The 2012 Pro Football Hall of Fame class was announced Saturday night, and it was nearly as notable for who wasn't elected than who was. DB Jack Butler, C Dermontti Dawson, DE Chris Doleman, DT Cortez Kennedy, RB Curtis Martin and T Willie Roaf were all selected for enshrinement this summer in Canton, Ohio. Among those who will have to wait at least another year are Head Coach Bill Parcells, RB Jerome Bettis, WR Cris Carter, WR Andre Reed and DE/OLB Charles Haley.

The Falcons have been in touch with former Miami linebacker Channing Crowder, who plans to make a comeback after sitting out last season according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Crowder, the former North Springs High and Florida standout who prematurely retired at age 28, is ready to make a comeback. The Atlanta Falcons, who hired Crowder’s last defensive coordinator in Mike Nolan, have been in touch and will most certainly check out Crowder. “I’d love to play in Atlanta,” Crowder said. “Coach Nolan is my guy. Actually, when he got the job in Atlanta he [sent] me a text. Coach Nolan is a first class guy. I’m not just saying that to be politically correct. He’s a first class guy and a great defensive coordinator. He’s a great guy. When he I got released he texted me back then and said that ‘it was great to coach you.’” In his most recent text to Crowder, Nolan just told Crowder that he was landing in his hometown. “I told him if he needs a better linebacker let me know,” Crowder said. “He texted me back and said ‘I’ll keep in touch.’ ”

Retractable Roof Not Ruled Out For Falcons Stadium

The Atlanta Falcons' desired open-air stadium might wind up with a retractable roof if ongoing negotiations get bogged down according to Tim Tucker and Leon Stafford of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. While both the Falcons and the Georgia World Congress Center Authority say the focus remains on trying to reach a deal that would put the team in an outdoor stadium and preserve the nearby Georgia Dome for indoor events, neither side shuts the door on the option of an indoor/outdoor, retractable-roof facility. That option would be much more expensive, could make the Dome unneeded and would represent a change in stance for the Falcons, who have expressed a preference for an open-air stadium without the added cost of a retractable roof. A Georgia legislator briefed on the negotiations between the GWCC Authority, which oversees the state-owned complex that includes the Georgia Dome, and the Falcons told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution this week that a new stadium with a retractable roof and a natural grass playing surface is among the options being considered. Another person familiar with the negotiations said a retractable roof could be pursued if it is determined that two stadiums –- the Dome plus a new open-air facility –- on GWCC property are not financially or logistically viable, asked for the Falcons' current position, team president Rich McKay said in an email: "A retractable roof stadium has always been one of the options, but our first preference has been to focus on an open-air stadium."

Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez Says 2012 Will Be His Last Season

Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez announced on an ESPN/Facebook chat that 2012 would be the final season in the future Hall of Famer's career. Gonzalez, who has made similar declarations in previous off-seasons, was asked how much longer he intends to play, and this was his answer via Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "One year. I said that last year though, and the year before. But I really do believe this is it. First of all, this is the first time my wife came to me and said, ‘You’re only going to play one more year, right?'". The 12-time Pro Bowler turns 36 later this month. Prior to the end of the 2011 season, Gonzalez signed a one-year, $6.9 million extension for the 2012 season.

Falcons Facing Major Questions Along Their O-Line This Offseason

The offensive line will once again command the attention of the Falcons' decision makers this offseason. Re-signing OG Justin Blalock and ORT Tyson Clabo last offseason didn't prevent some serious issues from befalling the unit as inconsistency in pass protection and struggles to get a push at the line of scrimmage in short-yardage situations were a couple of the team's more maddening problems. This year, the only starting O-lineman due to hit the open market is longtime C Todd McClure, who wants to continue his career, but there are question marks at left tackle, and the ORG situation will be impacted by whatever happens with McClure, as Joe Hawley could slide from right guard to center if McClure does not return. OLTs Sam Baker and Will Svitek are both signed through next season, but neither is viewed as a long-term solution at the position. Also, there will be a new assistant coach responsible for the O-line, as Paul Boudreau was released earlier this month.

Shane Dronett, a former Falcons defensive tackle remembered for his hard-nosed playing style and his gentleness away from football, ended his life by gunshot Jan. 21, 2009, in his Duluth home. He was 38. An autopsy performed by Boston University neuropathologist Ann McKee, who is at the forefront of research of football-related brain injuries, said that Dronett’s brain tissue was “very supportive of the diagnosis of [chronic traumatic encephalopathy].” The CTE conclusion made sense of the often violent and erratic behavior Dronett demonstrated in the years leading to his death. Dronett was hard-hitting and tough, traits that enabled him to play 10 seasons in the NFL, the last six with the Falcons.

Eleven months ago, the Georgia World Congress Center Authority and the Atlanta Falcons agreed to enter negotiations about a potential new open-air football stadium downtown. They're still negotiating, both parties say. A possible sign of movement came earlier this month, when Gov. Nathan Deal included money in his 2012 budget to purchase property next to the proposed stadium site. The GWCC Authority, which oversees the state-owned complex that includes the Georgia Dome, voted last February to negotiate with the Falcons toward a possible memorandum of understanding on a $700 million stadium that would be built about a half-mile north of the Dome. "We continue to meet with the Falcons on a whole array of business terms and items attendant to that," GWCC Authority executive director Frank Poe said in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution this week. "We have tried to quantify the issues that each side would have and talk through a series of items that are important for both sides, but nothing has been resolved in the form of an agreement."

Falcons Considering Parting With RB Michael Turner?

The Falcons have leaned heavily on Michael Turner since they signed him before the 2008 season — he's the only back in the league to exceed 300 carries in three of the past four seasons — and he's been one of the team's more consistent and productive players. Turner was bothered by a groin injury for much of last season and seemed to wear down late in the year, but he still finished third in the league in rushing (1,340 yards). He gained only 41 yards on 15 carries in Atlanta's playoff loss to the Giants, though, and didn't get the ball in 4th-and-short situations tailor-made for a Turner run up the gut. With Turner just a few weeks away from turning 30, the team has never appeared less confident in him. He's signed through the 2013 season and is due to make $5 million in 2012, but some league observers are suggesting the Falcons may consider parting ways with him this offseason.

Mike Nolan Says Falcons Will Stay With 4-3 Defense

Mike Nolan is not going to change the Falcons’ 4-3 defensive scheme. The Falcons have built toward that scheme in the draft and free agency, and Nolan considers it a “solid foundation.” Nolan has been known to use a 3-4 defense, but said Wednesday that his 14 seasons as an NFL coordinator have been equally split between the two schemes. “We are not trying to move this toward a 3-4,” Nolan said in a conference call. “I will flat say that.” Nolan said he could use some 3-4 alignments, as he has in the past. He also said he was not told by coach Mike Smith that the team would work from the 4-3 scheme during his interview. “I do believe that the vision for them and the target they’ve been hitting is one we want to stay consistent with it and go forward in that respect,” he said. “If I felt like it could easily be tweaked to get to something else because I felt it could be better, I would obviously suggest it. But I think the track they’ve been on is a good one. 4-3 or 3-4 is very relevant as long as you are doing what your players allow you to do.”

Falcons Release Offensive Line Coach Paul Boudreau

The Atlanta Falcons just sent out a very short release announcing offensive line coach Paul Boudreau is leaving the team. “We would like to thank Coach Boudreau for his contributions to our team over the past four seasons, and we wish him well in his future endeavors,” coach Mike Smith said. Consider Boudreau another scapegoat for a team that went 10-6 in the regular season, after going 13-3 last year, and got bounced in the first round of the playoffs. Boudreau joined the Atlanta Falcons coaching staff as offensive line coach in 2008 and spent four seasons with the team.

Falcons Will Allow CB Brent Grimes To Leave Via Free Agency

Dan Parr of Pro Football Weekly reports that a team source believes that the Atlanta Falcons will allow free agent CB Brent Grimes to sign with another team during free agency. Grimes is seen as the Falcons top cornerback but unfortunately underwent knee surgery back in November and four of the teams final five games as well as the last weeks playoff game against the New York Giants. Atlanta feels that their combination of Dominique Franks and Chris Owens will allow them to deal with the loss of Grimes. Obviously they could consider adding a more affordable option at some point during free agency and possibly the draft.

Falcons Interested In Steve Spagnuolo, Mike Nolan

The Falcons are reportedly interested in Steve Spagnuolo, the recently fired Rams coach, and Mike Nolan, the former 49ers head coach who also served as a defensive coordinator with the Ravens, Broncos and most recently the Dolphins. “Moving forward, this defense needs to continue its growth and evolution as a passionate and fiery defense, one that is going to fly to the football, disrupt, be opportunistic and capitalized on opportunities to turn the game around; flip the game in critical situations,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff said according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's D. Orlando Ledbetter. “We’ll look for a coordinator who will [aid] Coach Smith and his approach to putting that type of aggressive defense on the field.” Spagnuolo may have been mostly unimpressive during his three years in St. Louis, but he was the architect behind the Giants' defensive game plan to stop the Patriots' explosive offense in Super Bowl XLII. Ledbetter adds that "Nolan is considered a 3-4 coach. But [Falcons head coach Mike] Smith’s respect him from their days together in Baltimore runs deep. They could likely mold the principles of Nolan’s 3-4 with Smith’s 4-3 if necessary."

Falcons Owner Arthur Blank Is Demanding A Super Bowl Title For Atlanta

The Falcons are entering into a new phase under general manager Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith. Let’s just call it the “Makeover, Part Two.” Since arriving in 2008, the two have worked together to turnaround the fortunes of the franchise trying to rebound from the Michael Vick era and Bobby Petrino leaving them at the altar. They have enjoyed unprecedented success, but Falcons owner Arthur Blank, pointing to three losses in the playoffs, is demanding more. “Our goal is to win rings, to get championships and eventually win a Super Bowl for this community,” Blank said Wednesday at a news conference in Buckhead. “That’s our goal.” Dimitroff and Smith have crafted four consecutive winning seasons and three trips to the playoffs, while breaking in a quarterback in Phase 1 of the Falcons’ makeover. Now, the challenge, as Matt Ryan continues to grow, is to push the team to elite status in the NFL and bring the Vince Lombardi trophy to Atlanta for the first time. “We know that we need to get better in many, many areas,” Dimitroff said. “It is my job to make sure that I step back with Coach Smith and obviously, Mr. Blank, and look at all aspects of the football operations and determine where we need to make changes and where we need to adjust going forward.”
