Eagles May Opt For WR Plaxico Burress Over WR DeSeanJackson

Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com sees some changes coming this offseason in the Philadelphia Eagles' receiving corps, while he believes the team will put the franchise tag on DeSean Jackson later this month, Caplan as well as NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora believes the Eagles will shop Jackson around the league. Caplan also predicts the Eagles will pursue free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress, it was no secret last year that Burress wanted to play for the Eagles as he left prison wearing a Philadelphia ball cap. The Jets won a bidding war, giving Plax over $3 million guaranteed, Caplan believes Burress could upgrade the team's red-zone offense, and points out that in-house supposed red-zone target Riley Cooper "doesn't fight for the football" enough to excel in that role. The Eagles likely would not be signing Plax as a starter, he'd be a third receiver and inside-the-20s guy.

NFL Network reports that the Eagles intend to franchise WR DeSean Jackson, but not necessarily keep him. By franchising Jackson, he can sign a one-year tender for a set salary for 2012, but the team could move him in a deal for what they deem fair compensation. If no one wants to trade for Jackson, the Eagles would then keep him and consider his one-year deal as a "prove it" type contract.

In a little over two weeks, DeSean Jackson will find out if the Eagles intend to franchise him on the first day they are able to do so. The wide receiver, who attended the NFL Honors Show on Saturday, said that he did not know where he stood with the Eagles. “It’s out of my hands,” Jackson told NBC10 during a brief red carpet interview. “So hopefully I am and I will look forward to that. I’m just anxious to see what’s going to happen.” Jackson’s four-year contract is up, but the Eagles have the option to place a one-year franchise tag on the 25-year-old beginning Feb. 20. Asked again Saturday if he would be OK with the tag, Jackson said, “I’m not talking about that right now. I’m here for the Super Bowl, man.” Indications, though, are that the Eagles and Jackson, who is represented by agent Drew Rosenhaus, are far apart in their estimation of his worth. “I have no clue,” Jackson said when he was asked if the two parties had bridge the gap. “I don’t know. Still don’t know.”

Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network mentioned that he believes the Philadelphia Eagles will use the franchise tag on WR DeSean Jackson. “He’s someone that you don’t just let walk,” said LaCanfora on NFL Network’s XLVI Live. “Whether he’s going to be there long-term remains to be seen, but you franchise him, then entertain trade possibilities.” Head coach Andy Reid said that he was impressed by the way Jackson performed during the final stretch of the season. Whether or not you agree with Reid statement regarding Jackson’s performance, it’s a good indication that he trying his best to make things work with him in Philadelphia.

Broncos SS Brian Dawkins To Retire As An Eagle?

Former Eagles safety Brian Dawkins said Thursday that he hasn't yet made a decision on whether he wants to play a 14th NFL season. The 38-year-old eight-time Pro Bowler, who will be a free agent in March, has played the last three seasons in Denver after leaving the Eagles as a free agent in 2009, missed four of the Broncos' last five games, including both of their playoff games, with a neck injury. "The season's not even over yet; The Super Bowl hasn't been played,'' said Dawkins. "I'll give it some prayer and we'll take it from there.'' Last summer, Dawkins agreed to restructure the contract he signed with the Broncos in '09. His 2011 salary was reduced from $6 million to $2 million. If Dawkins decides to retire, which is a good bet at this point given his age and the neck injury, there's a good chance the future Hall of Famer would sign a one-day contract with the Eagles so that he could officially retire with the club that selected him in the second round of the 1996 draft. "We'll see,'' he said. "I don't even want to think too deeply about that right now. If it happens, just let it be a surprise to everybody and it'll be a surprise for myself and we'll go from there.''

Patriots Likely To Use Franchise Tag On WR Wes Welker

Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network mentioned that the Patriots intend to use their franchise tag on WR Wes Welker if they’re unable to reach a long-term agreement with him before the March 5th deadline for franchise tags. “They’ve been trying all season to get a deal done,” said Lombardi, “but it hasn’t come to fruition yet. … They’re not going to lose Wes Welker. He’s going to be a part of their team.” The Patriots are believed to be willing to offer Welker a two or three year contract but he’s been holding out hope for a better deal. The tag will cost the Patriots $9.4 million which is a drop of almost $2 million since last season. Welker will be 31 at the start of the 2012 season and his ability is derived from his speed so it could be that the Patriots are reluctant to commit to a long-term deal because his production is susceptible to a decline in the coming years. That’s purely speculative but slot receivers must be fast enough to beat young cornerbacks and the recent market for wide receivers in their mid-to-late thirties hasn’t exactly been that great.

LeSean McCoy had a heck of a season in 2011, rushing for 1,309 yards and 17 touchdowns. It netted him the FedEx Ground Player of the Year on Wednesday at the Super Bowl. And it also landed him a trip to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. While there, McCoy was on the NFC team that Aaron Rodgers believes should be "embarrassed" by a lack of effort. Actually, he was "one of those guys" that didn't try, and said so himself on Wednesday. "Yeah? I'm one of those guys," McCoy said when asked about Rodgers comments. "You walk around every practice and the guys before the games on other teams are like 'take your time' because we're going on a very slow pace, very easy. And you get out there and you see guys half-doing it and you do the same thing."

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday for the first time since the regular-season finale on Jan. 1, Reid said he didn't specify a job title in his conversations with Spagnuolo, who was fired after going 10-38 in three seasons with the Rams. Spagnuolo previously worked under defensive coordinator Jim Johnson in Philadelphia, and was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants when they beat New England in Super Bowl XLII. He joined the Saints two weeks ago after defensive coordinator Gregg Williams left for the same position with the Rams. Reid also said he planned to retain defensive coordinator Juan Castillo all along. Castillo was heavily criticized in his first season at a new position after coaching the offensive line for 13 years.

Jackson, who will be a free agent this offseason, was inactive for a game reportedly because he skipped a team meeting. He also didn't put up big stats as he had previously.
Eagles QB Michael Vick To Work With Andy Reid On Cutting Down Turnovers

Speaking with the media Tuesday, Eagles head coach Andy Reid said that he's been in contact with QB Michael Vick and plans on working with him to cut down on his turnovers as well as improve his coordination with his receivers. He cited his success throwing to tight end Brent Celek as proof that Vick can improve and hopes he does dedicate himself to his craft this offseason. Reid added that he thinks Vick won't change his style of play but will be smarter about what he does when he runs with the football. "You look at the last four teams that are playing in the playoffs and all four quarterbacks didn't miss a start. So he's aware of that and he understands how important he is to this football team when he's healthy," Reid said. "... So you limit your contact points that he had. And I think that he was able to see that this year. Now does that mean that he's never going to run the ball again? No. I would tell you that I'm sure he's going to run the ball. But when you do that, is there a time to get out of bounds and a time to get down? Absolutely, so that you live to play the next play."

Eagles head coach Andy Reid said TE Brent Celek is off crutches and is "moving around pretty well" following surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip and a sports hernia. Celek finished second on Philadelphia with 62 receptions for 811 yards and five touchdowns. Celek should be fine for training camp and might even participate without issue in minicamps this spring.

Eagles, DeSean Jackson Drastically Differ On WR's Worth

Paul Domowitch of the Philadelphia Daily News writes that league sources have informed him that DeSean Jackson‘s “opinion of his worth continues to be night-and-day different from the Eagles.” Eagles’ owner Jeffery Lurie mentioned that they would be interested in keeping Jackson ”if the right terms develop” but Jackson’s asking price appears to be out of the Eagles price range at this point. DeSean has said that he’s open to being franchised but that move carries a $9.5 million price tag and Eagles could certainly use that money elsewhere. Jackson has proven to be a great weapon when properly motivated but the question marks that currently surround him will most likely limit the amount of money he’ll make during free agency.

Former Miami Dolphins assistant coach Todd Bowles has turned down an offer from the Oakland Raiders and has taken the Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach job, Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Bowles will be in charge of cornerbacks and that Juan Castillo will remain the team's defensive coordinator. An assistant head coach/secondary coach with the Dolphins, the 48-year-old Bowles became the interim head coach after the firing of Tony Sparano and led the Dolphins to a 2-1 record to finish the season. Bowles had been with the Dolphins since following Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano to South Florida from the Dallas Cowboys, where he had coached the secondary. Bowles has aspirations to be a head coach in the NFL and was a candidate for the Dolphins job as well as vacancies with the Raiders and St. Louis Rams.

In his first public comments since before the end of the season, Juan Castillo would not confirm if he was or wasn't still the Eagles' defensive coordinator according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "You got to go through Andy," Castillo said, deferring to Eagles coach Andy Reid. "I'm just working," he added, explaining his presence at Senior Bowl practices. Castillo is still a member of the Eagles, although it remains unclear what his role will be next season. Reid has not met with the media since immediately following the season finale against the Redskins on Jan. 1. The Eagles said that he would speak as soon as he was finished evaluating his coaching staff. His silence makes it seem as if Castillo is still dangling in the wind.

Marty Mornhinweg Interviews For Raiders’ Head Coaching Job

Marty Mornhinweg hasn’t been an NFL head coach in the last decade, but he may be back in the game now. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Eagles’ offensive coordinator interviewed with the Raiders yesterday for their head coaching vacancy. Mornhinweg traveled to Oakland for the interview and left without being hired. The 49-year-old journeyman coach is in the running for the position, but the Raiders have interviewed several other candidates including Dolphins interim head coach Todd Bowles. There was speculation that Mornhinweg would make a run at the opening in Indianapolis, but the Eagles have yet to receive a request from Mornhinweg for permission to talk to the Colts.
