Lions Interested In Trading For Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins?

wboys cbAlthough the Detroit Lions seem relatively happy with their cornerback situation, that doesn't mean that they won't explore upgrading the talent at the position. After drafting three cornerbacks, you might expect them to stand pat, but ESPN Dallas' Calvin Watkins reports that the Lions are one of the teams interested in potentially trading for Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins. The problem for the Lions is that the Cowboys don't seem to be interested in trading Jenkins right now. After signing Brandon Carr and selecting Morris Claiborne in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, speculation immediately began that Jenkins would be dealt, but so far, the Cowboys have decided to keep him. ESPN's John Clayton reported on SportsCenter on Saturday that he expects the Lions to be a team with interest in making a deal "down the line," assuming the Cowboys change their mind and decide to trade him.

The Indianapolis Colts are making a major play for disgruntled Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins, a source with knowledge of the talks confirmed. In the final year of his contract, Jenkins has stayed home from OTAs with hopes of being traded. The Cowboys have publicly said they viewed Jenkins as a part of their future, and coach Jason Garrett said Thursday "We're not gonna trade him." Yet privately, they have been entertaining offers. Anthony Spencer, one of Jenkins' Cowboy teammates, said he understands that a move to trade the cornerback is a business decision. "If anyone understands, I understand, but at the same time, you want a guy like that to be around the team and what not," Spencer said on Wednesday of the possible move. "But it's always a decision. I support him. He's my teammate. Whatever decision he makes."

The NFL Players Association has filed a federal lawsuit, alleging that the NFL and its owners conspired in collusion to establish a "secret $123 million salary cap" in 2010, which under the previous labor agreement was designated as an uncapped year of spending. the NFLPA claims that it learned on or about March 12, 2012 that four teams -- the Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints -- did not abide by the NFL's secret rules that effectively advised teams to operate in 2010 under a $123 million salary cap. An NFLPA source said that the union was "strong-armed" into the agreement because the salary cap would have been set at a league-wide $113 million per team instead of $120 million.

Redskins, Cowboys Salary-Cap Appeals Dismissed

League system arbitrator Stephen Burbank has dismissed the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins appeal of salary-cap penalties incurred for creating an unfair competitive advantage by inflating base salary figures for certain players in the 2010, an uncapped year, NFL general counsel Jeff Pash said at the NFL league meetings on Tuesday. The Redskins are appealing $36 million in cap space docked by the league, applied over this season and next. The Cowboys are appealing a similar cap-space penalty of $10 million. The teams had a 90-minute appeal hearing before arbitrator Burbank at the University of Pennsylvania on May 10. Although the teams said there were no rules against dumping large base salaries onto the 2010 books, other franchises were upset about it.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins won't be attending organized team activities when they begin Tuesday, a source with knowledge of Jenkins' situation said. He is rehabbing his shoulder after offseason surgery, so he would not have been able to participate in the on-field portions, anyway. But staying away from the workouts -- which are voluntary -- is a choice Jenkins is making. He has also not been around the team during offseason conditioning. Jenkins is hopeful of being traded, a source said, especially after the team picked Morris Claiborne with the sixth overall pick of the draft and signed free-agent Brandon Carr.

Cowboys training camp begins in late July. Claiborne had surgery on his left wrist in March for an injury he incurred during his junior season at LSU. He's been in a soft cast since early May, when he had pins removed from the repaired wrist. The return date for Claiborne was originally set for training camp, but Claiborne's comments last week that he hoped to be ready by June sparked some hope that he could debut sooner.

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys knew Morris Claiborne would require time to heal after pre-draft surgery on his left wrist. The expectation all along was that the sixth overall pick would be ready for training camp in late July. Claiborne, mostly a bystander at the team's rookie minicamp, has targeted the Cowboys' June 12-14 mandatory minicamp for his debut. "I hope to be fully recovered and ready for that," Claiborne told Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com. "I'm so eager and ready. It's hard just sitting there, watching, knowing you can do it but you've just got one small thing wrong with you holding you back. But I'm looking forward to it and trying to push that up." The former LSU star tore ligaments in his wrist last season in a game against Alabama in November.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray said Monday that the ankle injury that prematurely ended his standout rookie season has healed and he has been cleared by team doctors. “It's great,” Murray said during an interview on ESPN. “I've been officially cleared by our doctors, and I've been doing everything the past month or two without any limitations. I feel great.” Murray suffered a fractured right ankle and a high right ankle sprain in a Week 14 loss to the Giants. Murray had surgery in December, began rehab shortly after and started running in February. The third round pick finished the 2011 season with 897 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Jerry Jones Tells 1992 Team They're The Reason Cowboys Stadium Was Built

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was on hand Friday night as the 1992 Super Bowl team was honored at a dinner sponsored by one of the greatest players Jones has ever signed -- Emmitt Smith. The majority of players that represented Jones' first Super Bowl title since purchasing the franchise in 1989 were also in attendance. Jones and Smith took center stage near the end of the dinner portion of the evening, where Jones moved his attention to all of the players in the room that built the foundation for an organization that would go on to win three Super Bowls in four years. "Since that particular time, without even blinking, what you did as a team, what you evolved into as an individualized team together, that's what built that stadium," Jones said, referring to the $1.2 billion venue in Arlington that the Cowboys currently call home. "The Cowboys were special before I ever got here," Jones said. "And it is special. When you are in this country today ... when those Cowboys get on television we're going in a way that that's the most watched anything there is in sports in this country. When you go back to Drew [Pearson] and those great players ... they had everything to do with it as well. No one could ever believe that you'd have the visibility and the interest that you got, not only in sports, but in the NFL today. No one ever thought that it would be this and grow into this for the Dallas Cowboys."

Cowboys TE Jason Witten Says The Window To Win A Super Bowl Is Closing

Jason Witten is only 30 but this year he'll be entering his 10th season in the NFL, which is hard to believe for the Cowboys veteran tight end. "I think you enjoy the journey but most importantly this opportunity to take advantage of it," Witten said Saturday. Since he joined the organization in 2003, Dallas has won only one playoff game and struggled to build a team capable of becoming a perennial contender. As a result, some wonder if Witten, quarterback Tony Romo and linebacker DeMarcus Ware -- the Cowboys' most high-profile players -- will ever experience the same championship glory that many of their predecessors once did. "You try not to think about the window," Witten said. "But obviously, we're realists. We understand where it's at. I feel great and we're playing great. But it's about now. I think that's how this whole organization thinks, from owner to head coach to veteran players to rookie players. That's the way this league works." Witten has spent the last four months seething about the loss to New York Giants in the 2011 regular-season finale that killed the Cowboys' playoff hopes and kick-started their NFC East rival's march to the Super Bowl. "It crushes you," he said. "You don't need a loss like that to motivate you. That's for sure. Every year you're more and more motivated. You realize that time is now for a lot of key players. You need to take advantage of that. But, hey, give them credit. They made the plays they needed to make and got in the playoffs and went on a run. For us, we need to learn from that and not feel sorry for ourselves from that standpoint but allow that to be a game-changer for us to realize that every minute matters and you can't let an opportunity like that slip."

Ex-Cowboys FB Daryl Johnston Says Medical Care Trumps Lawsuits

On the same evening that a tribute was held for the late Junior Seau, former Dallas Cowboys fullback Daryl "Moose" Johnston spoke about his concern that concussion-related lawsuits should not overshadow what he considers a more pressing issue -- medical care for retired players, according to ESPN Dallas. The Fox analyst is not involved in the class-action lawsuits and has not reported any issues related to concussions following his 11-year career. "I understand that there are some guys that are in some tough shape right now," said Johnston at a charity dinner of former teammate Emmitt Smith, which also served as a reunion for the 1992 Cowboys' Super Bowl team. "We do need to definitely figure out a way that they're having the quality of life that they deserve. That's the most important thing. I don't want that to be lost during the course of this lawsuit, because these are class-action lawsuits based by the guy who did asbestos and based by the guys that did tobacco. They're going to get a lot of money if they win these lawsuits. They have other reasons to be in this. I hope some of them have genuine concern for the players that they're representing."

Chargers, Cowboys To Hold Joint Practices In Training Camp

The San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys will hold joint practices following their August 18 preseason game in San Diego, Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News reports. The two practice days, which will be held on August 20-21, will close the California portion of the Cowboys' 2012 training camp. Last summer, the two teams held joint practices in Texas before playing in a Sunday night preseason game on August 21. Chargers center Nick Hardwick is looking forward to the joint practices, which help the teams prepare for actual game situations. "They lined up, and right in our first play on nine-on-seven, they said, 'Move!'" Hardwick said according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune. "They shifted the front to a completely different front than they had shown pre-snap, and we had to adjust on the fly. It threw a little wrench into the system, which is good because that's how a game works. "You sometimes show up to a game and you think you've got the plan dialed in. All the sudden, things change, and there you are, adjusting on the fly."
