Ex-NFL QB Quinn Gray To Coach At Jackson High

Jackson High hired former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Quinn Gray. The 30-year-old Gray spent six seasons in the NFL, including the first five (2003-07) with the Jaguars. “It’s truly a privilege and an honor to be part of such a great tradition here at Jackson,” Gray said. “Jackson reminds me of my old high school [Dillard] with its great tradition. The student-athletes here measure up and being able to coach at a school with such a great tradition is a great opportunity for me.” Gray spent last season playing for Hartford in the United Football League after his NFL run ended after a year with Kansas City. “When I retired from football, I automatically wanted to get into coaching,” Gray said. “I had volunteered at several different camps, and when I saw the job posted online, I submitted my resume.”

Lee was sidelined two seasons ago with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament, also dealing with a sprained left knee last season but Lee told Pennsylvania reporters that he's healthy now. He has pending workouts with the Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys and the Atlanta Falcons. “I think I've shown that I can come back from an injury," Lee said. "It's a big concern and it should be. I haven't been healthy for the last two years. But now I think I'm training a little bit differently, kind of gearing more toward the weaknesses in my body, I think I've made some big strides."

The Titans filled a hole at linebacker, where Keith Bulluck is a free agent and is recovering from a torn ACL, by signing well-traveled Will Witherspoon to a three-year, $11 Million deal. Witherspoon should move right in as a starter at outside linebacker. Even if Bulluck were to re-sign with Tennessee, chances are he might not be recovered from his torn ACL in time to start the season.

Texans Owner Bob McNair In Favor Of Changing Overtime Playoff Rules

Texans owner Bob McNair will vote yes when NFL owners cast their ballots to change overtime for playoff games. He doesn't like the sudden-death system that's been in place since 1974. "I'm in favor of changing it," McNair said. "I don't like the prospects of going into overtime, losing a coin flip, and we might not even get the ball." At the NFL spring meetings in Orlando, the competition committee is recommending that overtime be changed in the playoffs to allow each team at least one possession if the team that wins the coin toss kicks a field goal. "They're talking about something that makes sense," McNair said. "I'd be in favor of something like that, where you can't lose by a field goal on the first possession. I like it better if you have a chance to get the ball, too, and a touchdown wins. I'd rather to go ahead and do it, but I'm not opposed to seeing how out it works out in postseason. I think it'll work out fine."

As co-chairman on the NFL Competition Committee, Titans coach Jeff Fisher not only is in favor of changes to playoff overtime rules, he's one of the key minds behind the proposal that owners are scheduled to vote upon at next week's Annual Meeting. This is Fisher's rationale for the change from "sudden death" to a format that tries to give each team the ball at least once. "What we don't want to have happen in the playoffs is a kickoff return, and then a penalty and a field goal, and have the game be over," Fisher said. "What we're proposing has sudden-death qualities throughout it, even at the beginning. Bottom line is that each team will have an opportunity to possess doesn't guarantee a possession."

Titans Officially Land Eagles Restricted Free Agent DE Jason Babin

The Tennessee Titans have officially landed veteran defensive end Jason Babin after the Philadelphia Eagles declined to match the one-year, $1 million offer sheet executed by the Titans on Wednesday. "We're happy our deal with Jason worked out," Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt said in a statement. "He's a high-energy player and a good pass rusher, and he fits what we do very well. He has all offseason to come in and work with Coach (Jim) Washburn and become a part of our rotation at defensive end." Babin was an unrestricted free agent, but a right-of-first-refusal clause was written into his previous contract with the Eagles that gave them one week to match another team's offer and retain his rights. The Eagles notified the NFL office they didn't want to match today, and as a result the deal between the Titans and Babin became binding. "I've been trying not to think about it too much because the Eagles had the right to match the offer, and I didn't know what they'd do," Babin said. "I'm ecstatic right now. I can't wait to get in there, start working out with the team and go through the offseason with Coach Washburn and the other players and coaches there. The style of defense the Titans play, as far as what the defensive line does and the way they want their guys to play, it suits my abilities. They get wide, they come off the ball, they rush the passer, and they're aggressive. To me, it's just a natural fit." Added Titans coach Jeff Fisher: "Jason is one of those guys that has a knack of getting to the quarterback. He's not an every-down player, but he'll play a lot of snaps for us. With a real good off-season and working with Coach Washburn, I think he has a real good chance to get to the quarterback, which is important for us."

Alge Crumpler's camp has informed the Tennessee Titans that they've come to an agreement with New England, according to a source.
Alge Crumpler’s time as a Tennessee Titan could soon be over. The unrestricted free agent is believed to be close to an agreement with the New England Patriots, league sources indicated, though no deal is likely to be consummated until sometime next week. The Patriots have been desperate for help at the tight end position, having lost Ben Watson to the Cleveland Browns and releasing Chris Baker this off-season.

Titans Assistant Mike Heimerdinger Calls Out TE Jared Cook

As a rookie, Titans tight end Jared Cook dazzled with his post-draft, training camp and preseason work. His height, speed and athleticism made him look to be an impossible matchup as a route runner, but he suffered an ankle sprain and disappeared. Tennessee got nine catches for 74 yards out of him in 14 games, and the word out of team headquarters was his confidence plummeted and he did nothing to force the Titans to get him on the field. “He needs to become much more consistent week to week if he’s going to play for us,” offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said this week. “He has to be more consistent in everything before he can play.”

Offensive lineman Ryan Lilja, who played in high school at Shawnee Mission Northwest and in college at Kansas State, is coming home after agreeing to terms today on a three-year contract with the Chiefs. It's not only a great football move for the Chiefs, who need Lilja's help on their offensive line. He played on two Super Bowl teams with the Colts, is a tireless worker and, at 28, should have several good seasons left in him.

Texans TE Owen Daniels Won't Rule Out Holding Out For A New Deal

After holding out for part of voluntary OTAs last offseason because of his frustration with the lack of what he considered a serious long-term contract offer from the team, tight end Owen Daniels told Pro Football Weekly talks appear to be moving in the right direction with the Texans and he's hoping to avoid skipping practices this year. The lack of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement kept Daniels from becoming an unrestricted free agent, and the Texans placed the highest possible restricted tender on him, meaning a team would have to give up both a first-round pick and a third-rounder if they signed him to an offer sheet and the Texans opted not to match the offer. "The Texans did a good job of protecting themselves," Daniels said. "It was a good sign that they put that max tender on me. It shows that they want me around. If they didn't care about losing me or potentially wanted to trade me I think they would've tendered me at a lower amount. I think that's a positive thing for sure. f they would've put that lower tender on me, I would've been really confused. It would have been clear at that point that they weren't tied to me and didn't need me around. It makes me feel important that they need me in this offense. That's the way I looked at it. I wasn't trying to find any negatives in it." He will likely sign his one-year tender this summer and hope the groundwork is laid for him to sign a long-term deal early next season, but while Daniels said he would strongly prefer not to hold out this summer, he isn't completely ruling it out. "I guess anything's a possibility, but I really don't want to do that," he said. "I really, really don't want to do that. I want to be there with the guys. I don't want to sit out when everyone else is doing their thing. I'm sure there are a lot of people that have considered not showing up or making a fuss about it, but I don't want to be the guy to do that if it's not necessary. It would have to be an extreme, extreme situation for me not to show up. If things got completely unreasonable, but even then I might just be like, 'Well, I'll go to work anyway and I'll do my thing and hopefully that will show them that I'm serious.' It's weird talking about 'Will you hold out, will you not hold out?' I definitely don't want to. You can just never say never."
