Chiefs Might Not Be Able To Afford To Keep CB Brandon Carr

Earlier this week, The Sports Xchange had a column citing seven pending unrestricted free agents who might be difficult to re-sign because their incumbent franchises had already invested huge contracts in players at the same position. Add another: Four-year veteran cornerback Brandon Carr of Kansas City could be a victim of the six-year, $49.4 million extension the Chiefs awarded fellow corner Brandon Flowers in September. Carr is only 25 years old, registered a career-best four interceptions in 2011 and will be near the top of a deep cornerback class in free agency.

Raiders Will Pay DT Richard Seymour His $7.5 Million Roster Bonus

By being on the roster on the fifth day of the 2012 waiver wire period, Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour's base salary for 2012 is now fully guaranteed, a league source has confirmed on Saturday. Seymour signed a two-year, $30 million contract on February 25, 2011, a deal that included a fully guaranteed $7.5 million 2012 roster bonus -- which was prorated over two seasons, but comes due on March 17 -- and fully guaranteed $15 million base salary in 2011. Seymour restructured that contract after the lockout, adding three years and lowering his $15 million salary to $910,000 and receiving a $14.09 million bonus that was prorated over five seasons. Barring another restructure, Seymour is scheduled to earn $7.5 million in base salary in 2012. The final three years and $22.5 million are voidable by Seymour being on the roster five days after Super Bowl XLVI.

Raiders To Use Franchise Tag On SS Tyvon Branch?

The shakeup of the Oakland defense began earlier this week, with general manager Reggie McKenzie lopping off cornerback Sanford Routt, arguably one of the NFL's most overpaid players. There are doubtless more changes to come on a unit that one of the club's various consultants after the death of Al Davis criticized sharply and noted was in need of talent, but the Raiders will attempt to hang on to four-year veteran strong safety Tyvon Branch. There is, in fact, a possibility the Raiders could use the franchise marker on Branch, a former fourth-round draft pick (2008) who has started all 16 games each of the past three seasons, after playing mostly as a special-teams guy as a rookie. McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen covet toughness in the secondary, and Branch provides it. He has only three career interceptions, but is solid in run support, and has averaged 112.3 tackles in his three years as a starter.

Less than one year ago, Al Davis made Stanford Routt one of the cornerstones of the Oakland Raiders defense with a lavish contract that prevented him from reaching free agency. Now, Routt is the first player casualty under the new regime with the Raiders. Routt was released on Thursday just one year into a five-year, $54.5 million contract, ending his seven-year tenure in Oakland as the team heads in a new direction. The move by new general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen signifies a change of approach from when Davis ran the team and was fiercely loyal to players he drafted. After the news conference announcing Allen's hiring on Jan. 30, McKenzie said the Raiders had some contracts that were "out of whack."

Chargers Reportedly Will Try To Re-Sign WR Vincent Jackson

Vincent Jackson represents the biggest name on an impressive list of wide receivers who could become free agents in March if he actually reaches free agency. Jackson has maintained his preference is to stay in San Diego despite a relationship with the front office that has been acrimonious in the past. The Chargers aren’t expected to use the franchise tag on Jackson and sound open to trying to work out a long-term deal. “I’m told by people in San Diego they’re going to do everything in their power to sign him, but this is going to be expensive,” NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi told “NFL Total Access” on Thursday. “There are a lot of teams that need an outside, big-play receiver.” Looking at what it would take to land Jackson if he reaches free-agent status, Lombardi expects Jackson could exceed $10 million per season over five seasons. That’s nearly identical to the five-year, $50 million he asked the Chargers for in 2010.

Dielman as you may recall, suffered a concussion when he collided with New York Jets linebacker Calvin Pace in October. Immediately following the play, Dielman wobbled and appeared disoriented but remained in the game. On the team's cross-country flight home to San Diego, Dielman suffered a seizure near the end of the flight and was hospitalized.

The Chargers have dropped five straight games after a 4-1 start and are in last place in the AFC West. ESPN NFL analyst Jerry Rice also blamed Turner for the Chargers' collapse this season on SportsCenter Monday. "Norv Turner is one of those coaches that just can’t you over the hump," Rice said. “I played under this guy." The Chargers appear headed to missing the playoffs for a second-straight season.

According to Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star, Chiefs quarterback coach Jim Zorn reportedly gave the team an ultimatum that he be promoted to offensive coordinator. Both Zorn and former Raiders offensive coordinator Al Saunders were interviewed for the OC job in Kansas City but head coach Romeo Crennel instead named Brian Daboll his offensive coordinator this week. Crennel stated that Zorn may have other job opportunities but hopes he decides to stay with the Chiefs. “I hope that Jim stays,” Crennel said. “I know that any time you’re interviewed for the coordinator job, you have hopes of getting it, and it didn’t work out for him here at this time. But I told Jim that I wanted him to stay and hoped that he would stay. And I expect him to stay. I don’t know what else might happen for him, but if nothing happens for him, then I expect him to be there.” Zorn should be glad he still has a job. Many observers felt Chiefs QB Matt Cassel took a substantial step backwards under Zorn's tutelage last season.

Chiefs Announce Brian Daboll As Offensive Coordinator

Brian Daboll has been hired as the Kansas City Chiefs' new offensive coordinator. He replaces the retiring Bill Muir. "Brian is a fine football coach and offensive mind," Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said. “I worked with him when he was a young coach in New England and I am proud of the way his career has developed. We had a very thorough process for this position and it was clear to me that Brian was the right choice. He was coveted by multiple teams and I am glad he will be joining our staff.” Daboll joins the Chiefs after one season in Miami where he held the same position for the Dolphins. In 2011, the Dolphins offense had both a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver for the first time in franchise history. Daboll was the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator for two undistinguished seasons. He has ties to Crennel and Chiefs general manager Scott Piolo from his time as the New England Patriots' receivers coach.
