Former Browns FB Jim Brown Still Not Sold On Rookie RB Trent Richardson

On draft day, Jim Brown didn't exactly sound like a believer in Trent Richardson, whom his Cleveland Browns drafted in the first round. Brown told ESPNCleveland.com that he doesn't see anything outstanding from the University of Alabama star. “When you think of greatness and the great backs, they all had some individual traits that you can identify – quickness, balance, power, speed,” Brown said. “I think the kid is a good working back, and if you’ve got everything else around him he can play his role. But when it comes to outstanding, I don’t see anything outstanding about him. It’s not said in a cruel manner. He’s very efficient, and that’s what you want.” Brown, who has been estranged from the Browns organization for several years, didn't sound sold on team president Mike Holmgren either. “What have I said about the Browns other than the fact that Richardson is an ordinary back? There’s so much I could say. So you tell all those people that want to look at me, look at what you’ve got. You’re sitting on a mess. You’ve got a guy that doesn’t give interviews except in other cities. I ask all the people in Cleveland, do you get the impression that Mr. Holmgren wants to be there? If you do, then tell me.”

Browns LB Scott Fujita Again Denies NFL's Bounty Claim

Browns LB Scott Fujita, facing a three-game suspension with the NFL alleging he was part of the Saints’ pay-for-performance scandal, once again denied his involvement Tuesday. Asked if he had evidence to clear his name, Fujita said: “Right now, it’s just my word against theirs, and it’s a tough situation to be in. Can I go to bed at night, look myself in the mirror and know what actually happened? Yes. But it’s an uphill battle. Can I go toe-to-toe with the media and all that kind of stuff? It’s a challenging prospect.” Fujita repeatedly said Tusday he stood by previous statements on the bounty allegations. “I have never contributed money to any so-called “bounty” pool, and any statements to the contrary are false,” he said in a statement released on his website in May. When asked if he believed if he would be playing in Week One instead of out of action, Fujita said Tuesday: "We'll see. I'm very optimistic. I'm always a hopeful guy, but I can only control what I can control right now, and that's getting myself ready to play." Fujita, 33, played for New Orleans from 2006-09. He is entering his third season with Cleveland, Fujita said the Browns have backed him throughout the bounty allegations. “They’ve been incredibly supportive, and I appreciate that very much,” he said.

Browns quarterback Colt McCoy said after practice Tuesday that he didn't ask to be traded because the Browns promised him a chance to compete for the starting job according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "As long as I'm given an opportunity to compete, if it's a fair competition, that's all you can ask for,'' McCoy said after the first day of organized team activities. He said he got a call from the Browns after they drafted Brandon Weeden No. 22 overall out of Oklahoma State. "(They) said 'just come in here and compete,''' he said. "As a competitor that's all you need to hear, really. You're just coming here with your head on right and giving it all you have every day.'' He said of his reaction to Weeden's drafting: "It is what it is. I've just got to go out and compete. I'm coming out here everyday working as hard as I can.''

"You can write about it and talk about it however you want. The best guy is going to play and we fully Brandon to be that guy,'' Heckert said at the Akron Browns Backers Banquet at Tangier Restaurant. "That's our goal is to have him be the guy. I think when we say, open competition, the best guy's going to play, that's just the way it is. But we drafted Brandon Weeden to be that guy. (You) draft a guy 22nd in the draft, you think he's going to be that guy.'' He said he saw of Weeden in rookie camp, "He's got a strong arm, he's accurate, he's smart and picking up the offense was nothing for him.''

Browns GM Tom Heckert Says NT Phil Taylor Will Be Back This Year

Browns General Manager Tom Heckert said Monday that Browns defensive tackle Phil Taylor, who underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a torn left pectoral muscle, will definitely be back in 2012. "Oh, 100 percent, yeah," Heckert said before his keynote address at the Akron Browns Backers Banquet at Tangier Restaurant. "I don't think there's any question about that. We think he'll probably be [ready] end of October, early November, but he'll definitely be back, no doubt, no question about it." Heckert said Taylor's recovery is the usual four- to six-months for a surgically repaired torn pec. "[It's] six months at the most," he said. "That's being very, very cautious. He could be back earlier than that." He said Taylor's injury isn't much different from the second torn pec that kept D'Qwell Jackson out for all of 2010. The difference is, Jackson's occurred in August. "If Phil's [happened in August], you would have to worry about it," he said.

Josh Cribbs Entering His Final Season With The Browns?

Jeff Schudel of The News-Herald believes that Browns WR Josh Cribbs could be entering his final season with the team. Schudel mentions the fact that Cribbs will be 29 in the coming weeks as being a concern, but the changes to the leagues kickoff rules also diminish his value. Cleveland has needs better options at receiver and while they may not have walked away with someone like Kendall Wright in this year’s draft, they almost certainly address the position with more young talent next year. Cribbs will make a reasonable $1.438 million for the upcoming season, he’ll probably have a hard time securing much more than that next year, assuming that he doesn’t have an incredible 2012 season.

Browns defensive tackle Phil Taylor underwent surgery to repair a torn left pectoral muscle today at the Cleveland Clinic, but "everybody's optimistic he's going to have a significant impact on the team this season,'' a league source told The Plain Dealer. The surgery went well, according to the source, and doctors feel everything's gone better than planned. Taylor was injured Friday while he was bench-pressing during the Browns off-season program at their facility in Berea. Browns President Mike Holmgren said that Taylor was going through his regular lifting regimen when the injury occurred and that he was using the appropriate amount of weights for his 6-3, 335 pound frame. Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Taylor would be out "months, not weeks'' and both Shurmur and Holmgren held out hope he'd return this season.

Browns quarterback Colt McCoy is determined to stave off the challenge from rookie Brandon Weeden for his starting job according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I'm a competitor and I'm working harder than ever,'' he wrote in an email. They were his first public remarks since Weeden was drafted No. 22 overall to become the Browns starter, McCoy declined further comment for now, because he's focusing on the Browns offseason program and the challenge he'll get from Weeden. McCoy might be available next week when the Browns open their organized team activities to the media for one of the three days. On Monday, Weeden joined McCoy and Seneca Wallace in Phase II of the offseason program, which includes about an hour of work on the field each day, meetings and conditioning. The Browns have consistently said that Weeden will have to compete for the starting job with McCoy and Wallace, but they're aiming for Weeden to be their starter this season.

Browns Rookie QB Brandon Weeden Ready To Compete

With their rookie minicamp in the rear view mirror and workouts with veterans set to begin, Cleveland Browns first-round pick Brandon Weeden is ready to compete with veterans Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace for the starting quarterback job, Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer reports. "Absolutely, I think we're just going to compete," Weeden said on Sunday. "Nothing will change. I know Colt (is) a good guy. I know Seneca is a good guy. I met Seneca, so I'm looking forward to just being part of the other quarterbacks." Head coach Pat Shurmur has stuck to the company line that Weeden will have to earn the starting job this summer, but the club certainly did not spend a first-round pick on the 28-year-old with the thought that he would have to sit behind McCoy or Wallace. The starting job is likely Weeden's to lose, with the main issue being him to adjusting to playing under center after operating out of the shotgun in Oklahoma State's spread offense. Shurmur liked what he saw from Weeden taking snaps from directly under center this weekend, but Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal noted a few fumbled exchanges. Weeden suggested those will go away once he's working with Pro Bowl center Alex Mack. "I feel really comfortable under center," Weeden said. "Every center is different. We've got (Garth) Gerhart -- he is a lefty. And we've got (Jarrod) Shaw -- he is a righty. That is a little bit different, but it's just a feel thing, a comfort thing. When Mack gets here, and I start to take snaps from him, it's going to be different. It's getting comfortable. But I'll be honest, I like being under center more because you can see what's going on and you get the ball immediately. If I had to pick one of the two, not that I don't like being in the shotgun, but I like being under center."

Browns Say Rookie WR Travis Benjamin Is In The Mix To Start

Rookie Travis Benjamin, the Cleveland Browns' fourth-round draft pick, will be in the mix for a starting wide receiver spot, coach Pat Shurmur told The Plain Dealer on Sunday. "I would say so," Shurmur said. "I saw a lot of good stuff from Travis this weekend and I feel like he'll only continue to get better." Shurmur expects the speedy receiver out of Miami to see significant time if he doesn't crack the starting lineup. The 5-foot-10, 172-pound Benjamin was the only receiver taken by Cleveland in the draft, sparking speculation that the team didn't do enough to address its shortage of pass-catchers for rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden. The Browns ranked 24th in the league in passing yards last season (3,090) and 27th in passing touchdowns (16). No Cleveland receiver was able to accumulate 1,000 receiving yards in 2011.

Browns President Mike Holmgren Doesn't Rule Out Adding Receiver

The Browns weren't able to draft an impact wide receiver in the first three rounds, but team president Mike Holmgren hasn't ruled out signing one over the next couple of months. "There’s a chance between now and the time ... we tee up that there will be an addition to the wide receiver group," Holmgren told a Cleveland radio station, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. "But if there isn’t, then honestly I feel pretty good about our guys." Holmgren continues to express faith in Greg Little, the team's second-round pick from a year ago who led the team in receptions -- but also averaged one drop for every five passes thrown his way, according to Pro Football Focus. "I said this last year and I will say it again, I think Little proved he can play in the league," Holmgren said, "and he’s going to get nothing but better after his first year." Holmgren called Mohamed Massaquoi "the wild card" of the wide receiver group. He set career lows last season in catches (31), receiving yards (384) and yards per catch (12.4). "I believe in that young man, I really do," Holmgren said. "I think he’s finally gotten over that concussion thing he’s had, and it kind of changed his game just a little a bit in my opinion. But he is a talented guy and I’ve had great talks with him and I think he can be a really, really fine player. So we will see." Holmgren added, "If that happens and with the addition of [fourth-round draft pick Travis] Benjamin who is fast on fast, I mean he can really run, I think we’re going to be OK there. Did we go into the draft thinking we could pick up another one? Yes we did but it didn’t happen.”

Former Ohio State linebacker Andrew Sweat signed a three-year contract with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent, but was a no-show for rookie mini-camp on Friday and will not pursue an NFL career, Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Post-Dispatch reports. In 39 career games as Buckeye, the 6-foot-1, 238-pound Sweat totaled 133 tackles, including nine tackles for loss, with three interceptions, four passes defensed and five forced fumbles. Sweat missed time as a sophomore with a knee injury that required surgery, a concussion during his junior season, and a concussion and elbow injury late in 2011. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten has a degree in finance and was accepted to five law schools, Rabinowitz adds. According to a league source, Sweat had signed a three-year contract with the Browns that included a $3,000 signing bonus.

The Browns have agreed to terms of a four-year contract with rookie defensive tackle Billy Winn, a league source told the Beacon Journal this morning but the terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed. The Browns drafted Winn in the sixth round (No. 205 overall) out of Boise State. The 6-foot-4, 295-pound Winn started 39 of 40 games during the past three seasons, he compiled 33 tackles, including eight for loss and three sacks, last season as a senior. The majority of Winn’s collegiate experience was at defensive tackle, though he played some end, too. He played defensive tackle and lined up as a three-technique this morning during the first practice of the Browns’ rookie minicamp. “I think anybody has to come in and fight for respect,” Winn said today after practice. “It doesn’t matter where you’re from. This is the next level. It doesn’t matter where you came from. You’ve gotta come in and earn respect and show that you’re a comnpetitor.”

Browns DT Phil Taylor To Miss Significant Amount Of Time With Torn Pectoral Muscle

Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Phil Taylor has suffered a torn pectoral muscle that will require surgery next week, head coach Pat Shurmur confirmed on Friday. "He's going to miss a significant amount of time ... more months than weeks," Shurmur said via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. "It's too early to speculate how long that will be. It's just one of those things that happened. "It's unfortunate. We feel bad for Phil. But he's in good spirits and he's going to come back from this thing stronger than ever." Taylor suffered the injury while lifting weights as part of the Browns' off-season workout program and underwent an MRI that revealed the tear. Selected with the 21st overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the former Baylor standout started all 16 games and totaled 59 tackles and four sacks while playing in nearly 70 percent of the Browns' defensive snaps last season. If Taylor is out for part of the season, 2012 third round pick John Hughes, who signed his four-year contract on Thursday, could start next to Ahtyba Rubin.
