Bears Have Doubts That RB Matt Forte’s Knees Will Hold Up

A source for the Chicago Tribune is saying that with more than 1,200 touches under his belt in the NFL, the Chicago Bears wonder how long running back Matt Forte’s knees will hold up. Forte has history with both knees. He tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in November 2006 at Tulane and that injury, combined with 833 carries in college primarily on artificial surfaces, caused a handful of teams to note worries over the length of his NFL career. He suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in the same knee in 2009, his second year, and had postseason arthroscopic surgery. In the midst of his best season last year, Forte missed the Bears' final four games after suffering an MCL sprain in his right knee.

New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott is the latest player to come forward to say that even though football has been good to him, he doesn’t think it’s worth the risk of injury for his son. “I don’t want my son to play football,” Scott told the Daily News. “I play football so he won’t have to. With what is going on, I don’t know if it’s really worth it.” “I don’t want to have to deal with him getting a concussion and what it would be like later in life,” he said. Scott also says he is concerned about the impact football has had on his life and plans to get evaluated when his career is over.

Former NFL WR Brown Reggie Rucker Says Concussions Were Funny Then, Not Now

Former NFL wide receiver Reggie Rucker played in the NFL from 1970 to 1981, and he says back then, the culture of the league as it related to head injuries was to treat the whole thing as a joke. Rucker recalled that players routinely returned to games after suffering hits serious enough to cause memory loss, and that players thought it was funny when they’d watch film of a game they couldn’t remember playing in. “I remember when I was in Oakland and got knocked out by Jack Tatum,” Rucker said. “I remember [trainers] asking, ‘Do you know where you are?’ I said, ‘Oakland, California.’ You sat down for a while, and then you went back in. You’ve been programmed all your life as a professional athlete, particularly in my era, that you could not give in. You had to show your bravado. The next day, when you went back to review the game on film, I’m sitting there and watching something I couldn’t remember. You’re laughing and joking and it’s funny then. It’s not funny now.”

It seems as though things are going fairly well in Adrian Peterson's recovery from left knee surgery. At Minnesota's Winter Park facility for the start of this year's offseason team activities in late April, Peterson noticed that his teammates weren't running that hard. So Peterson challenged those same teammates to a footrace and won easily. "He was off to the side working with our trainer, Eric Sugarman, and he looked out and saw the guys doing their wind sprints," head coach Leslie Frazier said. "He says, 'You know, I don't think they're running hard enough.' Eric allowed him to go out and run with them, and he passed them four different times. He finished in first four different times."

Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno Fighting For A Roster Spot

Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno is reportedly "fighting for a roster spot," according to Lindsay Jones of The Denver Post. Appearing Friday on ESPN, Jones reported that Moreno was a participant at the team's organized team activities and struggling to stand out in a crowded backfield. Willis McGahee remains the starter and Lance Ball was productive last season so Moreno’s role could be reduced to passing situations, but John Elway was thrilled about the addition of rookie Ronnie Hillman. Meanwhile, backs rebounding from an ACL tear tend to decline and it doesn't help that Moreno was nabbed for a DUI in February. Following a promising rookie campaign (947 rushing yards, nine total touchdowns), Moreno has missed 12 games in two seasons.

September was not a kind month for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2011. In the season opener on Sept. 11, star safety Eric Berry tore his ACL and was lost for the season and then a week later All-Pro running back Jamaal Charles suffered the same devastating injury in Detroit. Now the goal is to have both players ready by this September. In the case of Charles, the Chiefs have “no concerns whatsoever” about the running back's availability for Week 1, according to ESPN's Chris Mortenson (via PFT). Charles' absence from Kansas City's OTA sessions is purely a precautionary measure and he is expected to be ready to go by training camp.

Hakeem Nicks yesterday underwent successful surgery on his right foot, as a screw was inserted to hasten the healing process in the fifth metatarsal bone he fractured while running a route on Thursday during an OTA drill. The surgery was performed in Charlotte, N.C, by foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson. The Giants have set a 12-week timetable for Nicks’ return. Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted “One person familiar with the Nicks fractured foot said it was more like a ‘4 to 6 week’ injury.’’ Nicks’ agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Post, “we will know more next week,’’ regarding the earliest Nicks can be expected to return.

Kansas City Chiefs guard Jeff Allen did not participate in Thursday's organized team activities and was seen in a walking boot. Coach Romeo Crennel said Allen has an ankle injury. The presence of the boot usually means a high ankle sprain, and such an injury could mean Allen is finished for the off season practices. The Chiefs are counting on Allen to be their first guard off the bench, and he is probably an eventual successor to starter Ryan Lilja at left guard.

Chiefs Plan To Sit RB Jamaal Charles Until Training Camp

The Kansas City Chiefs are taking no chances when it comes to running back Jamaal Charles and his surgically repaired knee. Charles has yet to take part in any of the team’s OTA practices and will most likely will not be joining them until training camp. Head coach Romeo Crennel said he didn’t believe he would be cleared by doctors to play before off-season practice concludes. “We’re going to do everything we can to get them as healthy as they can get before we put them back out there,”. “If they continue to make progress, they should be cleared by camp time.” This is obviously the right move, as they’re counting on him to put together a solid 2012 season. The Chiefs have added Peyton Hillis to their backfield along with rookie Cyrus Grey, so they have some options if he gets hurt, none that you’d feel comfortable using as a featured back.

New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot while running a route during a Thursday morning OTA session, the club announced. According to the release, Nicks will undergo surgery with Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday where a screw will be inserted into the broken bone. Nicks faces an expected recovery time of 12 weeks, which means he will miss most, if not all of the team's 2012 training camp, which is scheduled to begin at the University of Albany on July 26.

Bears WR Johnny Knox Could Miss 2012 Season

Wide receiver Johnny Knox was in good spirits Wednesday at the Bears’ offseason practice at Halas Hall but still a long way from participating in practice and an even longer way from playing in a game. Still rehabilitating from surgery to stabilize a vertebra in his back after suffering a horrific injury Dec. 18 against the Seattle Seahawks, a clearly underweight Knox acknowledged the possibility that he might miss part or all of the 2012 season. ‘‘It could happen, but I’m staying optimistic,’’ said Knox, who was second in the NFL with 19.6 yards per catch last season, when he had 37 receptions for a team-leading 727 yards and two touchdowns. ‘‘My main focus is in the weight room. I’m not in a rush. This is my spine, the core of my body I’m dealing with. It’s not my knee, ankle or shoulder. I’m taking my time.’’ Knox said he lost 30 pounds after the surgery but has regained 10 in rehab, which would put him at about 165 pounds on his 6-foot frame. He said he’s jogging but not running routes, and he’s doing light weightlifting to build up muscle. But there’s no timetable for his return. ‘‘I’m doing great; I’m feeling a lot better from Day 1,’’ he said. ‘‘Getting stronger. Working on some things to get stronger in my lower body and my back. Most importantly, mentally, too.’’

The Panthers are taking precautions with their two recovering linebackers. Middle backer Jon Beason, who had Achilles surgery after Week 1 last season, said he learned Monday that he would not be involved in any of the team drills during OTAs according to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer. Beason, who said his Achilles feels “great,” was disappointed initially but understands the team's thinking. “I think they're just protecting me from myself,” Beason said. “Practice is practice. But to me you come out and compete. You try to win every down and you play the game a certain way. I think that had a lot to do with it, too.” Beason was at middle linebacker for the installation period, with first-round pick Luke Kuechly flanking him at weakside. But after that, Beason kneeled on the sideline and watched.

Soreness In Rams QB Sam Bradford's Ankle Still Lingers

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is a man coming off of a serious ankle injury and trying to learn his third NFL offense in three seasons according to Kathleen Nelson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. After five days of OTAs, head football coach Jeff Fisher estimated that he had installed approximately 70 percent of the offense, helping Bradford is the fact that the offense is similar to the one Pat Shurmur ran during Bradford's rookie year and the presence of a quarterbacks coach. Last year's offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels preferred to serve as his own quarterback coach but Bradford really appreciates the presence of coach Frank Cignetti, most recently the offensive coordinator at Rutgers. "Coach Cig has been awesome," Bradford said. "He really knows what he's doing when it comes to coaching quarterbacks. He's all over fundamentals. Every day he points something out on tape, whether it be my drop, my arm angle, something like that. Whereas last year, not having that, I feel like I probably missed some things and probably got a little lazy. Having him here keeps me very sharp with all the little things, which is very nice." The one carryover from last year that Bradford hopes to jettison for good is the residue from a badly sprained ankle, originally suffered Oct. 16 against Green Bay, he missed six games and finished rehab in March, but soreness lingers. He's practicing fully in OTAs, but it's got to be concerning that the ankle woes have lasted so long. Bradford re-injured the ankle on several occasions last season, and he's not fully over the injury more than seven months later. "It's getting there," Bradford insisted. "It seems to feel better every week. There's less soreness, more things I can do. I think it's definitely on the right track."

Bengals RB Rodney Stewart Tears ACL In OTA's

There appear to be multiple reports suggesting that Bengals running back Rodney Stewart, who signed with the Bengals as an un-drafted free agent, tore his ACL early during Tuesday's OTA session. The reports are initially sourced from Buffzone.com, writing that: Fifteen minutes into his first practice of rookie mini camp with the Cincinnati Bengals, Stewart fell to the ground during a non-contact blocking drill According to the website Stewart will "undergo surgery on June 6", performed by Ohio State team physician Chris Kaeding, and will likely find himself on the team's Injured Reserve list once the season starts. However we'd expect the team to waive him with an injury settlement first before resigning him to IR. According to Ralphie Report, an SB Nation site that covers the Colorado Buffaloes, this is the second time that Stewart has suffered this type of injury; the first during high school.

Ravens LB Sergio Kindle Hoping For A Chance To Play In 2012

After recovering from a fractured skull two summers ago, Ravens outside linebacker Sergio Kindle is hoping to earn some playing time in 2012. Kindle is still coping with hearing loss in his left ear following a fall down a flight of stairs in 2010. This has made it tough for him to hear calls, and he's yet to deal with crowd noise. Kindle conceded 2012 could be a "make or break year."
