Georgia authorities are investigating a 20-year-old college student's allegation that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, 28, sexually assaulted her in a restroom of a nightclub during a night of bar-hopping in Milledgeville, a small town that's home to Georgia College & State University. The National Football League is "following developments" in Roethlisberger's legal situation, a spokesperson said. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has taken a hard line with players who tarnish the league's image, but the league rarely suspends a player unless he is convicted of a crime.

Steelers President Art Rooney said he will allow the investigation of sexual assault charges against quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to finish before the team decides what direction it might take on the matter. While Rooney declined to discuss the situation, he did say the team has time on its side before it looks at making any personnel moves to bring in a quarterback. "I mean, look that's one of the things, we do have a little bit of luxury of time," Rooney said this afternoon during an interview at Steelers offices, his first public comments since he issued a statement last week. "If we were at a different point in the year we may have to be thinking and doing something different. But at the moment, I think we're in a situation we're going to let this investigation play out and then go from there." Police in Milledgeville, Ga., are investigating an accusation brought by a 20-year-old woman who said Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her in the bathroom of a club in the early morning hours of March 5.

The criminal defense investigator hired by the team of lawyers representing Ben Roethlisberger after an allegation that he sexually assaulted a college student says he expects his investigation to wrap up "in the next couple of weeks." Charles Mittlestadt told ESPN's Kelly Naqi in a phone interview that he expects "the bulk of our investigation" to be completed in that timeframe. "After that, we would be pursuing the odd lead here or there and revisiting aspects of our investigation that might require some more clarity," Mittelstadt told Naqi. Georgia police are investigating an allegation brought by a 20-year-old college student that she was sexually assaulted by Roethlisberger, 28, in a Milledgeville, Ga., bar. Roethlisberger's attorney, Ed Garland, has said the two-time Super Bowl winner for the Pittsburgh Steelers has committed no crime.

Scratch the Steelers as possible candidates to open the NFL season against Super Bowl champion New Orleans Sept. 9 in the Superdome. There has been speculation the NFL might pit the past two Super Bowl winners in the first game traditionally held in the city of the current champion on Thursday night of what is called Kickoff Weekend. But Steelers president Art Rooney II said he expects the Steelers to open the season at home Sept. 12 because of scheduling conflicts with their neighbors, the Pirates. "We won't be playing in New Orleans," Rooney declared this afternoon. "We have to be home that weekend because of the baseball schedule. Unless they wanted to play us away three weeks in a row, and I don't think they'll do that."

Ravens wide receiver Marcus Smith believes the knee injury that ended his 2009 campaign before it even started will be 100 percent by training camp. Energized by two major additions to the receiving corps, with sights of first earning a special teams spot, Smith is doing everything he can to get back on the field as soon as possible. "I'm not cleared to sprint or anything, but I'm comfortable running," Smith said. "The strength is there, but it's sometimes sore after a long day of working out. Other than that, it's feeling really good. The lateral movement and explosion are the main things that I have to regain. I can't dunk a basketball yet, and I said I won't really be back until I can do that. It's come a long way over the last six weeks." Smith knows a rise up the depth chart won't be easy considering the arrival of Anquan Boldin and Donte' Stallworth, but he only worries about what he can do to get back on the field. "I think the Ravens are trying to win, it's that simple," said Smith. "I can't get mad at that. I think both Stallworth and Anquan Boldin will contribute to the Ravens and make us better. I really believe that. But at the same time, it's a direct challenge to me. Coming off an injury, I have to gain my spot back. I have to prove to myself and the team that I can come back better than ever. I've got five months until training camp, so my main goal is coming in to training camp in shape and even more fit than I was last year."

Police in Georgia have sought to interview Andrea McNulty, the woman who accused Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger of rape in a Nevada civil suit last year, her attorney said Wednesday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted an unidentified 20-year-old college student on the morning of March 5. Roethlisberger, through his attorney, has denied the accusation. KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh reported that attorney Calvin Dunlap, who represents McNulty, said that Georgia authorities sought to interview his client and Dunlap told the station he only allows clients with pending litigation to discuss cases under extraordinary scenarios. "They need information from us, and frankly we need information from them, so I will make a decision on how to proceed as the need arises," Dunlap told KDKA.

The former Carolina Panthers quarterback says he signed a two-year contract with the Cleveland Browns because of their strong finish following a struggling start last year, plus the addition of Mike Holmgren as team president. Delhomme, 35, chose the Browns over his hometown New Orleans Saints, where he would have been a backup to Drew Brees.

Ravens CB Fabian Washington Expects To Be Back By Training Camp

Ravens cornerback Fabian Washington expects to be ready for the start of training camp. Washington is coming off a season-ending knee injury after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Nov. 22 when he lowered his shoulder in an attempt to force Indianapolis Colts running back Joseph Addai out of bounds. He was lifting weights this week when the team began its voluntary offseason conditioning program. “The schedule is for me to be ready for training camp and we’re definitely on schedule for that,” Washington told the Ravens. “Right now, I’m not close. But I think by training camp, I’ll be ready to rock and roll.”

Bengals Looking To Re-Sign Veteran TE Reggie Kelly

The Bengals would like to re-sign tight end Reggie Kelly, who ruptured his left Achilles' tendon in 2009, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Cincinnati may also target a tight end in the draft though, and are believed to have Jermaine Gresham (Oklahoma) and Rob Gronkowski (Arizona) on their radar. They drafted Chase Coffman out of Missouri last season, but were displeased with his poor blocking skills as a rookie even though he has strong upside as a pass-catcher.

Steelers LB Larry Foote Thankful He Only Signed For One Year In Detroit

Despite all the hugs and kisses when he arrived in Detroit last season, Larry Foote let his feelings about the Lions be known when he recently signed a three-year deal with his original team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. "You can't really explain it until you go through it," he said. "You talk about dog days. Those were dog days, especially being a competitive person and losing. But I made some good relationships and it was good going home playing there. I'm just glad I'm back and thank God I didn't sign a longer deal there." Foote spent his previous seven years with the Pittsburgh Steelers - winning two Super Bowl rings - and was part of a well-tuned machine in which Foote knew exactly where he needed to be at all times.
