Colts QB Peyton Manning Working Out At Duke University

Peyton Manning is in Durham, N.C., working out at Duke University, according to one of the Blue Devil football players' Twitter feed. Matt Skura, an offensive lineman for Duke, tweeted that he got to stretch next to Peyton Manning in workouts today. That Manning would go to Duke to work out and recover from his neck surgery is not that big of a surprise since Blue Devils coach David Cutcliffe was his offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee. Cutcliffe was also head coach at Ole Miss when Eli Manning quarterbacked the Rebels.

Former Indianapolis Colts offensive line coach Pete Metzelaars was hired by the Buffalo Bills as the team's tight ends coach Tuesday. Metzelaars, let go by the Colts last month, was asked about quarterback Peyton Manning during his introductory news conference per the Indianapolis Star. Metzelaars said, "The whole offensive structure was built upon what he could do and how he did it. The way his injury took place, there was always kind of the thought that 'Well, he could come back, he might come back, maybe the recovery time is going to be x.' "So we found ourselves kind of holding out hope, 'Well, let's not change everything because there's a chance he's going to come back and when he comes back, then we're going to run it this way.' Unfortunately, he never did come back. "So we got stuck with kind of trying to change in midstream and put some things together, and the people we had trying to do some of the things that Peyton did, even then we cut it down, but obviously they're not Peyton Manning."

In a conference call with Titans season ticket holders today, Titans GM Ruston Webster didn’t sound like a man who’d be desperate to spring if Manning becomes a free agent next month according to John Glennon of the Tennessean. He was quick to praise his current quarterbacks, veteran Matt Hasselbeck and 2011 first-round pick Jake Locker. “Obviously (Manning) is a great player in the league,” Webster said. “But on the flip side of that, we’re excited about our quarterback situation. “I think Matt brought us through a difficult time, especially once we lost Kenny Britt last year, and I think everyone saw glimpses of Jake Locker. We’re really excited about his future, so you know, obviously Peyton is a great player, but we also feel like we’re in good hands.” “We’re very happy with our quarterback situation – what the future holds with Jake and what Matt has done for us,” Webster said. “With any position we’re always looking to get better, so that will always be something we look at. But … we have a lot of places we need to get better. But we do like our quarterback situation and the three guys we have there.”

Peyton Manning is in the middle of a difficult breakup with the Indianapolis Colts, and it appears he's ready to run into the arms of another NFL team. An NFL source says Miami is on the short list of teams Manning would like to play for when/if the Colts release him to avoid paying a $28 million bonus, which is due on March 8. Manning and his wife own a condo on South Beach and a source said they'd love to relocate to South Florida if the fit is right. A second source confirmed Manning's interest in the Dolphins. Playing for the Dolphins would allow Manning to remain in the AFC, and the Colts are on Miami's schedule next season, which is an added bonus.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the Colts have told center Jeff Saturday, a player who was instrumental in helping to end the lockout, that they are willing to give him a front-office job, according to league sources. A second NFL team also has floated the idea of Saturday joining its front office. A front-office job could be tempting to Saturday, who is considered one of the brightest players in the league, but he still has an interest in playing.

Colts QB Peyton Manning Expects To Meet With Jim Irsay This Week

Colts owner Jim Irsay called Peyton Manning today to offer congratulations on Eli’s latest accomplishment. "I told him I would pass that along,’’ Peyton said. "We talked about getting together and I think it will be this week. He just said, ‘I look forward to sitting down with you soon.’ I told him the same thing. I think it will be this week. One thing he and I are not going to do is give a set date, where it’s like a game. We’ll handle it the way it should be handled and go from there.’’ The only set date we have going right now is March 8th. Peyton Manning will be cut prior to that date as the Colts have no intention of paying him $28 million for next season, not when there are still concerns about his arm strength. Yesterday, PFT reported that a source close to Peyton said that No. 18 has no plans to retire, and that he will likely play next year for a team other than the Colts.

The Titans believe they may have found a potential core player in Colin McCarthy. They figured they were going to take it slowly in developing their fourth round pick, but McCarthy, a football junkie, was intent on acclimating quickly. He was at the Titans’ facility when the coaches showed up every morning, he practiced hard and tried to absorb as much as he could from veteran Barrett Ruud. When Ruud missed time with injuries, McCarthy stepped in. He started seven games, showed excellent instincts, and made an impact.

Peyton Manning is willing to structure his contract in a way that could expedite how quickly he is signed if or when the Indianapolis Colts release him according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Manning is completely open to creating a contract in which he would be paid little or no guaranteed money up front and he would have to earn every cent he makes strictly through performance, according to sources. An example of how it would work is that Manning's contract could wind up having a big roster bonus due on the first day of the season, and another big bonus based on the number of games he starts in a season. It is a formula that can be used for the length of the contract, limiting the amount of guaranteed money paid up front and ensuring that Manning would have to play to earn his pay. Manning's open-mindness on the contract will alleviate many of the concerns that teams have about a player facing questions about his arm strength.

Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross Infatuated With Landing QB Peyton Manning?

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins timetable could be tricky, with Peyton Manning expected to be released by March 8, Matt Flynn hitting the open market March 13, and the unknown variable of when Manning’s arm will be strong enough to throw as well as he did before his neck injury. If the Dolphins are led to believe by agent Tom Condon that they’re a serious contender for Manning when he's released – and that his arm should be strong enough by the start of the season – then they are expected to wait as long as necessary on Manning if he doesn't make a decision quickly. That's because owner Stephen Ross is infatuated with the idea of signing him. The Dolphins believe they have a realistic chance of luring Manning, who owns a condo in South Beach and has an affinity for South Florida.

Colts owner Jim Irsay said he was looking for a culture change — and early signs point to a dramatic shift. Former vice chairman Bill Polian and head coach Jim Caldwell were veiled in secrecy in their relationship with the media. Meanwhile, new GM Ryan Grigson and head coach Chuck Pagano have been very gracious with their time thus far. Irsay said at his press conference announcing the departure of the Polians that he wanted the relationship between the team and the media to improve and it has been very positive early under the new regime.

Shahid Khan Wants To Grow Jacksonville, Not Just Jaguars

Many have tabbed new Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan as a savvy businessman who will approach owning the Jaguars in a different manner than Wayne Weaver did. We've already seen it a bit with Khans "bravado" and the announcement that the team will change the primary uniform color and get entirely new Nike jerseys in 2013. It looks like Khan's business mind is going to work for the city of Jacksonville as well and not just for the franchise. "There are a huge amount of decisions made in global centers like London or Hamburg, Germany," Khan said. "Jacksonville is not on their checklist or on their list of cities. They might have Miami or cities with bigger names. If a multinational company is expanding, they need to know Jacksonville is an option," Khan told the Florida-Times Union in Indianapolis on Friday. "So if we are fortunate to be playing a game, the city fathers, the development leaders need to be on the plane selling the city and meeting with some key decision makers. You can have appointments lined up." Khan explained that Jacksonville has a great deep-water port that is underutilized and doesn't have near the activity it did in the 1980's and the 1990's when Khan would make trips to Jacksonville three times a month. He also said when the Jaguars play in Europe, he plans to fly out local economic developers to meet with foreign business leaders.

Former Cowboys and Colts offensive lineman Kurt Vollers has been sentenced to 2-1/2 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to distribute marijuana. U.S. District Judge Sidney Fitzwater sentenced Vollers in federal court in Dallas on Friday, almost two years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to sell more than 100 kilograms of marijuana. He could have received a 40-year prison term. The 31-year-old played for Dallas from 2002-04 and appeared in two games for Indianapolis in 2005. Prosecutors say Vollers helped three other men in delivering marijuana to the Dallas area from January 2006 through May 2008.

Texans Increase Ticket Prices For 2012

The Houston Texans announced that, on average, ticket prices for the 2012 season will increase by 8.5 percent. Ticket prices for the Texans, who have 101 consecutive sellouts, had remained the same over the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The least expensive tickets -- Gridiron Terrace -- will remain at $30. Prices for seats at the "Gridiron" tier will increase by $3 to $5 per seat. The largest increases are for the "Field Level" seats, with the most expensive Prime 1 seats increasing from $120 to $130 while other "Field Level" seats will increase by $7 to $10 per seat. "Our fans have created one of the best home field advantages in the NFL, as anyone who saw the Wild Card game can attest," Texans Senior Vice President of Ticketing and Event Management John Schriever said "We want to continue to make our games accessible to a broad audience while still pricing in a manner that reflects the strong demand for our tickets. Fielding a championship caliber team and delivering a world class experience for our fans requires us to generate revenues that keep pace with our competition."

Chapel Hill police say the son of new Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey is among three former North Carolina athletes arrested for possession of cocaine. Police say Shane Michael Mularkey was among the three arrested. The 21-year-old Mularkey played in all 13 games for the Tar Heels in 2009, but school spokesman Kevin Best said he left the team after the 2010 season. A Jaguars spokesman says the team is aware of the arrest, adding that it is a personal matter and that Mike Mularkey has no comment at this time. Also arrested Friday were 21-year-old Nicole Marie Suarez and 20-year-old Jacob Carl Groeschen.

Jim Tressel Leaves Colts For University Of Akron

Jim Tressel is getting a "second chance" at the school where he started coaching. The former Ohio State coach, who resigned in disgrace last May amid a cash-for-tattoos scandal at the football powerhouse, was hired by Akron on Thursday as vice president of strategic engagement, -- a position newly created for him. Tressel will earn a base salary of $200,000 per year, more than $3 million less than he made during the last of 10 years guiding the Buckeyes. "I feel fortunate that I got this opportunity," Tressel said following a packed news conference unlike any in the school's history. "It's going to be a fun one." In his new position, Tressel, who said he has no interest in coaching in the NFL, will work with Akron's students, alumni and community organizations on a variety of issues. Tressel will not have any direct involvement with the school's athletic department, one of the conditions of the five-year, show-cause sanction he was given by the NCAA following an investigation.
