Chargers Showing Interest In Fresno St. RB Ryan Mathews

Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews, whose stock has risen with strong performances at the Combine and his pro day, could be a target of the Chargers with the 28th overall pick, ESPN reported. After cutting LaDainian Tomlinson, the Chargers need a feature back to team with scatback Darren Sproles. Chargers general manager A.J. Smith reportedly met with Mathews before his pro day last Wednesday, when Mathews (5-11 5/8, 218) was timed at 4.48 and 4.53 in the 40 after posting a time of 4.45 at the Combine. "When GMs come out here to watch you, it's a big deal," Mathews told the Fresno Bee. "Hopefully, they like you. Hopefully, I impressed him enough to where if I get a chance to be on his team, (Smith) picks me up."

A.J. Smith Says Chargers "Fell Into" Trading Charlie Whitehurst

Charlie Whitehurst was the little-known and even lesser thought of No. 3 quarterback in San Diego, behind starter Philip Rivers and backup Billy Volek, and four years into his NFL career, he's still waiting to throw his first regular-season pass. But that didn't stop the Seahawks and Cardinals from getting into a bidding war of sorts over him, a war Seattle wound up winning by swapping second-round picks with San Diego (the Bolts make an eye-opening jump from the 60th overall pick to the 40th) and sending the Chargers a third-rounder in 2011, then awarding the unproven ex-Clemson product a two-year, $8 million contract that includes another $2 million of incentives. Wanting to know more about Seattle's would-be savior, Don Banks of Sports Illustrated called Chargers general manager A.J. Smith on Thursday afternoon. "We just fell into it," Smith said of the trade talks that emerged after San Diego tendered Whitehurst, a restricted free agent, at a third-round level (his original draft slot). "We tendered a third, at a $1.1 million (salary) this year, [thinking] if he returns to us this year, we'll have the same rock and roll band again this season with Rivers, Volek and Whitehurst. But now here comes the activity, and it's between Arizona, which had a standard third-round pick, and Seattle. But there's a little bit of a twist because the Seahawks didn't have a three. So I presented a package to them that I thought was attractive to us, and it's accepted. They wanted the player. And that's how it went down. I think they liked him in Clemson and they tracked him through college and in the preseason. They've done their research and made a judgment. They've looked at his intangibles, his background, where he's been trained, what kind of a guy he is, and what his study habits are. I think that's all positive. I think the only thing missing is the body of work as an NFL player."

Alabama DT Terrence Cody Has Visits Scheduled With Three NFL Teams

University of Alabama burly nose guard Terrence Cody was down to 348 pounds at his Pro Day workout after tipping the scales at 370 pounds at the Senior Bowl and weighing in the neighborhood of 400 pounds when he was in junior college a few years ago. Although Cody still confesses to an occasional weakness for his mom’s sweet potato pie, he has become much more disciplined about his diet and workout regimen. “I’ve been working really hard,” Cody told the National Football Post during a telephone interview Saturday afternoon. “When I came in at 348 pounds, it shocked a lot of people and I ran a better 40-yard dash. Day in and day out, I’m trying to get in better shape and keep the weight off and maintain my strength. This is the best shape I’ve been in since high school, but this is me getting into good football shape." The 6-foot-4 defensive lineman is scheduled to visit the Baltimore Ravens, the New York Jets and the San Diego Chargers.

Chargers Trade QB Charlie Whitehurst To The Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks agreed to move down 20 spots in the second round and part with a 2011 third-rounder to acquire quarterback Charlie Whitehurst from San Diego. The price is a bargain if Whitehurst turns into a good starter for the Seahawks after signing what is expected to be a two-year deal worth about $5 Million annually. Assuming Matt Hasselbeck remains in place, this move could diminish the likelihood of the Seahawks drafting a quarterback in the first round.

Restricted free-agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst will sign his tender from the Chargers on Wednesday, according to a league source, which would be a necessary step as part of a trade. Whitehurst indicates his preference is to sign with Seattle, and is awaiting the Chargers and Seahawks to agree to a trade, according to a league source. Whitehurst, the son of former NFL quarterback David Whitehurst, was extended a third-round tender by the Chargers, which would be the compensation if they would choose not to match an offer sheet but the Seahawks do not have a third-round pick, however, and thus would have to work out a deal with the Chargers.

He said there was a “50-50” chance Leaf will receive prison time as part of his recommended sentence. Leaf’s charges stem from his tenure as an assistant football coach at West Texas A&M. “Some of the victims are not that enthusiastic about him going to prison,” Farren said. “We try to at least give the victim a voice in these things. They’re young college players, and they have still have some rapport with the guy. They feel bad about the possibility of him going to prison.” On the other hand, Farren said, “other victims are not all that sympathetic.” They’re young college players. They looked up to him even though I’m sure they feel a bit betrayed.”

San Diego Chargers executive vice president and chief operating officer Jim Steeg said he's leaving the team to pursue "further challenges," as of March 31, the team announced this afternoon. “I have decided that there are further challenges that I would like the opportunity to pursue during my professional career,” Steeg said in a statement. “Given my goals and aspirations, I did not think it was fair to Dean (Spanos) and the organization to begin the process of pursuing other career options while in my current position. I have thoroughly enjoyed my five-plus seasons with the Chargers and am very proud of the accomplishments of the organization during this time. I will always be appreciative of Dean and the Spanos family for the opportunity I was given in 2004 and will continue to be available to help in any way I can.” Steeg was in charge of special events for the NFL for 26 years prior to joining the Chargers. “I’m disappointed to see him go,” Chargers president Dean Spanos said. “Jim provided solid leadership and many bright, new ideas for our front office. I’m extremely grateful for his dedication and loyalty to the Chargers and our family.” No replacement was named, but Spanos said that Speeg's duties will be divided around the front office.

The Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks have extended contract offers to Chargers restricted free agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Whitehurst, San Diego’s No. 3 quarterback behind Philip Rivers and Billy Volek, will make a decision on which offer sheet to sign within the next 48 hours, according to the source. The fact that the Cardinals and the Seahawks have extended offers to the fourth-year veteran who has yet to throw an NFL pass means, at the very least, that they plan to add depth behind Matt Leinart and Matt Hasselbeck, respectively.

Cardinals, Seahawks Both Discussing Contract With QB Charlie Whitehurst

The Cardinals and Seahawks are both discussing contract parameters this weekend with Chargers quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, a restricted free agent. The Chargers gave Whitehurst an original round tender, meaning they would receive a third-round pick in return should they not choose to match a team's offer for Whitehurst, drafted out of Clemson in 2006. The Seahawks don't have a third-round pick, so they would have to trade for Whitehurst while the Cardinals have two third-round picks and apparently are willing to part with one of them for Whitehurst.

Seahawks, Cardinals To Consider Offer Sheets For Charlie Whitehurst?

Both the Seahawks and Cardinals are mulling offer sheets for restricted free agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, according to league sources. Whitehurst, who has been the Chargers’ No. 3 QB, had impressive visits with Seattle and Arizona and could have an offer sheet within 48 hours. Both teams need help at the position and, in both cases, Whitehurst, who has yet to throw a regular-season pass in his four-year career, could have the opportunity to start.

Chargers LB Shawne Merriman Reiterates He Wants To Return

Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman, a five year veteran, was hoping to become an unrestricted free agent when his contract expired but with 2010 being an uncapped year, Merriman lacks the sufficient number of years to file for unrestricted free agency. Under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement in an uncapped year, players who wish to file for unrestricted free agency must have six years of playing eligibility, but Merriman has five, and so the Chargers placed the highest possible tender on him in hopes of getting one more year of his services. Merriman joined XX Sports Radio in San Diego to talk about whether he thinks there is a chance that he won't be a Charger next year. "I have no idea actually," Merriman said. "You know I am just getting ready for football. That is really it. That is all I know right now. I have said it a thousand different times. I would love be there. No question, no doubt in my mind. I can't even see myself playing anywhere else. But there is that business side of it and I cant do anything about it. I will wait to see what happens."

Matt Hasselbeck may be in place but it’s pretty evident that Pete Carroll and the new coaching staff are exploring some options. Quite frankly, Whitehurst might be a little more intriguing than Anderson.
