Buccaneers Likely To Have $63.2 Million In 2012 Salary Cap Space

According to Pro Football Talk, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently $25.05 million under the salary cap and will be allowed to carry over all that cap space to next season. Meanwhile, the Bucs have committed $93 million to the salary cap next season. Detract from that Albert Haynesworth's $7.2 million cap number, as the Bucs are exceedingly likely to cut him rather than paying him that kind of money, and we come up with the following number: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will likely have $63.2 million in salary cap space next season. That's enough salary cap space to sign four or five top-tier free agents to big contracts. The Bucs will be players in free agency - though to what extent is obviously still unclear.

Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber, who becomes a free agent next month and has been pondering retirement, said he remains noncommittal on next season. But don't think the 36-year-old has closed the door on returning for a 16th season. “Things have to play themselves out like they did last year,” Barber said Saturday night at former teammate Shelton Quarles’ charity event at the Don Cesar in St. Pete Beach. “We’ll have a meeting of the minds like we did last year and if I fit in, we’ll go from there.” That would suggest Barber wants to play in 2012. When asked if that was the case, Barber said, “I’m not leaning one way or the other. I’m not allowing myself to lean one way or the other. I’m pretty sure where I stand, but I haven’t allowed myself to commit. It means, I don’t know. I don’t know is the best I can tell you. It could be either (outcome).”

Sullivan worked for the Giants as QB coach for two years, and for six years before that coaching wide receivers. He originally broke into the NFL in 2003 as an offensive assistant coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sullivan was a defensive back at Army, where he graduated in 1989. Sullivan joins the staff of new head coach Greg Schiano, who left Rutgers to take over the Bucs last month.

Butch Davis Will Have No Coaching Role With The Buccaneers

Butch Davis is expected to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their senior defensive assistant according to Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg-Times. Despite the title, it is an advisory role and he will not be part of the coaching staff or work with players on the field. The reason is that Davis doesn't want to violate the terms of a buyout in his contract with North Carolina, which fired him last year. It calls for him to receive about $2.7 million unless he accepts another coaching position. He already has received $933,000 and is set to receive $590,000 in January of 2013, 2014 and 2015.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired former NFL head coach Butch Davis, who'll serve as a senior defensive assistant, Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports. According to Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times, the deal is not complete, but talks continue. Davis spent last season on the NFL Network's "NFL Playbook" program. Davis has coached at the NFL level with the Dallas Cowboys (1989-94) and was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2001-04. In between, Davis worked as the head coach at the University of Miami, with Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano serving as his defensive coordinator for two seasons.

Former Rutgers receivers coach P.J. Fleck, after a bizarre series of events this week, reportedly is headed to Tampa Bay to coach the Buccaneers' receivers. Fleck had joined Northern Illinois this week as the school's offensive coordinator, but resigned on Friday -- one day after being named -- presumably because of his plans to join the Bucs. The news of Fleck's decision to join the Bucs is being reported by ESPNChicago.com. Fleck coached under Schiano at Rutgers for the past two seasons.

Gerald McCoy Says Buccaneers Lacked Discipline In 2011

Gerald McCoy's second season in the NFL wasn't a particularly great one. The defensive lineman, the third-overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, played in just six games because of injury, recorded just one sack, and saw the Buccaneers defense fall apart down the stretch after he went down. But McCoy, who's moonlighting as a reporter for OCNN this week, sounded pumped about the prospect of new Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano coming to Florida. "From what I found out, he's well-respected in the coaching circle," McCoy said Thursday. "I got to interview Bill Belichick earlier this week and he told me personally that he's learned a lot of stuff he knows from Coach Schiano. For a coach like Bill Belichick to give my new coach a stamp of approval? You can't ask for anything better than that. "He's defensive-minded and I'm a defensive player, so that's what I'm looking for." McCoy also acknowledged that last season's debacle was partially caused by a lack of discipline within the locker room, something that most folks believed happened, especially late in the year. "Here's the thing: in order to be a great team in the NFL, coming off a 10-win season, you're not going to surprise anybody any more," McCoy said. "So you're going to get everyone's best. And you can't do the same things if you're going to be great in this league. I learned that from Warren Sapp. You've got to give them something new. I just think our discipline level dropped a little bit. We kind of had the second-year slump coming off a 10-win season and kind of living off that. But I think we had a wake-up call. We got a new coach, they changed a lot of things and I think we're going to be back."

Buccaneers Interview Steelers Defensive Assistant Jerry Olsavsky

The Steelers are faced with the possibility of losing another young coach from Mike Tomlin's staff. Defensive assistant Jerry Olsavsky is interviewing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to become linebackers coach -- a move that was likely precipitated when linebackers coach Keith Butler turned down an opportunity to become defensive coordinator in Indianapolis. Olsavsky, who played from 1989-1997 with the Steelers, would have been in position to become linebackers coach if Butler decided to leave. The Steelers already lost one of the young assistants from their staff when Harold Goodwin, an assistant offensive line coach, left to become offensive line coach with the Colts.

Buccaneers Still Working To Pry John McNulty From Cardinals

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano was a dealt a tough blow when the Arizona Cardinals declined the team's request to interview Cardinals receivers coach John McNulty for the position of offensive coordinator. McNulty served on Schiano's staff at Rutgers from 2004-08 and was the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach during his last three seasons with the Scarlet Knights. Considering the investment the Bucs have in quarterback Josh Freeman, offensive coordinator is arguably the most critical hire on Schiano's staff, it's believed that Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt made the call on prohibiting McNulty from interviewing with the Bucs. Because it's such an important hire, the Bucs still are working behind the scenes to acquire McNulty, the Times confirmed. The effort may include an appeal directly to Cardinals owner Bill Bidwell, but it's hard to imagine the Cardinals reversing course at this point.

Bucs head coach Greg Schiano is interested in adding Butch Davis to the staff at Tampa Bay according to Peter King of SI.com. Schiano was Davis' defensive coordinator at the University of Miami in 1999 and 2000, and they have remained close. Davis hasn't coached in the NFL since he was dismissed by the Browns after the 2004 season. Davis could be defensive coordinator or an assistant head coach.

Buccaneers Hire Greg Schiano As Head Coach

The hiring of Rutgers coach Greg Schiano to fill the vacant Buccaneers job moved at light speed Thursday morning, and now according to CBSSports.com’s Brett McMurphy, the deal is done and Schiano has accepted the job. The hiring of Schiano is a big surprise, considering his name wasn’t mentioned among the numerous other candidates who the Buccaneers supposedly were after (including Oregon’s Chip Kelly, who accepted the job before changing his mind, and Mike Sherman and Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who were offered second interviews). But according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the two sides met twice without any word leaking to the media, including Wednesday. Apparently, Bill Rees -- who’s in charge of Tampa Bay’s college scouting -- stayed in touch with Schiano throughout the hiring process. So, it appears the Buccaneers had Schiano -- who will replace Raheem Morris after his 4-12 season -- in mind the entire time.

Rams Interviewed Greg Schiano As A Backup If Jeff Fisher Signed Elsewhere

The Buccaneers have taken some heat for hiring Greg Schiano, but they weren’t the only team that thought he was head coaching timber. The Rams interviewed him as a backup in case they didn’t land Fisher, and they loved him. In fact, Rams VP Kevin Demoff gave Schiano a glowing recommendation to his good friend Mark Dominik, the Bucs general manager. As soon as Chip Kelly turned down the Bucs, Dominik moved on Schiano. By the way, one of the reasons the Bucs thought so highly of Kelly is he was recommended by former Tampa Bay coaches Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden and Monte Kiffen.

Cardinals Deny Buccaneers Permission To Speak To Receivers Coach John McNulty

The Arizona Cardinals have denied a request by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to interview receivers John McNulty for the team's offensive coordinator vacancy, Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic reports. McNulty has been with the Cardinals for the last three seasons, returning to the NFL after coaching with newly-hired Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano at Rutgers University. McNulty coached receivers at Rutgers before he was promoted to assistant offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and assuming play-calling duties. With McNulty calling plays, the Scarlet Knights set school records for total offense and produced NFL players such as running back Ray Rice, wide receivers Kenny Britt and Tiquan Underwood and quarterback Mike Teel. Prior to working at Rutgers, McNulty spent five seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and one season with the Dallas Cowboys.

Greg Schiano Signed A Five-year, $15 Million Contract With Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed brand new head coach Greg Schiano to a five-year deal worth slightly more than $15 million, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. While that represents a small raise from his $2.3 million per year deal at Rutgers, it doesn't come close to the $6 million per year reportedly offered to Chip Kelly. While this isn't a bottom-dwelling head coaching deal, it's not exactly rich, either. That's to be expected when hiring someone with as low a profile as Schiano has. Spending a relatively low amount on a head coach could give the Bucs a chance to spend big on coordinators and other assistant coaches, if they're so inclined.
