Bengals Looking For RB Bernard Scott To Be An Every-Down Back In 2012?

Bengals RB coach Jim Anderson wants to see Bernard Scott become more of an all-around back. "He has that versatility, so we just expect for him to work on it," Anderson told PFW at the Senior Bowl. "We're going to work on it and everything so that he can be more of the total package." Scott carried 112 times for 380 yards and caught 13 passes for 38 yards in 2011, his third NFL season. Overall, Scott received nearly twice as many touches as he did the previous season. The potential for Scott to receive even more work in 2012 is very apparent with starter Cedric Benson slated to be an unrestricted free agent. Should Benson depart, Scott will be the top option at tailback, though Cincinnati would figure to add another veteran and/or a rookie via the draft to bolster the depth at the position.

Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco Literally Thanked Bengals For Trading Him

Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco is soaking up the Super Bowl spotlight even though he's unlikely to be a leading man Sunday. Though No. 85 is now a role player, he's grateful for the opportunity to win his first ring and appreciates the Bengals' role in getting him here. "I sent everyone (in Cincinnati) a letter, a thank you note. I think that's the best I can do. Everybody who had anything to do with me being there, I hope they have it framed," Ochocinco said Wednesday of his former team, which traded him after the lockout following a 10-year stay when he broke most of the Bengals' career receiving records. "That's just the way it goes. (Owner) Mike (Brown) was good to me. The city was good to me. The media, we had our ups and downs. I made it fun. The fans were epic for 10 straight years. Of course, I had my riffs and raffs. Like any human being I'm not perfect. Other than that, there's nothing bad I can actually say, period."

Bengals Considering Rod Woodson For DB Coach

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is considering a familiar face to replace longtime defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle, who left to become the Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator. Hall of Fame defensive back Rod Woodson is a potential candidate to join the Bengals' coaching staff, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Lewis' connection with Woodson spans eight years from their time in Pittsburgh (where Lewis was the linebackers coach and Woodson was a cornerback) and in Baltimore (where Lewis was the defensive coordinator and lured Woodson to play corner and safety). Woodson was also a coaching intern with the Bengals in the 2010 training camp. The addition of Woodson would be a good one even though he has limited coaching experience, his only coaching job was last year when he was the defensive backs coach for the Oakland Raiders.

The Miami Dolphins have hired Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle on Friday, becoming Miami's newest defensive coordinator according to NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora. Coyle will replace Mike Nolan, who joined the Atlanta Falcons in the same function over the offseason. Coyle appeared to be a favorite for the job from the start. After NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora reported that Miami was interested, the Dolphins were granted two interviews, the first of which took place on Wednesday. It was initially surprising that the Bengals would even allow the interview in the first place, after rejecting the Philadelphia Eagles a request for an interview last year.

Dolphins Reportedly Close To Hiring Kevin Koyle As Defensive Coordinator

According to multiple sources including Joe Reedy with the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, the Miami Dolphins are close to signing Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle as their new defensive coordinator, plugging a hole that was left open with Mike Nolan's departure for the Atlanta Falcons. Coyle concluded his interview with the Dolphins on Thursday. It is not wrapped up yet, but all indications are Coyle will be Miami’s new defensive coordinator after 11 seasons here as the secondary coach. The Cincinnati Bengals did receive some good news on Thursday after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they signed Greg Schiano, closing the door on Mike Zimmer's opportunity to become a head coach in the NFL this year. That means Zimmer will be back as Cincinnati's defensive coordinator to finish out the three-year deal he signed in 2010.

Colts Tried To Talk With Jay Gruden, Perry Fewell

On Saturday, Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted that the team expected to hire a coach by "mid 2 late next week." If that's the case, cross two teams off the list: Indy wanted to talk with Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell but couldn't. According to CBS Sports Charley Casserly, Gruden turned down the Colts offer to interview and Fewell was still coaching and thus unavailable. "They asked permission to talk to Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden," Casserly reported on The NFL Today. "He declined to interview for the head coaching job with the Colts. They also wanted permission to interview with Perry Fewell, the defensive coordinator of the Giants but they couldn't even ask permission because Fewell is still coaching." Gruden's decision isn't particularly surprising considering he took his name out of the running for the Jaguars and Rams jobs earlier in the year, but it's a bit odd considering that he'd have his pick of top-tier quarterback to groom for the future, with Irsay already publicly saying that he'd take either Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III with the top pick. Fewell's a name that's always right there in the running for head coaching positions, but he's never gotten enough push to land a gig.

Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson was indicted on drug charges Thursday in Kenton County. The indictment charges Simpson with trafficking marijuana over 8 oz and less than five pounds, according to Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders and the charge is a Class D felony with a punishment of one to five years in prison. The indictment comes nearly four months after federal authorities swooped in on his Crestview Hills townhouse and seized a package containing 2.5 pounds of marijuana from California that had been shipped to his residence. Inside the home investigators also found about six more pounds of pot, scales and smoking devices. The head of the National Marijuana Initiative told California Watch after the arrest that the house was set up as a potential distribution network, the NMI is funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy and helps coordinate marijuana enforcement operations across the U.S.

Colts Ask To Talk To Bengals Defensive Coordinator Mike Zimmer

Since firing Jim Caldwell on Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts have wasted no time in looking for candidates to fill the vacancy. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Colts have asked for permission to interview Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Zimmer has made the rounds this off-season, in both Tampa Bay and Miami. He is no longer under consideration for the Dolphins head coaching vacancy, but now joins the fray in Indy that already includes candidates Pete Carmichael of New Orleans and Jerry Gray of Tennessee.

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct in Ohio. Jones entered the plea Wednesday in a Cincinnati courtroom and was ordered to serve one year of probation, complete 50 hours of community service and pay a $250 fine plus court costs. The 28-year-old Jones is accused of being disorderly, shouting profanities and trying to pull away as officers arrested him at a downtown bar in July. At the time, Jones was on probation in Las Vegas in connection with a 2007 no contest plea to a strip-club melee that left three people wounded. He was ordered in November to do an additional 75 hours of community service for violating that probation with the Cincinnati arrest.

Bengals RB Cedric Benson Unhappy With The Way He Was Used In Offense

Bengals running back Cedric Benson will become a free-agent in March. He is also unhappy with the way he was used this season in the Bengals offense because he shared the workload with Bernard Scott. “I don’t know what the future’s going to hold. You never know going into being a free agent, things like that,” Benson told Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I don’t have any closed doors, so we’ll see what the future holds.” Even offensive coordinator Jay Gruden acknowledged that trying to keep both Benson and Scott happy was a difficult balancing act. “From a consistency standpoint you’d like to get Bernard more carries, more touches and Cedric has earned the right to be a feature back in this offense the last couple of years,” Gruden said. “The more you give it to Bernard the more you’ve got Cedric over there scratching his head and not real happy. Really, to me, on a good football team nobody should worry about who’s scoring or who’s getting the ball so long as the team is moving.” Said Benson of the offensive changes: “I wasn’t a big fan of it. Granted I don’t make those decisions or calls and I have to find a way to make it work. It was something they started soon after the first game. There was a vision where they saw the offense going. I may not like it or agree with it but I’ll make it work if given the opportunity.”

Dolphins Reportedly Leaning Towards Hiring Mike Zimmer

ProFootballTalk.com’s Mike Florio reports that “there’s increasing chatter in league circles” that the Dolphins are leaning toward Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to fill their head-coaching vacancy. The move would reunite Zimmer and Miami G.M. Jeff Ireland, who spent six seasons together from 2001 through 2006 as employees of the Cowboys. The Bengals feared losing both Zimmer and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden after an unlikely playoff berth in 2011. Gruden has opted to stay. It would actually hurt a little less for Zimmer to go, given that head coach Marvin Lewis was a defensive coordinator before taking over the team in 2003.

Dolphins Could Ask Bengals Assistant Mike Zimmer Back For Second Interview

Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer had a strong interview with the Miami Dolphins for their vacant head coaching position and could be asked back for a second visit. League sources also said Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is being considered for an interview this week. The Dolphins badly hoped to land Jeff Fisher, who agreed to become the next St. Louis Rams head coach Friday, and have also interviewed interim head coach Todd Bowles, Chicago special teams coach Dave Toub and Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. NFL.com's Jeff Darlington reported Friday, citing a team source, that the Dolphins already have an interview lined up for Saturday. The source would not reveal the name of the candidate, who is not a "big name" in the category of guys like Jon Gruden or Bill Cowher.
