Steelers TE Weslye Saunders Suspended First Four Games Of 2012 Season

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Weslye Saunders has been suspended for the first four games of the 2012 season, Aaron Wilson of Scout.com reports. Which policy Saunders violated to earn the suspension was not disclosed. Saunders was suspended for his final college season at South Carolina for making improper contact with agents. A foot injury hampered Saunders at last year's Combine and caused him to undrafted in April's draft. Saunders will eligible to participate in the team's off-season workout program, including OTAs and mini-camps, and can participate in training camp and the preseason, if Saunders makes the 53-man roster, he will have to sit out the first four games of the season, which would cost him $109,412 of his $465,000 base salary.

Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel offers some insight into Ricky Williams' abrupt retirement from football. Williams reportedly received a text from Bill Parcells stating, "Don't chase this thing too long. You can contribute in other ways." Apparently Williams' retirement announcement caught the Ravens by surprise and leaves their running back corps in flux. Williams still looked good when he got his opportunities this year and it would not be a surprise, given his history, if he changes his mind again and unretires.

Cleveland Browns Stadium To Get $5.8M In Improvements

Cleveland's City Council approved a $5.8 million lump sum for repairs to Cleveland Browns Stadium on on Monday, Thomas Ott of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports. The Browns plan to spend $1.2 million for refurbishing club seats, $750,000 to waterproof the concrete under those seats with most of the money going to for replacement and repair concrete on interior ramps and walkways and a plaza outside the stadium. The city, which owns the stadium, is only required to provide $850,000 per year for stadium improvements. The sum comes from the city's sin tax on alcohol and tobacco sales and the agreement reached Monday frees the city from repair obligations for the next seven years. "We own Cleveland Browns Stadium," Ken Silliman, Mayor Frank Jackson's Chief of Staff, said on Monday. "When you own a building and a few years go by, it starts to develop needs. It's just like when you own a home."

Bengals RB coach Jim Anderson wants to see Bernard Scott become more of an all-around back. "He has that versatility, so we just expect for him to work on it," Anderson told PFW at the Senior Bowl. "We're going to work on it and everything so that he can be more of the total package." Scott carried 112 times for 380 yards and caught 13 passes for 38 yards in 2011, his third NFL season. Overall, Scott received nearly twice as many touches as he did the previous season. The potential for Scott to receive even more work in 2012 is very apparent with starter Cedric Benson slated to be an unrestricted free agent. Should Benson depart, Scott will be the top option at tailback, though Cincinnati would figure to add another veteran and/or a rookie via the draft to bolster the depth at the position.

Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco Literally Thanked Bengals For Trading Him

Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco is soaking up the Super Bowl spotlight even though he's unlikely to be a leading man Sunday. Though No. 85 is now a role player, he's grateful for the opportunity to win his first ring and appreciates the Bengals' role in getting him here. "I sent everyone (in Cincinnati) a letter, a thank you note. I think that's the best I can do. Everybody who had anything to do with me being there, I hope they have it framed," Ochocinco said Wednesday of his former team, which traded him after the lockout following a 10-year stay when he broke most of the Bengals' career receiving records. "That's just the way it goes. (Owner) Mike (Brown) was good to me. The city was good to me. The media, we had our ups and downs. I made it fun. The fans were epic for 10 straight years. Of course, I had my riffs and raffs. Like any human being I'm not perfect. Other than that, there's nothing bad I can actually say, period."

For the third straight season, the Baltimore Ravens will not be raising tickets prices for the upcoming season, president Dick Cass announced on Friday. "We know that our fans are continuing to be stretched financially to pay for season tickets," Cass said. "While the economy is improving, it’s still not strong." The Ravens raised ticket prices in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 and have sold out every game since 1998. In 2012, the Ravens will host the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants in addition to their three AFC North opponents.

WR Hines Ward Wants To Remain With Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward has let head coach Mike Tomlin and president Art Rooney II know that he wants to remain with the team in 2012, Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "I just wanted to let them know I want to be here, I want to play," said Ward. "I have two years on my contact. I know I have to restructure, but, under the circumstances, I think I can still play football. Ward turns 36 next month and is coming off a season where he started nine of 15 games, catching 46 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns. All of those numbers were Ward's lowest totals since his rookie season as Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown emerged as the team's top receivers, with Emmanuel Sanders supplanting Ward as the No. 3. "We have so many issues, we're $30 million over the cap," Ward said. "We have to figure a way to get that down. My cap number is not huge if I restructure [$4 million in salary]. There's like 10 other guys they have to get. "They really didn't say [definitively]. It wasn't good, it wasn't bad. We were just talking." Ward is due $4 million in base salary and has a $4.61 million cap number. Releasing him would clear $3.39 million from the salary cap.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said at his end-of-the-season press conference that the team is “assuming” 33-year-old safety Ed Reed will return to the team, according to BaltimoreRavens.com. “Ed doesn’t give definitive answers,” Bisciotti said. “We’re assuming he’s going to be back. He’s under contract and I think he still has the desire to play.” Reed is signed through the end of next season. The 10-year veteran has dealt with a slew of injuries the last few seasons, missing four games in 2009 and six games last season. This year, he played through neck, shoulder and ankle injuries but did not miss a game, according to BaltimoreRavens.com. Reed finished the season with 52 tackles, one sack and three interceptions and was named to his eighth Pro Bowl. “We didn’t get that same proclamation we got from Ray [Lewis],” Bisciotti said.

Ravens Not Planning On Re-Signing OG Ben Grubbs?

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti and GM Ozzie Newsome discussed some of the team’s plans for the offseason during today’s press conference. One player who may not be back next season is G Ben Grubbs. Bisciotti and Newsome weren’t very optimistic about the idea of retaining Grubbs and even said that they ”could make no guarantees” about him returning next season, via the Baltimore Sun. Baltimore has a number of key free agents to address and last year they re-signed G Marshal Yanda to a pretty sizable contract which makes it very unlikely that they’ll be able to do the same for Grubbs this season. He will certainly find a lot interest on the open market and Cowboys have already been reported to be considering upgrades at the position.

Ravens Will Fight To Keep RB Ray Rice In Baltimore

Ravens running back Ray Rice is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but the organization’s brass made it clear Wednesday that they have no intentions of letting him walk away according to Garrett Downing of BaltimoreRavens.com. The Ravens’ hope is to get Rice signed to a new long-term contract in the next few months, before the team has to use the franchise tag. “We would like to have a deal done with Ray before we get have to put the tag on him,” General Manager Ozzie Newsome said Wednesday at the team’s season-ending press conference. The Ravens can start negotiating a new deal with Rice at any point, but if they aren’t able to agree to new contract terms with him, then the franchise tag will be put to use. “Ray is an unrestricted free agent, so obviously the franchise mechanism has to come into play,” team Owner Steve Bisciotti said.
