Chargers Preparing To Give RB Ryan Mathews A Larger Role

In his first two seasons in the NFL, San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews split carries with Mike Tolbert and Darren Sproles as a rookie and, after Sproles departed in free agency, with just Tolbert in 2011. Now that Tolbert has followed Sproles' free-agent path to the NFC South, Mathews is preparing to carry a bigger workload in 2012, Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reports. Mathews had 222 carries for 1,091 yards and six touchdowns last season, adding 50 receptions for 455 yards out of the backfield even though he logged less than 50 percent of his team's offensive snaps on the season. Tolbert played in nearly 45 percent of the snaps and had 175 touches, and his departure creates a potential production gap that Mathews will have an opportunity to fill. Head coach Norv Turner thinks Mathews ready and, according to Gehlken, suggested that Mathews has the potential to lead the league in rushing. "I personally think he’s ready to take that next step," Turner said. "That means, to me, the production goes way up, and he’s more of the guy that is on the field most of the time. I think he’s grown a lot in terms of understanding his responsibility when the ball is in his hand."

Chargers QB Philip Rivers Supports RB LaDainian Tomlinson Reunion

While we wouldn't call it a full-fledged "movement" quite yet, a potential reunion between the Chargers and LaDainian Tomlinson has become a topic of conversation in San Diego the last few days. First came the huge reception for Tomlinson at the celebration of Junior Seau's life. Then came a column from Jay Paris in the North County Times where Paris pleads with GM A.J. Smith to "swallow his pride" and sign Tomlinson, the Chargers, after all, need a third down back, this almost makes sense. Last came an interview with Philip Rivers on XEPRS-AM in San Diego where he was asked about Tomlinson. "I love LT and all that he brought and meant to us when he was here. I don’t know if that is being considered or that’s even an option, but I wouldn’t have any objection to it whatsoever," Rivers said via SportsRadioInterviews.com. The Chargers could use a third down back, but there are other options out there and (Can someone give Justin Forsett a job already?) Tomlinson brings some baggage to the locker room, and has even more baggage with the front office.

San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem Participating Fully In OTAs

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said that wide receiver Robert Meachem, who had his right knee scope earlier in the offseason, is participating fully in the team’s offseason workouts. “Oh yeah, he looks real good,” Rivers said. “He’s running around and picking up the offense super fast.” Rivers added, “Meachem is learning new stuff, but now we are getting to where we call plays and breaking the huddle and going and going and going. This looks like we have been together for awhile and that’s what you want and certainly we are not there yet. It has been great, but these guys are different from what we have had. … it’s been fun to throw to them.” The Chargers acquired Meachem in free agency after spending five seasons with the New Orleans Saints, who took him with the twenty-seventh overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Chargers Interested In Signing A Veteran Running Back

Eli Kaberon of Profootball Weekly reports after losing Darren Sproles and Mike Tolbert in free agency the past two years, many were surprised the Chargers waited until the seventh round of last month’s NFL draft to select a running back. The team needs depth behind starter Ryan Mathews, and though rookie Edwin ‘Rock’ Baker is expected to contribute as a third-down back, the team still has a glaring need to fill on the depth chart. According to a team insider, a veteran running back will be signed to fill that need at some point this offseason. There are still several quality backs on the market, and the team is waiting until players are willing to accept the veteran minimum contract before offering a deal. Players such as Jackie Battle and Cadillac Williams have been mentioned as possibilities, though the insider believes the team has other backs on the radar, too.

A full offseason seems to be doing wonders for Antonio Gates. Last month, the Chargers tight end said he was "excited" to prove he's still an elite player at his position after being slowed the past two seasons to a foot injury. On Thursday, coach Norv Turner affirmed the All-Pro's progress. "Gates looks great — he's back," Turner said. "Physically, he's back to where we want him to be. I think, like anybody, going through this offseason program helps you get better. (It's) the combination of conditioning, the combination of getting better in the areas you can improve, and being out there with your teammates." This time last year, Gates was still recovering from a plantar fascia injury. He was unable to work with the team's athletic trainers due to the lockout.

Three months ago, Chargers defensive lineman Tommie Harris faced unimaginable sadness when his wife, Ashley, died at the age of 29 from either a brain aneurysm or a stroke, Harris, though, vows to keep her memory alive, and to do so, he's planning to build a school in the Sudan for girls who have been affected by Joseph Kony's reign of terror. Harris is alone with his two young children, and soon before Mother's Day, the Chicago SunTimes caught up with Harris to talk about life after Ashley and how he's managing to get out of bed every day. ‘‘I don't want to be viewed as a celebrity who lost his wife,” Harris told the Sun Times. “I want to have respect for people who lose loved ones every day. It makes you realize that you're no different. Everybody is dealing with their own problems. I don't want to make a sad story, or ‘Woe is me.' I don't want that.” So, he wants to help those in Africa who have lived with horror. He's long been a proponent of helping those less fortunate -- for the past half-decade, he's visited Africa every year in an attempt to help -- and twice since they began seeing each other, Ashley went with him. According to the newspaper, “In March, during Harris' trip to Tanzania, a Massai village named its first source of water 'Ashley's Well,'” and Harris wants to name the new school “The Ashley Harris Sunshine School.” "She was a very kind person," said Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe, who will run the school. "She valued life, and she wanted to see these women reach a point where they could live in dignity."

The San Diego Chargers would like fourth round tight end Ladarius Green to add 10-15 pounds to his 6-foot-6 frame, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. "They're telling me to bulk up a little bit," Green said on Friday. Green was a high school wide receiver who added weight without losing speed during his four seasons at Louisana-Lafayette. Green weighed 235 pounds at the 2012 Scouting Combine and the club would like him to be at around 245 pounds as a rookie. During his 46-game career, Green caught 149 passes for 2,201 yards and 22 touchdowns, steadily improving his production during his career. A similar trajectory is expected at the NFL level, as Green could be the long-term replacement for an aging Antonio Gates who will play more as a "move" tight end as he adds weight and strength early in his career.

The San Diego Chargers will officially retire No. 55 in honor of the late Junior Seau, Chargers president Dean Spanos announced at Friday's memorial at Qualcomm Stadium. "Junior's accomplishments on the field speak for themselves," Spanos said. "His play on the field combined with his leadership and charisma became the face of this team for more than a decade. I can't think of anyone more deserving of this honor." San Diego used the fifth overall pick of the 1990 NFL Draft on Seau, an Oceanside, California native who played his college ball at USC. Seau spent 13 seasons with the Chargers, earning 12 straight trips to the Pro Bowl, the third-longest streak of any player in NFL history. Seau is a member of the Chargers' Hall of Fame and should be a first-ballot inductee to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible in 2015. In an addition to an official ceremony, which will take place at halftime of the Chargers' September 16 game against the Tennessee Titans, the Chargers will wear a No. 55 decal on their helmets and a No. 55 banner will be hung on the Qualcomm Stadium light ring during every home game.

Seau, 43, killed himself with a single gunshot to the heart, according to a coroner's report. Friday's "Celebration of Life" tribute is expected to draw more than 30,000, with a full house possible. Because of that, stadium personnel are making preparations as they would for a Chargers game. “We kind of have to because we don’t know how many will show up,” stadium manager Mike McSweeney told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “So we have to prepare as if it would be a full stadium event.” Former Chargers players, coaches and Seau teammates are expected at Friday's event, including: running back LaDainian Tomlinson, quarterback Dan Fout, safeties Rodney Harrison and John Lynch, and coach Bobby Ross.

Chargers Ink 5th Rd Pick OG Johnnie Troutman

The Chargers have now secured a contract with fifth round pick OG Johnnie Troutman. Safety Brandon Taylor, a third-round selection, and running back Edwin Baker, a seventh, remain unsigned. Troutman had a clean sheet as a senior, penalized not once on 885 plays while also not allowing a quarterback sack or pressure on 381 pass attempts. The 6-foot-4, 325-pounder injured himself in the weight room last month. He underwent pectoral surgery days before the draft, putting the playing status for his rookie season in doubt. But the big picture has promise, coach Norv Turner says. On Thursday, he called Troutman "a good player that projects real favorably into what we like to do offensively."

Chargers, Cowboys To Hold Joint Practices In Training Camp

The San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys will hold joint practices following their August 18 preseason game in San Diego, Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News reports. The two practice days, which will be held on August 20-21, will close the California portion of the Cowboys' 2012 training camp. Last summer, the two teams held joint practices in Texas before playing in a Sunday night preseason game on August 21. Chargers center Nick Hardwick is looking forward to the joint practices, which help the teams prepare for actual game situations. "They lined up, and right in our first play on nine-on-seven, they said, 'Move!'" Hardwick said according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune. "They shifted the front to a completely different front than they had shown pre-snap, and we had to adjust on the fly. It threw a little wrench into the system, which is good because that's how a game works. "You sometimes show up to a game and you think you've got the plan dialed in. All the sudden, things change, and there you are, adjusting on the fly."

Family Reportedly Unsure About Donating Junior Seau's Brain To Researchers

Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau died Wednesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Three days later, his family granted a request from researchers to study Seau's brain for evidence of damage resulting from concussions, pastor Shawn Mitchell told the Los Angeles Times. Now, according to Reuters, the family is reconsidering that decision. "They have now stepped back from what they were thinking initially," Mitchell said on Saturday. "Nothing is definite right now." Asked if the family would allow researchers to eventually examine Seau's brain, Mitchell said "I don't want to give the impression they're not going to anymore," before adding: "We thought everything was kind of nailed, and now it's in flux." Mitchell said the family wants to discuss matter before proceeding. "They just want to slow down, be sure they're doing it right," he said. "With the incredible, incredible anguish and grief and pressure of this situation, they've been in a fog. Now, they're getting counsel."

Drayton Florence could be coming back to San Diego. The Chargers hope so, anyway. The team expressed interest Friday in its former cornerback, sources said, after the Bills released the veteran earlier in the day. If signed, he would add depth to the secondary and likely serve as its new nickel back. A second-round draft pick in 2003, Florence spent the first five of his nine NFL seasons with the Chargers.

Robert Meachem confirmed Tuesday he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery after last season but it won't slow him down according to Michael Gehken of the San Diego Union-Tribune. In late January, the Chargers wide receiver had a minor procedure performed on his right knee, the same that was surgically repaired before his 2007 rookie season. “I'm still young, so it doesn't concern me,” Meachem said. “I'm 27. I feel great. Just taking it day by day.” Meachem, who signed a four-year deal with the Chargers in March, said he "banged" the knee Jan. 1 during the Saints' regular-season finale against the Panthers. He didn't miss any action, catching four passes for 111 yards and a touchdown the next week versus the Lions. He had the knee scoped in the weeks following the Saints' Jan. 14 playoff elimination. “It kind of flared up on me over the next few games,” Meachem said.
