thinking about that right now. All I'm thinking about is winning this game." He finished the Super Bowl with five catches for 73 yards on nine targets, and his 38-yard catch in the fourth quarter helped set up the Giants for the game-winning score.

Giants Defeat Patriots 21-17 To Win Super Bowl XLVI

Eli Manning and the New York Giants did it again, beating the New England Patriots with another game-winning drive in the Super Bowl. Ahmad Bradshaw scored on a six-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds remaining to lift the Giants to a 21-17 win. Manning led the 88-yard drive to win the game, just like he orchestrated an 83-yard drive to win the 2008 Super Bowl over the Patriots, which ended New England's hopes of a perfect season. With time running down, Bradshaw nearly sat at the half-yard line before falling back into the end zone for the touchdown. Tom Brady completed a 19-yard pass to Deion Branch on 4th-and-16, but a last- second Hail Mary pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

Giants Coach Tom Coughlin Doesn't Plan On Retiring

Tom Coughlin is looking forward to the parade and a couple weeks off to reflect on the Giants’ second championship in five seasons. Then he will begin preparations for defending the title. The 65-year-old coach sees no reason to retire now. “I mean, it’s what I do,” Coughlin said Monday morning, hours after New York beat the New England Patriots 21-17 in the Super Bowl. “So the alternative I’ve never really given it a whole lot of consideration. (Just coach) as long as I can.” Coughlin could be around for a while following his second title as a head coach. He signed a contract extension in July that runs through next season, but it looks as the Giants could revisit that deal following the franchise’s fourth Super Bowl win.
