Chargers Preparing To Give RB Ryan Mathews A Larger Role

In his first two seasons in the NFL, San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews split carries with Mike Tolbert and Darren Sproles as a rookie and, after Sproles departed in free agency, with just Tolbert in 2011. Now that Tolbert has followed Sproles' free-agent path to the NFC South, Mathews is preparing to carry a bigger workload in 2012, Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reports. Mathews had 222 carries for 1,091 yards and six touchdowns last season, adding 50 receptions for 455 yards out of the backfield even though he logged less than 50 percent of his team's offensive snaps on the season. Tolbert played in nearly 45 percent of the snaps and had 175 touches, and his departure creates a potential production gap that Mathews will have an opportunity to fill. Head coach Norv Turner thinks Mathews ready and, according to Gehlken, suggested that Mathews has the potential to lead the league in rushing. "I personally think he’s ready to take that next step," Turner said. "That means, to me, the production goes way up, and he’s more of the guy that is on the field most of the time. I think he’s grown a lot in terms of understanding his responsibility when the ball is in his hand."

Sippio, 27, and Santana Coats, 30, are accused of attempted murder, armed robbery, aggravated battery and kidnapping against Sergio Moore, the newspaper reports. According to an Osceola sheriff's report, Sippio and Coats picked up Moore, 27, late Thursday and drove him to a rural pasture, where Moore was punched and kicked by the two men while Coats pointed a gun at him. Authorities say Sippio and Coats continued to terrorize Moore, who is a roommate of Sippio's, on the drive back home. Moore suffered a broken nose and lacerations to his hand and cheek.

Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno Fighting For A Roster Spot

Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno is reportedly "fighting for a roster spot," according to Lindsay Jones of The Denver Post. Appearing Friday on ESPN, Jones reported that Moreno was a participant at the team's organized team activities and struggling to stand out in a crowded backfield. Willis McGahee remains the starter and Lance Ball was productive last season so Moreno’s role could be reduced to passing situations, but John Elway was thrilled about the addition of rookie Ronnie Hillman. Meanwhile, backs rebounding from an ACL tear tend to decline and it doesn't help that Moreno was nabbed for a DUI in February. Following a promising rookie campaign (947 rushing yards, nine total touchdowns), Moreno has missed 12 games in two seasons.

September was not a kind month for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2011. In the season opener on Sept. 11, star safety Eric Berry tore his ACL and was lost for the season and then a week later All-Pro running back Jamaal Charles suffered the same devastating injury in Detroit. Now the goal is to have both players ready by this September. In the case of Charles, the Chiefs have “no concerns whatsoever” about the running back's availability for Week 1, according to ESPN's Chris Mortenson (via PFT). Charles' absence from Kansas City's OTA sessions is purely a precautionary measure and he is expected to be ready to go by training camp.

Chiefs Second Round Pick G Jeff Allen Has Ankle Injury

Kansas City Chiefs guard Jeff Allen did not participate in Thursday's organized team activities and was seen in a walking boot. Coach Romeo Crennel said Allen has an ankle injury. The presence of the boot usually means a high ankle sprain, and such an injury could mean Allen is finished for the off season practices. The Chiefs are counting on Allen to be their first guard off the bench, and he is probably an eventual successor to starter Ryan Lilja at left guard.

Chiefs Plan To Sit RB Jamaal Charles Until Training Camp

The Kansas City Chiefs are taking no chances when it comes to running back Jamaal Charles and his surgically repaired knee. Charles has yet to take part in any of the team’s OTA practices and will most likely will not be joining them until training camp. Head coach Romeo Crennel said he didn’t believe he would be cleared by doctors to play before off-season practice concludes. “We’re going to do everything we can to get them as healthy as they can get before we put them back out there,”. “If they continue to make progress, they should be cleared by camp time.” This is obviously the right move, as they’re counting on him to put together a solid 2012 season. The Chiefs have added Peyton Hillis to their backfield along with rookie Cyrus Grey, so they have some options if he gets hurt, none that you’d feel comfortable using as a featured back.

HBO Plans To Have 'Hard Knocks' Team By June 1

HBO plans to have an NFL team in place for this year's edition of "Hard Knocks" by June 1, according to Michael Shain of the New York Post but thus far, finding a willing participant to appear in the popular program has been difficult. The Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins reportedly have either declined offers or informed HBO and NFL Films that they're not interested in opening their doors to camera crews. The New York Jets, who had a memorable run in the latest edition during 2010 training camp, haven't ruled out a return gig, though that seems unlikely considering how they're planning to keep the focus on football after a disappointing 8-8 season in 2011. The only team that has openly lobbied to appear is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Paranoia about letting camera crews into their facility is probably the driving force preventing the network and NFL Films finding a subject, but Shain reports that part of the struggle is the absence of NFL Films President Steve Sabol, who is battling brain cancer. "Without him going out to the teams twisting arms, it's been hard," a source tells Shain. "Nobody would say 'no' to Sabol."

An NFLPA source said that the union was "strong-armed" into the agreement because the salary cap would have been set at a league-wide $113 million per team instead of $120 million.

On Tuesday, Thomas touched on his injury history, saying that losing weight might be the key to him staying on the field for 16 games. "I actually trimmed down a little to 228," he told the Denver Post. "I played 232 last year. I want to play at 222."

Chargers QB Philip Rivers Supports RB LaDainian Tomlinson Reunion

While we wouldn't call it a full-fledged "movement" quite yet, a potential reunion between the Chargers and LaDainian Tomlinson has become a topic of conversation in San Diego the last few days. First came the huge reception for Tomlinson at the celebration of Junior Seau's life. Then came a column from Jay Paris in the North County Times where Paris pleads with GM A.J. Smith to "swallow his pride" and sign Tomlinson, the Chargers, after all, need a third down back, this almost makes sense. Last came an interview with Philip Rivers on XEPRS-AM in San Diego where he was asked about Tomlinson. "I love LT and all that he brought and meant to us when he was here. I don’t know if that is being considered or that’s even an option, but I wouldn’t have any objection to it whatsoever," Rivers said via SportsRadioInterviews.com. The Chargers could use a third down back, but there are other options out there and (Can someone give Justin Forsett a job already?) Tomlinson brings some baggage to the locker room, and has even more baggage with the front office.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain, who was sentenced to 180 days in jail over an assault incident in Alabama, issued an apology of sorts on Tuesday with a prepared statement that lasted 35 seconds, according to Comcast Bay Area. The statement text read as follows: "I'm aware of the bad publicity that I've given the Raiders. After talking to Coach (Dennis) Allen, I have the support of the Raiders, my teammates, as well as the coaching staff. I apologize for the bad publicity that's been put out there. But it is a legal process and I can't talk much about it, but I think in due time the Raiders and the Raiders fans that are out there will see it all come to an end. It is what it is; I can't really talk much about it but it will be resolved in the near future." McClain did not answer any questions following the statement he read.

San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem Participating Fully In OTAs

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said that wide receiver Robert Meachem, who had his right knee scope earlier in the offseason, is participating fully in the team’s offseason workouts. “Oh yeah, he looks real good,” Rivers said. “He’s running around and picking up the offense super fast.” Rivers added, “Meachem is learning new stuff, but now we are getting to where we call plays and breaking the huddle and going and going and going. This looks like we have been together for awhile and that’s what you want and certainly we are not there yet. It has been great, but these guys are different from what we have had. … it’s been fun to throw to them.” The Chargers acquired Meachem in free agency after spending five seasons with the New Orleans Saints, who took him with the twenty-seventh overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

His passes were hitting receivers in stride and right between the numbers, not skipping off the ground or whizzing behind their heads like so many of Tim Tebow's. The Denver Broncos got their first real taste of Peyton Manning on Monday with a spirited, fast-paced workout, the four-time MVP's first full practice in more than 16 months. "It felt good to be out there. It's been a while for me," Manning said. "It's been about a year and a-half since I've been in uniform, been in an organized practice. So, it felt good to be out there. And it will be a good film to study." Monday also was the first chance for the media to get a look at the progress Manning has made since a series of neck operations sidelined him all of last season and led to his release from the Indianapolis Colts. And Manning looked great, showing zip and accuracy on his passes, comfort under center, complete command of his offense and no ill effects from the nerve injury that caused weakness in his throwing arm. "Man, it feels good to know he's going to be on my side because what I saw today, he's going to give us some good work," star cornerback Champ Bailey said. "And we might not see a quarterback like that all year."
