HBO Plans To Have 'Hard Knocks' Team By June 1

HBO plans to have an NFL team in place for this year's edition of "Hard Knocks" by June 1, according to Michael Shain of the New York Post but thus far, finding a willing participant to appear in the popular program has been difficult. The Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins reportedly have either declined offers or informed HBO and NFL Films that they're not interested in opening their doors to camera crews. The New York Jets, who had a memorable run in the latest edition during 2010 training camp, haven't ruled out a return gig, though that seems unlikely considering how they're planning to keep the focus on football after a disappointing 8-8 season in 2011. The only team that has openly lobbied to appear is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Paranoia about letting camera crews into their facility is probably the driving force preventing the network and NFL Films finding a subject, but Shain reports that part of the struggle is the absence of NFL Films President Steve Sabol, who is battling brain cancer. "Without him going out to the teams twisting arms, it's been hard," a source tells Shain. "Nobody would say 'no' to Sabol."

Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha believes he could have worked with Asante Samuel on excelling as a part of the Philadelphia defense. Samuel was traded to the Falcons last month for a late-round draft pick. Asomugha signed with the Eagles before the 2011 season. The pair only played one season together. "I thought it could have worked, and I still think it could've worked," Asomugha said. "Everybody keeps saying that, you know, 'No, it can't work, you three, blah blah blah. ' I still thought it could've worked, even coming into this season. Asante and I would talk about it through the offseason, like, we can fix this. ... Now we've got another year under our belt; now we've got time; and then he's gone. So now it's like you don't get that chance to put it back out there. But, you know, it's whatever, and he's happy with where he is."

Head Coach Mike Smith Admits Falcons Need To Change Playoff Approach

Mike Smith has coached the Falcons four years and the team has made the playoffs in three of the four years but has no playoff wins. It is a trend that troubles Smith and one he wants to correct. “Well obviously we have to do it different than what we’ve done in the past, Smith told 790 the Zone according to Sportsradiointerviews. We’ve been there, we just haven’t been very successful. So it starts with me in evaluating how I prepare our football team, or we as a coaching staff prepare our football team. And believe me, we’ve done some soul searching. When you go to the places that we’ve been and not have the success that you want in those situations, it’s tough. And I know everybody’s disappointed, but nobody’s more disappointed than I am — I can assure you that.”

Falcons Sign C Peter Konz To Four-Year Deal

The Atlanta Falcons have signed second-round draft pick center Peter Konz. He was projected to be selected in the first round of the draft but was picked by the Falcons with the 55th overall pick. Konz spent most of the three-day rookie minicamp at right guard and received some snaps at center. “I thought Peter did a nice job,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said after the first practice. “Of course, Peter is being cross-trained at two positions. It’s obvious that he’s a big strong guy.” Konz is expected to compete for the starting right guard position against several veterans. However, he hasn’t played guard on a regular basis since high school. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Falcons tackle Lamar Holmes, the team’s third-round draft pick, will not participate in the team’s rookie minicamp because of a left foot injury. “Lamar has got a minor issue with his foot,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said after practice on Friday. ”It’s more precautionary right now. We’ll try to get him back out there. It won’t be here in this minicamp. It will be closer to when we start our OTAs at the end of the month. It’s something that became evident in his post-draft physical.”

According to an NFL source, the Bears will bring in defensive tackle Trey Lewis for a workout in the next few days. Lewis, 6-foot-3, 312 pounds, has not played in an NFL game since the 2010 season opener. The Falcons made him one of their final cuts last September and he was out of the league during the 2011 season. Lewis twice has been sidelined with a torn ACL, an injury he suffered in Week 11 of 2007 after he had worked his way into the starting lineup as a rookie in the first month of the season. Lewis then tore the ACL again while recovering. He appeared in 18 games for the Falcons, making seven starts.

One day after the tragic death of former LB Junior Seau, more than 100 former NFL players joined another concussion lawsuit against the league. According to CNN, former Falcons players Jamal Anderson, Chris Doleman and O.J. Santiago joined more than 1,500 players suing the NFL for concealing the dangers of concussions. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta by attorney Mike McGlamry. It states that the NFL, “repeatedly refuted the connection between concussions and brain injury” and failed to “take reasonable steps necessary to protect players from devastating head injuries. Moreover, the NFL has downplayed and misrepresented the issues and misled players concerning the risks associated with concussions.”

Falcons Capture Cap Credit For QB Michael Vick

No one can say how much money Michael Vick repaid the Atlanta Falcons as part of the signing bonus he forfeited when he was convicted on federal dogfighting charges after he had signed a $130 million, 10-year contract. But the Falcons have received a $3 million salary-cap credit from the NFL, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Per the report, the Falcons began pursuing credits after Vick signed a $100 million, six-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Falcons stayed after it and they were reportedly awarded with the credit just before the current league year began in March. The contract Vick received from the Eagles put him in position to satisfy his creditors and the Falcons were one of those.

Tweaked Duties Could Suit Falcons CB Dunta Robinson

CB Dunta Robinson has started all but one game in his two seasons with the Falcons, but has not performed up to the lofty expectations that were placed on him after signing a six-year, $57 million contract before the 2010 season. He agreed to restructure his deal this offseason to give the Falcons some salary-cap relief, and his role on defense also will be tweaked. Following the team’s acquisition of CB Asante Samuel, Robinson is still a starter, but Pro Football Weekly is hearing it will be Robinson who moves inside to play in the slot when Atlanta uses its nickel package with Samuel and CB Brent Grimes, who is back in the fold after signing his franchise tender prior to the draft, playing outside. Robinson doesn’t have great size, but he does like playing an aggressive, physical style of football and has the right mentality to match up inside. He’s never loved sitting back and playing zone and likely will be given the freedom to press at the line.

Falcons Planning Open Competition On Offensive Line

The Atlanta Falcons used their first two picks in the 2012 NFL Draft to address an offensive line that ranked 27th in Football Outsiders' "Adjusted Line Yards" in 2011 -- after ranking in the Top 10 in each of the first three seasons of the Thomas Dimitroff/Mike Smith Era -- and was ineffective in short yardage situations in a playoff loss to the New York Giants. Atlanta chose 6-foot-5, 313-pound Wisconsin center Peter Konz is round two and, later that night, selected 6-foot-5, 323-pound Southern Miss offensive tackle Lamar Holmes. Both will get a chance to play early as Smith intends to have an open competition along the offensive line, reports D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We’re going to have an open competition," Smith said. "I think competition brings out the best in everyone. These two (offensive linemen) that we added, we’re going to put them right in the mix. We are going to have a very competitive off-season, and it will start with the rookie mini-camp in two weeks." The only position that appears to be set in stone along the Falcons offensive line is Justin Blalock at left guard. Blalock is entering the second year of his six-year, $38.4 million contract that was restructured last week so the team could add Asante Samuel to the roster.

Falcons Select South Carolina DT Travian Robertson (Rd.7, No. 249)

With the 249th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Falcons select Travian Robertson, DT (South Carolina). Robertson is a big man who shows good effort in the trenches. He has experience against good offensive lines in the SEC. He is stiff at times and almost overdeveloped, as his muscle can inhibit his movements. He has a difficult time reacting to plays and needs a scheme where he can rely on his size and strength to hold linemen away from the second level. He won't contribute much in the pass game, but he is a big man who has good technique.

Falcons Select Mississippi St. SS Charles Mitchell (Rd.6, No.192)

With the 192nd overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Falcons select Charles Mitchell, SS (Mississippi State). Mitchell is an experienced corner who stands out as a smart and reliable player on the back end. He started for three years and is a smooth athlete who would look natural as a spot starter in the NFL. He is a bit short but understands how to play the position. He is a controlled athlete, can trigger his feet to turn and get to a spot and has the body control to make a play on the ball or dip his hips to make a play against the run.

With the 164th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Falcons select Jonathan Massaquoi, OLB (Troy). Massaquoi has very long arms, which are a major source of intrigue to NFL talent evaluators. Massaquoi would benefit from staying at end where he can use his arms in tight quarters to keep an advantage on offensive tackles. If he is moved to linebacker, Massaquoi has shown the ability to cover in short areas and fly out to cover the flats and running backs out of the backfield. Massaquoui is a stiff, elongated defender who struggles to move fluidly in space. Off the snap, he doesn’t have the innate burst or speed to get outside of offensive tackles using a speed rush.
