Steelers TE Weslye Saunders Suspended First Four Games Of 2012 Season

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Weslye Saunders has been suspended for the first four games of the 2012 season, Aaron Wilson of Scout.com reports. Which policy Saunders violated to earn the suspension was not disclosed. Saunders was suspended for his final college season at South Carolina for making improper contact with agents. A foot injury hampered Saunders at last year's Combine and caused him to undrafted in April's draft. Saunders will eligible to participate in the team's off-season workout program, including OTAs and mini-camps, and can participate in training camp and the preseason, if Saunders makes the 53-man roster, he will have to sit out the first four games of the season, which would cost him $109,412 of his $465,000 base salary.

49ers DE Ray McDonald Arrested On Outstanding Warrant

Ray McDonald, a fifth-year defensive lineman for the 49ers, was arrested early Wednesday morning in Sunnyvale for an outstanding warrant, stemming from his 2010 arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence in San Mateo County. McDonald, 27, was released from the Santa Clara County Main Jail just after 7 a.m., according to Sgt. Jose Cordoza of the Santa Clara Sheriff's Department. Sunnyvale police pulled over McDonald for an apparent traffic violation and he was arrested at about 2 a.m. when officers learned of his outstanding arrest warrant, according to Sunnyvale Capt. Dave Verbrugge. "No other charges filed," Verbrugge said. "He was cooperative and no problems." A call to the 49ers seeking comment was not immediately returned. McDonald was seen entering the team's Santa Clara facility Tuesday afternoon for an apparent offseason workout. McDonald was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on June 12, 2010 for suspicion of driving under the influence in San Mateo County. Following that 2010 arrest, McDonald told reporters at the 49ers facility: "I just want to let you all know that whenever it works itself out, you'll know everything that's going on. I just want to apologize for making this a distraction because that's not my intent. My intent is to come out here and work hard and try to win ballgames this year."

New England Patriots wide receiver Chad Ochocinco appeared in an Ohio court for a traffic violation on Monday, the day after his team lost in Super Bowl XLVI, according to WXIX TV in Cincinnati. Ochocinco tweeted about his appearance Monday. "Court appearance done in Cincinnati, having to appear in court for window tint being to [sic] dark is a bit extreme, nonetheless no jail time," he wrote. The former Cincinnati Bengals receiver was reportedly fined $200 for driving with a suspended license and committing a window-tinting violation in July. He had originally been scheduled to appear in December, but when he failed to be there, his date was postponed until Monday, according to the TV station.

Vikings Stadium Plan Near Metrodome On Fast Track

A plan to build a new stadium for the Minnesota Vikings next to the Metrodome is on the fast track, Mike Kaszuba of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. According to Ted Mondale, Governor Mark Dayton's chief stadium negotiator, the state's plan would have the Vikings playing their home games at the Metrodome through the 2015 season while a new stadium is being built. After that season, construction on the new stadium would reach 75 percent completion, allowing for the current Metrodome to be torn down and turned into a plaza for parking and pregame activities. The Vikings would play a couple of games at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota, but could open the new stadium during the 2016 season. "I would think 2016 would be the 'go live' year," Mondale said. "Maybe the first two games you play (at TCF Bank Stadium) but before it gets cold, you'd be ready to go (at the new stadium)." Mondale hopes to have a plan in time for a spring vote by the Legislature.

Shahid Khan Wants To Grow Jacksonville, Not Just Jaguars

Many have tabbed new Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan as a savvy businessman who will approach owning the Jaguars in a different manner than Wayne Weaver did. We've already seen it a bit with Khans "bravado" and the announcement that the team will change the primary uniform color and get entirely new Nike jerseys in 2013. It looks like Khan's business mind is going to work for the city of Jacksonville as well and not just for the franchise. "There are a huge amount of decisions made in global centers like London or Hamburg, Germany," Khan said. "Jacksonville is not on their checklist or on their list of cities. They might have Miami or cities with bigger names. If a multinational company is expanding, they need to know Jacksonville is an option," Khan told the Florida-Times Union in Indianapolis on Friday. "So if we are fortunate to be playing a game, the city fathers, the development leaders need to be on the plane selling the city and meeting with some key decision makers. You can have appointments lined up." Khan explained that Jacksonville has a great deep-water port that is underutilized and doesn't have near the activity it did in the 1980's and the 1990's when Khan would make trips to Jacksonville three times a month. He also said when the Jaguars play in Europe, he plans to fly out local economic developers to meet with foreign business leaders.

Los Angeles Suddenly Long-Shot Option For Raiders

Raiders owner Mark Davis said Jan. 10 that he already has received offers from investors who want to build stadiums in the Los Angeles area about the prospect of the Raiders relocating to the part of the state they left after the 1994 season. Davis declined to go into specifics. However, he made it abundantly clear that Los Angeles remains a viable option as long as the Raiders don’t have a better option than the Oakland Coliseum in its current state. “Los Angeles is a possibility,” Davis said. “Wherever’s a possibility. We need a stadium.” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell splahsed a tub of cold water on the Raiders, or any other NFL team, moving to Los Angeles by saying, “We want to keep our teams where they are.” Further, Goodell said if the NFL returns to Los Angeles at some point, it likely would be with one or two expansion teams.

The National Football League’s $200 million contribution all but ensures that the 49ers will go forward with their plan for a new stadium in Santa Clara. Barring a major setback – such as construction delays, or a legal ruling against changes from the deal Santa Clara voters approved in June 2010 – the 49ers will be heading 40 miles south by the 2015 season. In terms of government assistance, the 49ers are getting a deal they could not have dreamed of attaining in San Francisco. Santa Clara’s City Council has agreed to provide an $850 million loan for the stadium. A group of Santa Clara stadium opponents has demanded a referendum on this change in scope of the city commitment, but the council has refused, and its attorneys maintain that it is consistent with the intent of the voter-approved Measure J.

Roger Goodell Says There Are No Plans To Expand NFL Anytime Soon

During his annual Super Bowl news conference, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday there hasn't been any discussion about adding to the league's 32 teams, and indicated he's not too keen about the idea of shifting a franchise, either. "We have not talked about expansion in the league at all. It has not been on our agenda. It is not something we've focused on with our membership. And I don't see that in the foreseeable future," Goodell said. "We want to keep our teams where they are. We believe that's healthier for the league in the long term. We're working to get stadiums built and make sure we do whatever we can to make sure those teams are successful in those communities." Los Angeles, the second-largest market in the U.S., has been without an NFL team since the Rams and Raiders both left after the 1994 season. "We would like to be back in Los Angeles, if we can do it correctly," Goodell said. "There are a lot of issues that have to be balanced there."

A man has filed a lawsuit against San Diego Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips alleging the player broke a Champagne bottle over his head at a Pacific Beach bar in 2009 according to Kristina Davis of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Kam Saran filed the lawsuit in San Diego Superior Court in November. The suit says Phillips struck or dropped the bottle on Saran’s head at Bar West. Saran, then 24, suffered a laceration and closed-head injury as a result, according to the suit. Phillips’ attorney responded to the suit in December, denying all allegations. San Diego police investigated the Nov. 23, 2009, incident when it occurred but made no arrests.

Former Cowboys and Colts offensive lineman Kurt Vollers has been sentenced to 2-1/2 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to distribute marijuana. U.S. District Judge Sidney Fitzwater sentenced Vollers in federal court in Dallas on Friday, almost two years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to sell more than 100 kilograms of marijuana. He could have received a 40-year prison term. The 31-year-old played for Dallas from 2002-04 and appeared in two games for Indianapolis in 2005. Prosecutors say Vollers helped three other men in delivering marijuana to the Dallas area from January 2006 through May 2008.

Chapel Hill police say the son of new Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey is among three former North Carolina athletes arrested for possession of cocaine. Police say Shane Michael Mularkey was among the three arrested. The 21-year-old Mularkey played in all 13 games for the Tar Heels in 2009, but school spokesman Kevin Best said he left the team after the 2010 season. A Jaguars spokesman says the team is aware of the arrest, adding that it is a personal matter and that Mike Mularkey has no comment at this time. Also arrested Friday were 21-year-old Nicole Marie Suarez and 20-year-old Jacob Carl Groeschen.

A federal judge has set an April 2 trial date for NFL wide receiver Sam Hurd, who is charged with trying to create a drug-distribution network. U.S. District Judge Jorge Solis, in an order Wednesday, set a pretrial conference for March 21 before an April trial in Dallas federal court, the trial could be delayed as Hurd, alleged co-conspirator Toby Lujan and federal prosecutors file motions beforehand. Hurd, 26, is accused of trying to buy large quantities of marijuana and cocaine, including an alleged buy of one kilogram of cocaine. He was arrested outside of a Chicago-area steakhouse on Dec. 14 and cut shortly afterward by the Chicago Bears. Hurd, a San Antonio native who played for the Bears and the Dallas Cowboys, has pleaded not guilty.

DeMaurice Smith Says NFL Won’t Bully Players On HGH Testing

The head of the NFL Players Association insists the league won’t “bully” its way to a test for human growth hormone. At his annual Super Bowl news conference, NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said talks continue in a bid to resolve the impasse over adding HGH to the NFL’s testing program—six months after the labor deal ending the lockout included a provision to allow checking for that performance-enhancing drug once players approved the process. Originally, the league hoped it could start testing for HGH as soon as Week 1 of this season. Now there’s no certainty it’ll happen by the beginning of next season. “No one will bully us into a test,” Smith said Thursday. “No one will force the players to accept something that’s unfair. How could we?” The union has raised questions about the detection methods and appeals process. “We are going to continue to fight and ensure that due process is something that is not thrown away at the expense of just having the test,” said Smith, who is up for re-election in March.

NFL owners convened Thursday in Indianapolis for a short meeting in which they were expected to approve the San Francisco 49ers' new stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. It was unclear whether that will mean the first batch of funding through the NFL's new version of stadium financing. The NFL enjoys a host of oversight approvals with new stadiums, including the debt, lease and potential league contributions. The team's bankers were expected to be at the meeting as well. The team will be responsible for around $850 million of debt. The status of other teams in need of new stadiums was also expected to be discussed.

A revamped Illinois Sports Facilities Authority board tabled a measure Wednesday that would approve a $2.6 million payment to the Chicago Park District for improvements to Soldier Field after members decided to review the relationship between the two agencies, including the subsidies the agency is required to give to the district. The funding is required as part of a deal for stadium renovations completed in 2003. The other annual subsidy is for maintenance, projected at $4.4 million this year. Both increase by 3 percent annually independently of the authority's revenue and do not reach a maximum, ISFA officials said Wednesday. Board members meeting for just the second time expressed concern about the open-ended arrangement and how the authority doesn't receive revenue from Soldier Field events.

St. Louis Commission Approves $124M Plan To Upgrade Edward Jones Dome

The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission unveiled a plan Wednesday that calls for $124 million in improvements to the Edward Jones Dome in hopes of making sure the city doesn’t lose another NFL team. The commission had faced a Wednesday deadline to deliver the plan to the St. Louis Rams, which leases the dome. The lease requires the dome to be “first tier,” or among the top 25 percent of all NFL stadiums in several categories. If not, the Rams can break the lease after the 2014 season and potentially move. Owner Stan Kroenke is a Missouri native, but has been non-committal about staying in St. Louis. With Los Angeles organizers actively seeking a team, St. Louis fans are worried the Rams might leave, just like the Cardinals did after the 1987 season. “There are a lot of people who say this can’t be like Jerry Jones’ Cowboys Stadium,” CVC director Kathleen Ratcliffe said. “We’re confident this proposal meets the requirement of first tier.”
