The Detroit Lions have traded two late-round draft picks to acquire cornerback Chris Houston from the Atlanta Falcons. Houston, a second-round pick for Atlanta in 2007, became expendable after the Falcons signed Dunta Robinson as an unrestricted free agent. The Falcons will receive an additional sixth-round pick from Detroit and move up from the 18th spot to second in the fifth round.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports via twitter that the Falcons have signed cornerback Dunta Robinson to a six-year, $57 Million contract that includes $25.5 Million in guarantees. The Falcons, who ranked 28th in pass defense in 2009, targeted Robinson awhile ago and seized the opportunity to nab the best cornerback in free agency. Atlanta's smallish corners were targeted last season and Robinson adds size and better coverage ability than any defensive back on the roster.

As a full-time starter in his prime, Dunta Robinson is considered the top cornerback on the free-agent market and he might not be available long. NFL.com senior writer Steve Wyche said on NFL Total Access on Thursday that “all indications from people I’ve spoken to is that he will end up with the Atlanta Falcons.” It makes sense — the Falcons are thin at cornerback, where they’ve already brought back veteran Brian Williams, who was signed off the street last season and became the starter before a season-ending knee injury. “Apparently, a lot of people in that front office have been high on Dunta Robinson for years, hoping he would be free,” Wyche said.

The Atlanta Falcons have re-signed cornerback Brian Williams to a one-year contract but that doesn’t mean the team will not be in pursuit of Dunta Robinson when free agency kicks off tonight. Williams was picked up after the Jacksonville Jaguars released him in final cuts, and he quickly became a starter in the secondary for the Falcons, who have had a revolving door of sorts the last few seasons. He started five games before suffering a torn ACL in a victory over the Chicago Bears on Oct. 20, the plan is for him to be ready at the start of training camp.

The Falcons offered a second-round tender to punter Michael Koenen, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Koenen was franchised last year, so he'll get a ten percent raise on his $2.483 million salary from 2009. Seems like a lot for a punter.

Falcons Place First Round Tender On OG Harvey Dahl

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Falcons offered offensive guard Harvey Dahl a first-round tender. Dahl is an elite run blocker, but dealt with an Achilles injury last season that led to some ineffectiveness down the stretch. Assuming he's fully healthy in 2010, he should provide elite protection for running back Michael Turner.

Falcons Unlikely To Pursue Panthers DE Julius Peppers

The indicators are pointing toward the Falcons not getting involved in the Julius Peppers derby. The buzz words that keep coming from general manager Thomas Dimitroff are “fiscally responsible” moves. Charles Chandler of the Charlotte Observer noted that Peppers turned down a deal that would have paid him between $13 and $14 million last summer with the Panthers and a deal in a higher range doesn’t appear to fit the Falcons definition of “fiscally responsible.”

Falcons Offseason Prioroty Is Improving Their Pass Defense

The Falcons' top offseason priority is to improve the pass defense. "Statistically, we were not close to where we need to be or want to be," Smith said. "I think that's twofold. One, we address the pass rush and number two, is that we improve our secondary play. Those are areas that we definitely will want to address." However, Smith thought the postseason evaluations of cornerbacks Brent Grimes, Christopher Owens and Chris Houston were positive. "I'm pleased with our young corners," Smith said.
