Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno Fighting For A Roster Spot

Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno is reportedly "fighting for a roster spot," according to Lindsay Jones of The Denver Post. Appearing Friday on ESPN, Jones reported that Moreno was a participant at the team's organized team activities and struggling to stand out in a crowded backfield. Willis McGahee remains the starter and Lance Ball was productive last season so Moreno’s role could be reduced to passing situations, but John Elway was thrilled about the addition of rookie Ronnie Hillman. Meanwhile, backs rebounding from an ACL tear tend to decline and it doesn't help that Moreno was nabbed for a DUI in February. Following a promising rookie campaign (947 rushing yards, nine total touchdowns), Moreno has missed 12 games in two seasons.

HBO Plans To Have 'Hard Knocks' Team By June 1

HBO plans to have an NFL team in place for this year's edition of "Hard Knocks" by June 1, according to Michael Shain of the New York Post but thus far, finding a willing participant to appear in the popular program has been difficult. The Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins reportedly have either declined offers or informed HBO and NFL Films that they're not interested in opening their doors to camera crews. The New York Jets, who had a memorable run in the latest edition during 2010 training camp, haven't ruled out a return gig, though that seems unlikely considering how they're planning to keep the focus on football after a disappointing 8-8 season in 2011. The only team that has openly lobbied to appear is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Paranoia about letting camera crews into their facility is probably the driving force preventing the network and NFL Films finding a subject, but Shain reports that part of the struggle is the absence of NFL Films President Steve Sabol, who is battling brain cancer. "Without him going out to the teams twisting arms, it's been hard," a source tells Shain. "Nobody would say 'no' to Sabol."

The Denver Broncos announced they have acquired fullback Chris Gronkowski in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for cornerback Cassius Vaughn, the team announced on Wednesday. “We have a lot of depth in our secondary and this was an opportunity for us to add a quality fullback to our roster,” Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway announced via Twitter. Gronkowski has played 21 games during his career with Dallas (2010) and Indianapolis (2011). He’s gained 17 yards on five carries and 35 yards on seven receptions, including a receiving touchdown. Chris is one of three Gronkowski brothers currently on NFL rosters along with Rob (New England) and Dan (Cleveland), who spent the 2010 season with the Broncos. He played college football at Maryland (2005-06), overlapping with Dan, before transferring to Arizona, where he played with Rob (2007-09).

"I actually trimmed down a little to 228," he told the Denver Post. "I played 232 last year. I want to play at 222."

His passes were hitting receivers in stride and right between the numbers, not skipping off the ground or whizzing behind their heads like so many of Tim Tebow's. The Denver Broncos got their first real taste of Peyton Manning on Monday with a spirited, fast-paced workout, the four-time MVP's first full practice in more than 16 months. "It felt good to be out there. It's been a while for me," Manning said. "It's been about a year and a-half since I've been in uniform, been in an organized practice. So, it felt good to be out there. And it will be a good film to study." Monday also was the first chance for the media to get a look at the progress Manning has made since a series of neck operations sidelined him all of last season and led to his release from the Indianapolis Colts. And Manning looked great, showing zip and accuracy on his passes, comfort under center, complete command of his offense and no ill effects from the nerve injury that caused weakness in his throwing arm. "Man, it feels good to know he's going to be on my side because what I saw today, he's going to give us some good work," star cornerback Champ Bailey said. "And we might not see a quarterback like that all year."

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms on a four-year, $5.2 million contract with second-round defensive tackle Derek Wolfe, reports Mike Klis of The Denver Post. Wolfe was the team's first pick in this year's draft. According to Klis, the contract includes $3.2 million in guaranteed money. Selected with the No. 36 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the 6-foot-5, 295-pound Wolfe was a three-year starter at the University of Cincinnati, posting 162 tackles, 37 tackles for a loss and 19.5 sacks in 44 games. Financial issues nearly prompted Wolfe to enter the draft following his junior season, but he decided to remain in school. That decision was rewarded when Wolfe posted 70 tackles, 21.5 tackles for a loss and 9.5 sacks as a senior, earning co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The Denver Broncos will be honoring one of the franchise's greats by inducting receiver Rod Smith into the team's Ring of Honor, according to the Denver Post. Smith played for the Broncos from 1994-2007 and holds nearly all of the Broncos' pass receiving records after initially joning the team as an undrafted free agent from Missouri Southern. Many of those passes, of course, came from John Elway, who is now the team's vice president of operations. Smith is the 23rd player in Broncos history to be inducted into the Ring of Honor.

"He wants some new ideas and to run some new things," McCoy said, citing two-back formations as an example. What won't be carried forward? "Zone read is no longer here ," McCoy said, referring to the plays installed for Tim Tebow.

Defensive Line Coach Wayne Nunnely Retires, Broncos Promote Jay Rodgers

Denver Broncos defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely retired after 36 years of coaching. The team promoted Jay Rodgers to defensive line coach from coaching assistant. “It has been an absolute dream come true for me to coach for 36 years," Nunnely said. "I am so thankful for all the opportunities I have been givento have a positive impact on others through the game of football. More than anything, I am proud of the accomplishments of the teams and players I have been so privileged to work with over the years. “This was not an easy decision, but it was the right one for me and my family. At this stage of my life, I want to devote more time to my wife, Velda, and the rest of our family. They have been with me every step of the way through an incredible career that I’ve been so blessed to enjoy. The NFL has a wonderful retirement plan, and it’s time for me to begin the next chapter of my life." Added Broncos coach John Fox: "Wayne has been an outstanding teacher and mentor for so many players and coaches throughout his career. His passion for the game is something that I greatly admire, and it’s one of the many reasons why he was so valued and respected as a coach. Although I only had the opportunity to work with Wayne for one season, it was a pleasure to watch him coach. His positive influence on the defensive line was an important part of our team’s success. Jay Rodgers has been fortunate to learn from one of the very best. There is no doubt that his time with Wayne has prepared him for this opportunity that he has earned."

Last month, it was reported here that Denver Broncos defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson had agreed to a pay cut that reduced his 2012 compensation, and cap number, by $1.3 million. According to Mike Klis of The Denver Post, Vickerson wasn't the only defensive tackle coming off an injury that the Broncos approached about a pay cut. Ty Warren was asked to lower his salary, but has yet to agree to do so and is not attending the team's off-season workout program. Warren, 31, missed all of 2011 with at torn triceps and is due $4 million in base salary in the second season of a two-year, $8 million contract. Warren has yet to take a snap in a Broncos uniform and has not played in an NFL game that counted since a January 10, 2010 playoff game when he was with the New England Patriots.

Broncos, GM Brian Xanders Part Ways After Four Years

The Broncos and general manager have parted ways Monday after a four-year relationship, the team website is reporting. “Brian deserves a tremendous amount of credit and recognition for the contributions he made to the Broncos during his four years with the organization," Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said in a statement posted on the Broncos' website. "His hard work and dedication played a major role in the recent success of our team, most notably last season's division title and playoff win." Elway admitted that it wasn't an easy move to make. "It was tough because I have a great deal of respect for Brian as a football man but also as a person," he said Monday afternoon according to the Denver Post. "Even more so as a person. He was very helpful to me in this first year getting acclimated back to the NFL. I owe him a lot. Just from the conversation we had, we just thought for his career and for the Broncos we felt that now was the best time to go a different way." Xanders, 41, played for Bobby Bowden at Florida State and began his NFL career with the Falcons (1994-2007), before being hired as the Broncos' assistant general manager in 2008 by then-head coach Mike Shanahan. In 2009, he was promoted to GM by Shanahan's successor, Josh McDaniels.
