Some Dolphins Defensive Players Are Unhappy About Switch To 4-3 Defense

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, some of the Dolphins' defensive players are upset are upset at the prospect of switching to a 4-3 defense as they feel their skills are more suited to a 3-4. The Dolphins would likely play Karlos Dansby as middle linebacker in the 4-3, although the team will prbably alternate the 4-3 and 3-4 as they did at times last year. If the Dolphins are serious about Peyton Manning, they will have to be judicious in their defensive free-agent signings or get creative in obtaining more cap space, it is unlikely they will franchise defensive lineman Paul Soliai, as that would take up all their cap space. Though they suggest they will make an effort to re-sign Kendall Langford, keeping him is iffy at best. They could re-allocate that money on a pass-rusher to play opposite Cameron Wake in a 4-3. Among 4-3 ends, the most skilled available would be Detroit’s Cliff Avril (11 sacks), Atlanta’s John Abraham (9.5 sacks), New England’s Andre Carter (10 sacks in 14 games) and the Colts’ Robert Mathis (9.5 sacks). Arizona and former UM standout Calais Campbell (eight sacks) is more of a 3-4 defensive end.

Peyton Manning is in the middle of a difficult breakup with the Indianapolis Colts, and it appears he's ready to run into the arms of another NFL team. An NFL source says Miami is on the short list of teams Manning would like to play for when/if the Colts release him to avoid paying a $28 million bonus, which is due on March 8. Manning and his wife own a condo on South Beach and a source said they'd love to relocate to South Florida if the fit is right. A second source confirmed Manning's interest in the Dolphins. Playing for the Dolphins would allow Manning to remain in the AFC, and the Colts are on Miami's schedule next season, which is an added bonus.

Brandon Marshall Would Relish Reunion With Bears QB Jay Cutler

A month after a Twitter exchange with the Bears’ starting quarterback, Miami Dolphins receiver Brandon Marshall reiterated his affection for Jay Cutler. Marshall is under contract through the 2014 season, but he was asked by the Sun-Times if reuniting with his former Denver Broncos teammate would appeal to him. “Maybe down the road, we may have some extra picks, and we may be able to trade for him,” Marshall said. “But we have a quarterback in place in Matt Moore. He did an amazing job [in the] second half of the season, and where we go from there we’ll see. But Jay is a special talent, and he’s a great friend.” Marshall said he and Cutler stay in touch. “We’re very good friends,” Marshall said. “Cutler, man, he’s an amazing guy. He’s probably got one of the biggest hearts. I played with Cutler at a time when I was very young and immature, and his guidance and leadership helped me not fall off the deep end. So Cutler is a very special person to me.”

Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross Infatuated With Landing QB Peyton Manning?

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins timetable could be tricky, with Peyton Manning expected to be released by March 8, Matt Flynn hitting the open market March 13, and the unknown variable of when Manning’s arm will be strong enough to throw as well as he did before his neck injury. If the Dolphins are led to believe by agent Tom Condon that they’re a serious contender for Manning when he's released – and that his arm should be strong enough by the start of the season – then they are expected to wait as long as necessary on Manning if he doesn't make a decision quickly. That's because owner Stephen Ross is infatuated with the idea of signing him. The Dolphins believe they have a realistic chance of luring Manning, who owns a condo in South Beach and has an affinity for South Florida.

Dolphins rookie RB Daniel Thomas battled injuries and didn't show a whole lot in his first season, but the club is still behind the player it traded up to draft in 2011. "Daniel is going to be a fine player. I believe in him," GM Jeff Ireland said at the Senior Bowl. "He's tough, he's strong, he learned the pass protections really quick. He's got to keep his feet in the ground when he's making contact." The Dolphins were 11th in the league in rushing, thanks to a breakout campaign by Reggie Bush, but Pro Football Weekly hears they still might draft another back to add depth to the unit. Short-yardage back Lex Hilliard is a restricted free agent.

Ex-Dolphins LB Channing Crowder Rips GM Jeff Ireland, Says He Has 'No Class'

Channing Crowder is ready to return to football after a one-season sabbatical, but he made it clear to me Wednesday he’s not interested in a reunion with his former team. Crowder, 28, abruptly retired in August, 10 days after being cut by the Dolphins. He said then it was because his heart wasn’t in the game anymore, but he said Wednesday on Radio Row that his wife being 37 weeks pregnant at the time of his release played the biggest role in his decision to step away from the game. Asked if there was interest in returning to the Dolphins to play under linebackers coach George Edwards — who returned to Miami on Monday after a two-year stint as defensive coordinator in Buffalo — Crowder delivered his harshest criticism yet of Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland. “I wouldn’t go on a team with Jeff Ireland. I’m not very confident in him,” said Crowder. “He doesn’t know what he’s doing in my opinion. He’s real disrespectful, he doesn’t know how to deal with people and the whole Dez Bryant (situation) kind of showed to the world what he’s about, but guys in the building know what he’s really about.” In case you forgot, Ireland asked Bryant during a pre-draft interview if his mother once was a prostitute. “He’s not a good person,” Crowder added. “He has no class, and I wouldn’t choose to go back and play there. And I would have to say it’s the only team I don’t want to play for.”

Turner had served as Texas A&M's offensive line coach the past four years under Mike Sherman, then the Aggies' head coach and now the Dolphins' offensive coordinator. Turner then took the same position at Texas Tech last month before leaving for the Dolphins this week. The Aggies allowed just eight sacks in the 2011 season, fewest among Football Bowl Subdivision teams. He replaces Dave DeGuglielmo, who followed former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano to the Jets.

Brandon Marshall, fresh off a Pro Bowl MVP performance with six catches for 176 yards and four touchdowns, liked the quarterbacks who threw him the football in Honolulu. He liked them so much, he wants one like that for his very own with the Dolphins. Marshall caught a TD each from Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers and two more from Bengals rookie Andy Dalton in the all-star game. And while none of those guys will be available this off-season the Dolphins to acquire, Marshall wants someone of that ilk in Miami, says the Miami Herald. "Down in Miami, getting a feel for different quarterbacks, had three or four of them,” Marshall said. “Quarterbacks make it easier for me. You have these elite quarterbacks and it’s all on them. They put [the ball] in the right spot to make it easy for me to make the catch. It’s all the quarterbacks.” Marshall didn't want to belittle his current guy, Matt Moore, but there have been reports that he has reached out to soon-to-be free agent Matt Flynn, and the Dolphins could get into the Peyton Manning sweepstakes if and when the Colts release him. "Obviously, [Matt Moore] had a great year. You don't want to take anything away from Matt, but I think we really need to bring in somebody who can compete and make the team better," Marshall said.

The Miami Dolphins announced several coaching moves on Monday, including the re-hiring of linebackers coach George Edwards. Edwards spent five seasons (2005-09) as the Dolphins linebackers coach before leaving the team for a defensive coordinator position at the University of Florida, but left the spot for the same position with the Buffalo Bills. Prior to his first stint with the Dolphins, Edwards coached linebackers with the Dallas Cowboys (1998-2001), was linebackers then defensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins (2002-03) and coached linebackers with the Cleveland Browns.
Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall Talks To Matt Flynn About Teaming Up In Miami

Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall has already talked to Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn, an unrestricted free agent in March, about joining him in South Florida, Jeff Darlington of NFL.com reports. "You've got some guys (quarterbacks) in the draft, but there's not too many guys out there just walking the streets," Marshall said. "Matt is available...We've talked. I reached out to him. I get it from Ray Lewis. Around this time of year, players talk to players." Marshall is playing in his third Pro Bowl after catching 81 passes for 1,214 yards with six touchdowns, all while catching passes for Chad Henne and Matt Moore. Henne is also an unrestricted free agent, while Moore is signed through next season. Flynn has spent the last few seasons playing under Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin, who was the offensive coordinator in Green Bay. That familiarity, plus a lucrative, long-term contract, would make him the No. 1 quarterback in Miami. "Obviously, Matt had a great year," Marshall said of Moore. "You don't want to take anything away from Matt, but I think we really bring in somebody who can compete and make the team better. We need someone who is going to grab a hold of our offense, hold everyone accountable and be that leader."

Jeff Ireland Says Carl Peterson Will Not Join Dolphins' Front Office

Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland Friday put an end to the ongoing speculation that former Kansas City GM and President Carl Peterson will be joining the Dolphins' front office anytime soon, stating that the team's front-office structure is set for the time being. "This is the way it's going to be: It's (owner) Stephen Ross, it's coach (Joe Philbin), and I," Ireland said in a meeting with reporters and editors from The Palm Beach Post at the team's training facility. Ireland said that while Peterson sat in on most of the interviews during the recent coaching search and is often consulted by Ross in his office in New York, his role has been and will continue to be strictly an advisory one. "It's been good for me, when Steve is up in New York and Carl is right down the hall from him, to get a football perspective, rather than a non-football perspective," Ireland said. "You can imagine a lot of people are in Steve's ear who don't have a football background. So for Carl to be up there, really, he's on my side. He sees it the way I see it." Peterson is an executive with FanVision, a hand-held device used in football stadiums and auto-racing venues and is one of Ross' many business ventures.

Dolphins Sign Bengals DB Coach Kevin Coyle As Their Defensive Coordinator

The Miami Dolphins have hired Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle on Friday, becoming Miami's newest defensive coordinator according to NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora. Coyle will replace Mike Nolan, who joined the Atlanta Falcons in the same function over the offseason. Coyle appeared to be a favorite for the job from the start. After NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora reported that Miami was interested, the Dolphins were granted two interviews, the first of which took place on Wednesday. It was initially surprising that the Bengals would even allow the interview in the first place, after rejecting the Philadelphia Eagles a request for an interview last year.

Dolphins Set To Hire Mike Sherman As Offensive Coordinator

Barring any last-minute surprises, Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin is expected to name Mike Sherman as his offensive coordinator on Friday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. A head coaching candidate with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and offensive coordinator candidate with the Cleveland Browns, the 57-year-old Sherman gave Philbin his first NFL coaching opportunity as an assistant offensive line coach with the Green Bay Packers in 2003. Sherman was 59-43 in his six seasons with the Packers, and after two seasons as an assistant with the Houston Texans became the head coach of the Texas A&M program in 2008. Sherman has also coached tight ends with the Packers (1997-98) and was the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator in 1999. Sherman replaces Brian Daboll and inherits an offense that ranked 22nd in total offense -- 11th in rushing offense, 23rd in passing offense -- and were 20th in scoring offense with a 20.6 points per game average.

Acquiring Peyton Manning Is ‘The Priority’ For Dolphins

A source told Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald today that acquiring the longtime Colts QB is “the priority” for the Dolphins, who rumor has it have also expressed interest in Packers backup Matt Flynn. The Dolphins limped their way to 6-10 this past season with Matt Moore, Chad Henne and J.P. Losman sharing time under center. They’re beginning a new era next season with new coach Joe Philbin at the helm, and they’re in the market for a new quarterback as well. Manning’s situation in Indianapolis is currently very much in doubt. The 14-year veteran missed all of this season recovering from neck surgery, and it’s unclear whether the Colts will stick with the soon-to-be-36 Peyton Manning or hand over the reins to Andrew Luck, the likely No. 1 pick this spring.

Dolphins Reportedly Close To Hiring Kevin Koyle As Defensive Coordinator

According to multiple sources including Joe Reedy with the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, the Miami Dolphins are close to signing Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle as their new defensive coordinator, plugging a hole that was left open with Mike Nolan's departure for the Atlanta Falcons. Coyle concluded his interview with the Dolphins on Thursday. It is not wrapped up yet, but all indications are Coyle will be Miami’s new defensive coordinator after 11 seasons here as the secondary coach. The Cincinnati Bengals did receive some good news on Thursday after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they signed Greg Schiano, closing the door on Mike Zimmer's opportunity to become a head coach in the NFL this year. That means Zimmer will be back as Cincinnati's defensive coordinator to finish out the three-year deal he signed in 2010.
