Appearing on NFL Network's Around the League segment Monday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune said it would require a "miracle turnaround" for Norv Turner to stay on as the Chargers head coach in 2012. The Chargers have dropped five straight games after a 4-1 start and are in last place in the AFC West. ESPN NFL analyst Jerry Rice also blamed Turner for the Chargers' collapse this season on SportsCenter Monday. "Norv Turner is one of those coaches that just can’t you over the hump," Rice said. “I played under this guy." The Chargers appear headed to missing the playoffs for a second-straight season.

Chargers OG Kris Dielman Leaning Toward Playing In 2012

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, those close to Chargers left guard Kris Dielman and team sources indicate that he is leaning toward playing in 2012 after a scary concussion and seizure prompted him to consider retirement. Dielman as you may recall, suffered a concussion when he collided with New York Jets linebacker Calvin Pace in October. Immediately following the play, Dielman wobbled and appeared disoriented but remained in the game. On the team's cross-country flight home to San Diego, Dielman suffered a seizure near the end of the flight and was hospitalized.

A man has filed a lawsuit against San Diego Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips alleging the player broke a Champagne bottle over his head at a Pacific Beach bar in 2009 according to Kristina Davis of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Kam Saran filed the lawsuit in San Diego Superior Court in November. The suit says Phillips struck or dropped the bottle on Saran’s head at Bar West. Saran, then 24, suffered a laceration and closed-head injury as a result, according to the suit. Phillips’ attorney responded to the suit in December, denying all allegations. San Diego police investigated the Nov. 23, 2009, incident when it occurred but made no arrests.

Chargers, WR Vincent Jackson Both Want To Get A New Deal Done?

Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson wants to remain in San Diego, and it’s sounding more and more like the Chargers want to keep the free agent to be. “The way he performed this year speaks to how valuable he is to our team,” Chargers coach Norv Turner told me. “From a coaching standpoint, I’d love to have him here. When you look at his production, his average per catch separates him from a lot of guys. “

While sources suggest general manager A.J. Smith is now “comfortable” exploring a long-term deal for Vincent Jackson, the Chargers wide receiver said he has yet to speak to Smith himself. “There hasn’t been any communication as far as contracts go,” Jackson said following Wednesday’s Pro Bowl practice. “If that’s their feeling, that’s great. I would like to stay in San Diego. Obviously, that’s my home, that’s where I was drafted. I’ve got some good guys around me – Philip Rivers (Antonio) Gates, Ryan Mathews. It would be a great place for me to stay, so we’ll see if that works out.” Jackson, who earned $11.4 million this past season as the team’s franchise player, said he’d prefer to avoid the tag again. “That’s something that’s out of my control,” he said. “I can’t concern myself with how that goes. I’d love to have a long-term deal just to have security of where you’re going to be for a while. That’s a decision that they have to make.”

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has developed a reputation for not speaking with the media and this has created a perception that he is standoffish. “They think (Smith) is a mean guy,” owner and team president Dean Spanos said. “He really is not. . . I didn’t hire him for his people skills.” Spanos went on to say Smith will do a better job of speaking to the media in the near future.

Panthers Coach Ron Rivera To Hire Steve Wilks As New Secondary Coach

The Carolina Panthers appear to have found their new secondary coach – and it's someone familiar both with Charlotte and Panthers coach Ron Rivera. San Diego Chargers defensive backs coach Steve Wilks has accepted the same position with the Panthers, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Saturday. A Panthers spokesman said he could not confirm the hire. Wilks, who grew up in Charlotte, played at Appalachian State and for the Charlotte Rage in the Arena Football League in 1993. He worked with Rivera in Chicago and San Diego, where he had the title of assistant head coach on Norv Turner's staff.

Even with both Philip Rivers and Billy Volek being over 30 years old, don't expect the Chargers to target a young quarterback this offseason. A team source said the front office is pleased with the depth at the position and won't use a draft choice or much cap space to find a younger option. There is a possibility the team could sign an undrafted rookie and develop him through the offseason and camp, giving them the option of a third QB if the player progresses.

The Denver Broncos have signed veteran long-snapper David Binn, the team announced on Friday. Binn, 39, handled the snapping duties for the San Diego Chargers in 256 games from 1994 through Week 1 of the 2010 season before landing on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Binn was released by the Chargers at the end of training camp and spent the 2011 season as a free agent. Lonie Paxton, the Broncos regular long-snapper, has been ruled out of tomorrow night's game due to a family-related personal matter. To make room for Binn, rookie fullback Austin Sylvester has been placed on waivers.

Chargers OC Clarence Shelmon Says He Won't Return In 2012

Offensive coordinator Clarence Shelmon will not return to the Chargers next season, he said Tuesday. Shelmon, who spent 10 seasons with San Diego and 21 in the NFL, was the longest-tenured assistant coach along with current defensive coordinator John Pagano. The offensive coordinator from 2007-2011, Shelmon expects to pursue other things in the future and looks forward to traveling with his wife Nancy. The two plan to visit Istanbul this summer and take a three-week trip to South Africa in December. “I’m just done,” said Shelmon, who coached football for a combined 37 years. “You know when it’s time. It’s time for me to go and do some other things with my life.” Among the Chargers’ accomplishments with Shelmon as coordinator, the Bolts led the NFL in total offense, average yards per play and average yards per pass in 2010 and averaged at least 25 points a game for eight consecutive seasons, a first for any franchise in NFL history.

Chargers To Stay In Qualcomm Stadium For 2012

The Chargers are staying in San Diego for another year. The team plans to issue a joint statement with the city of San Diego on Monday stating that the team will not exercise the out clause in its Qualcomm Stadium lease for 2012. "We will be issuing a joint statement, with Mayor Sanders, in the morning," Chargers stadium spokesman Mark Fabiani said Sunday night in an email, "confirming that we will be working throughout 2012 to find a publicly acceptable way to finance a new stadium on the downtown San Diego bus maintenance yard site." The Chargers are focusing their efforts on a site near Petco Park, a project that was dealt a heavy blow when state redevelopment funds were cut. The Chargers have an out clause that can be exercised from Feb. 1 to May 1 each year with a buyout that decreases annually. The buyout would have been $23 million this year.

Chargers Kept Coach Norv Turner To Avoid Distractions In Stadium Quest?

Before deciding to keep A.J. Smith and Norv Turner, Chargers owner Dean Spanos did a lot of research and kicked a lot of tires around the league. He decided to maintain the status quo for a variety of reasons. The Chargers believe they have one more good year left with their core group of players. It made sense, in terms of maximizing opportunity, to keep that core group with the general manager and coach who have a vested interest in them. This also is a big year for the Chargers in their stadium quest, and Spanos wants to be able to focus on that as much as need be.
