Jaguars Move DT Tyson Alualu To Defensive End

The Jacksonville Jaguars see upside in moving Tyson Alualu outside.

The Jaguars have shifted the former first-round draft pick from defensive tackle to defensive end, getting the 6-foot-3, 295-pound Hawaiian in a run-stopping role while allowing him to work in space.

"We feel it's a good fit," coach Gus Bradley said Wednesday. "He's all in favor of it, feels like it's a better fit for him."

Alualu was the 10th overall pick in the 2010 draft, a selection widely considered a reach. It didn't help that Alualu injured his right knee in the preseason of his rookie year and instead of getting surgery, he played two years with nagging pain and occasional swelling.

Now, though, Alualu's knee feels the best it has since college and could allow him to flourish in his new role off the edge. "I tell you what, it's been the best it's felt for the offseason," Alualu said. "It's real close to 100 percent."

The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up another New England Patriots castoff by claiming defensive tackle Kyle Love off waivers.

Love was released by the Patriots Wednesday due to concerns stemming from a recent diabetes diagnosis. Love had lost a considerable amount of weight and the team was apparently concerned about his health moving forward.

Jacksonville also claimed former New England defensive tackle Brandon Deaderick earlier this week.

Love started next to Vince Wilfork last season and played half of the Patriots' defensive snaps.

QB's Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne Split Snaps At Jaguars OTAs

The Jacksonville Jaguars have emphasized competition at all positions throughout the offseason. The new coaching staff has backed that up with their early deployment of snaps in organized team activities.

Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne, perhaps the worst QB position group in the league, are rotating with the first team evenly.

"It's going good," coach Gus Bradley said of the competition. "We're rotating by period. There's a lot of competition, and they're battling it. Everything we do, we're trying to create some sort of competition for our team. Hopefully as OTAs go on, we get more and more of those situations to evaluate them. I think once we get pads on and see how they react in different situations, it will become more clear."

The Associated Press suggested on Twitter that Gabbert has struggled with short passes in practice, which is not a new phenomenon, but we wouldn't read too much into OTA performances just yet. The bigger news here is that Henne will be given a legitimate chance to earn the starting job.

Jaguars Rookie QB Jordan Rodgers Undergoes Sports Hernia Surgery

Quarterback Jordan Rodgers, signed by the Jaguars as a rookie free agent after not being drafted, will be sidelined until training camp after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia Tuesday, coach Gus Bradley said.

Rodgers, the younger brother of Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers, suffered the injury the first day of rookie camp on Friday May 3. He practiced Saturday and then sat out the final practice on Sunday.

Rodgers' absence leaves Matt Scott, also signed as an undrafted rookie, as the third quarterback in camp behind Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne.

The Jaguars have 11 more practices left before the start of training camp -- eight organized teams activities and three veteran minicamp practices.

Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon Denies He Has Substance Abuse Problem

It is often said that those who do not understand their mistakes are doomed to repeat them. Case in point: speaking after the first day of OTAs at the Jacksonville Jaguar training complex, suspended wide receiver Justin Blackmon was directed asked by the media if he had a substance abuse problem. "No, I would say I don't" Blackmon answered according to Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union.

Blackmon went on to state, "Out of this whole thing one of the main things I would say that I had a problem with was just making a poor decision, making a selfish decision at that and not thinking about the long-term of it and just thinking about at the time. If you want to ask if I have a problem? I have a problem with making a poor decision.”

No one is questioning Blackmon's poor decision-making, but his pattern of making those poor decisions under the influence of alcohol and controlled substances is both undeniable and troubling. Blackmon has been charged with DUI twice since 2010 and faces a four-game suspension for substance-abuse violations that are not related to either arrest. Another "poor decision" like these could end his career, result in a year-long suspension from the game he loves, and/or result in hurting innocent people who should not have to pay for the fact that he seemingly just doesn't get it, the first step in recovery from subtance abuse is admitting you have a problem, clearly Blackmon has not even dealt with that hurdle.

Jaguars Fans Click Away On Website To Say No To Tim Tebow

Bold City Brigade, a non-profit group whose goal is to engage the local passion for Jacksonville's NFL franchise, has set up a website called evenifhesreleased.com, where fans can voice their feelings about not wanting Tim Tebow on their favorite team—with just one click.

By early Thursday afternoon, the site already had more than 80,000 people check the box for "I Support This Message." That growing number is referred to as "Endorsements From Real Jaguars Fans That Don't Need Tim Tebow."

The name of the site stems from a statement first-year general manager David Caldwell made soon after being hired in January. While Tebow was then still with the New York Jets, Caldwell made it clear that his team would not be interested in the quarterback.

"I can't imagine a scenario where he'd be a Jaguar, even if he's released," Caldwell said on Jan. 10.

Jaguars Owner Shad Khan "Fascinated'' By All The Tim Tebow Questions

Jaguars owner Shad Khan said Tuesday at the NFL Career Development Symposium in Philadelphia that he is "fascinated'' by all the Tim Tebow talk swirling around the Jaguars, Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union reports.

"We're looking for the best players obviously for us that help us win. How many players are in the NFL? I would assume it's 90 X 32 at this point, right? So, ballpark about 3,000 players, correct? Why one player?...Why do you ask about one player? What about the other 2,999. Because I am fascinated with that,'' Khan said according to the New York Daily News.

One reason is that Tebow is a Jacksonville native who played at Florida and has a large following in the Jacksonville area.

He also indicated that he is letting general manager David Caldwell decide whether to bring in Tebow and Caldwell said when he was hired that he couldn't imagine a scenario in which Tebow would be signed by the Jaguars. And a Khan spokesman said when Tebow was cut by the New York Jets last week that he is not in the Jaguars plans.

On Caldwell and head coach Gus Bradley making the decisions, Khan said, "To me, it was like I got to get the most competent guys -- general manager, head coach. Then I want to empower them and give them the resources. This is the NFL. You've got to hold them accountable. I don't think it is right for me to go out and say -- forget about a specific player -- which of the 3000 players in the league they ought to have and not have. So it's for them to decide.''

The Jacksonville Jaguars might have done a lot of good work rebuilding their secondary during the draft, but their work isn't done yet. John Oesher of Jaguars.com reports that veteran cornerback Marcus Trufant is visiting the team Tuesday.

This late in free agency, a free agent visit is only going to take place if the team is serious about making a move. Trufant played under Jaguars coach Gus Bradley for the last three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Trufant was drafted 11th overall by the Seahawks back in 2003.

Jaguars Fans Start Petition To Bring Free Agent QB Tim Tebow To Jacksonville

To be filed under the "Are you serious?" file, a group of Jacksonville Jaguars fans have started a petition to President Barack Obama to intervene on their behalf to urge Jags GM David Caldwell to stop ignoring fans' pleas and sign Tim Tebow, per ESPN.com.

It's understood from watching and listening to Obama that he is a big sports fan, but given things like the economy and the deficit here at home, plus all the fires abroad from Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and North Korea, just to name a few, the President should have plenty on his plate to keep him busy with more high priority matters.

Caldwell has already said the Jaguars would pass on signing Tebow, who grew up in Jacksonville and later became a star at the University of Florida, where he won the Heisman Trophy.

Tebow was released by the New York Jets shortly after the conclusion of the draft.

Jaguars Rookie Luke Joeckel Getting Comfortable At Right Tackle

The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Luke Joeckel No. 2 overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, and then did something you don't normally ask of No. 2 overall picks: They made him change positions.

With Eugene Monroe at left tackle, the Jaguars want Joeckel to get used to right tackle as a rookie. After three days of a rookie minicamp, it sounds like the transition is going well.

"It's feeling a lot better than I thought it would," Joeckel said, via the Florida Times-Union.

Monroe possibly is the Jaguars' best player, and they drafted another player at the same position. It seems likely that the Jaguars will let Monroe leave after 2013 in free agency, so Joeckel can move to the left side.

"I can go back there any time," Joeckel said. "That's really where my comfort zone is."

Jaguars Rookie QB Matt Scott In Walking Boot After First Practice

Jaguars rookie quarterback Matt Scott is in a walking boot and not practicing on the second day of rookie mini-camp. Scott, signed as an undrafted free agent, appeared to turn his ankle late in practice on Friday and is now in a walking boot and sitting out, likely in just a precautionary measure.

Scott was picked up by the Jaguars immediately following the draft, as he surprisingly went undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft. The Jaguars are going to have an open competition going forward at the quarterback position, and while it's highly unlikely that an undrafted free agent wins the job, Scott as a nice skill set for the NFL, especially with more and more teams running pistol and read-option concepts.

Jaguars Rookie FS Johnathan Cyprien Stands Out In Friday's Rookie Practice

Some have speculated that second-round pick Johnathan Cyprien may end up being the best defensive player for the Jaguars during his rookie season in 2013, and the safety got out to a strong start during his first ever practice with the team on Friday. Mark Long of the Associated Press described Cyprien as "a man among boys" on Friday, as the Jaguars coaches took the rookies through basic drills on a rainy afternoon.

"That's one guy that really showed up in my eyes," Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said of Cyprien. "Not only is he playing but we're watching if they can handle the tempo of practice and the style that we're asking, but he did a great job leading too. Some of the balls that he had to catch he caught on overthrows and stuff. I was very pleased with his start."

All but assured a starting spot in the secondary during the 2013 season, Cyprien is expected to fill the void left by Dawan Landry, after the Jaguars released the veteran safety earlier in the offseason. However, in Bradley's defense, Cyprien will likely play in a shallow role in the secondary, similar to the one performed by strong safety Kam Chancellor of the Seattle Seahawks.

On Friday, Cyprien was slotted in that role, but it looked a little different than what Jaguars fans can expect from the team come August and September.

"We just put a defense in today that allows both guys to be down so it was one defense per base and one defense in nickel and one pressure," Bradley said. "It was really, really basic what we did just to teach our base core principles. We felt like it'd give him an opportunity to learn the middle field principles, but we really think about him as being more of a down guy."

Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley Says He Trusts WR Justin Blackmon

Just like general manager Dave Caldwell did earlier this week, Jaguars coach Gus Bradley threw his support behind receiver Justin Blackmon in the wake of his four-game suspension levied by the NFL on Tuesday.

Blackmon was disciplined without pay for violating the NFL’s Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse; he entered the program because of his aggravated DUI arrest last year in Oklahoma.

“I told Justin I do trust him,” Bradley told the Times-Union Thursday at EverBank Field. “We both have to earn each other’s trust and I don’t want trust to be mistaken for being naïve.”

Bradley said he has had “six or seven conversations,” with Blackmon since the league alerted the team and player of the ban.

“He understands we’re disappointed in what took place,” Bradley said. “I really try to maintain my focus on making sure he has a clear vision of what we expect from him. We’ve had great conversations since this came out.”

Gene Frenette: Justin Blackmon's repeated incidents a cry for help

Bradley has spoken to several veterans and his coaching staff about how he will proceed.

“I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to demonstrate to the team how we’re going to handle situations like this,” he said. “What I talked to our staff and our team about — we’re going to be consistent in our dealings and the message will be similar in how we handle it even though the tone may be different.”

Denard Robinson Shines During Jaguars Rookie Minicamp

Former Michigan star Denard Robinson made his debut with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday, showing off his speed and versatility as the team opened a three-day rookie minicamp.

A fifth-round pick making the transition from quarterback to running back, Robinson took the majority of repetitions with the first-team offense and even upstaged first-rounder Luke Joeckel. With maize-and-blue clad fans cheering his every move in a pouring rain, Robinson lined up in the backfield and at receiver during the two-hour practice and broke several long runs while also catching all but one pass thrown his way.

"It was a good start for him, although we don't talk much about the start," coach Gus Bradley said. "We're more concerned about how we finish, but it was good. One of our philosophies on offense is trying to get (the ball) in playmakers' hands. ... That's why you saw him play some multiple positions just to see what he can do, what he can take on and give him a little bit of a flavor."

Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch was excited about the addition.

"It's kind of fun just to get a feel for what he can do," Fisch said. "I know he's certainly a weapon from looking at all his college film. Now, it's a matter of what can he do best for us. We're looking forward to being able to move around to a lot of other spots as well."

With injured starter Maurice Jones-Drew still unable to practice following foot surgery, Robinson will get plenty of reps returns to practice in two weeks,.

The NFL has suspended Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon for the first four games of the 2013 season, ESPN was first to report. Blackmon was in violation of the league's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Blackmon has had two arrests for driving under the influence in his past, just last early June, less than two months after being drafted into the league by Jacksonville, the Oklahoma State product faced a DUI back near his old college campus in Stillwater, Okla. In '10, Blackmon, while still playing for OSU, was arrested for DUI and drew a one-game suspension from his then Cowboys coaching staff.

Blackmon was the Jaguars' first-round pick (No. 5 overall) in '12. As it stands, without appeal, he will miss all of September, his team's games against Kansas City, Oakland, Seattle and AFC South rival Indianapolis, per the NFL Network, he would be reinstated to play again on Monday, Sept. 30 to play at St. Louis in Week 5.
