Some Dolphins Defensive Players Are Unhappy About Switch To 4-3 Defense

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, some of the Dolphins' defensive players are upset are upset at the prospect of switching to a 4-3 defense as they feel their skills are more suited to a 3-4. The Dolphins would likely play Karlos Dansby as middle linebacker in the 4-3, although the team will prbably alternate the 4-3 and 3-4 as they did at times last year. If the Dolphins are serious about Peyton Manning, they will have to be judicious in their defensive free-agent signings or get creative in obtaining more cap space, it is unlikely they will franchise defensive lineman Paul Soliai, as that would take up all their cap space. Though they suggest they will make an effort to re-sign Kendall Langford, keeping him is iffy at best. They could re-allocate that money on a pass-rusher to play opposite Cameron Wake in a 4-3. Among 4-3 ends, the most skilled available would be Detroit’s Cliff Avril (11 sacks), Atlanta’s John Abraham (9.5 sacks), New England’s Andre Carter (10 sacks in 14 games) and the Colts’ Robert Mathis (9.5 sacks). Arizona and former UM standout Calais Campbell (eight sacks) is more of a 3-4 defensive end.

Patriots QB Tom Brady Aggravated His Shoulder Sprain In Super Bowl

The Patriots got a scare in Super Bowl XLVI when Tom Brady was driven into the turf by Giants defensive end Justin Tuck midway through the third quarter. Brady’s left shoulder hit against Lucas Oil Field's artificial surface, raising concerns that the shoulder had been reinjured. He missed practice time before the AFC title game against the Ravens because of soreness. The hit, in fact, aggravated a sprain that Brady had suffered earlier in the season, SN correspondent Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports. The aggravation did not lead to a major injury, though, and it is not believed that Brady will need to deal with it much in the offseason, according to the Herald.

Ex-Patriot Rodney Harrison Calls Out TE Rob Gronkowski

Former Patriot safety Rodney Harrison had some tough words for tight end Rob Gronkowski Wednesday, telling ESPNChicago Radio 1000 that Gronkowski "disrespected himself" by dancing and taking off his shirt at the team's postgame party following the Super Bowl XLVI loss to the Giants. "I guarantee you this, if Willie McGinest, Tedy Bruschi, Larry Izzo, Richard Seymour or myself had been at that party, (Gronkowski) probably would have got his head rung," said Harrison, who admitted he has not seen the video or photos of Gronkowski dancing at the party. "There's no reason for that to happen." "When we lost the Super Bowl, any of my Super Bowl losses, I was so devastated the last thing I ever wanted to do was party, let alone dance or take off your shirt," he added. "It's just immaturity. It's not right. He made a mistake and I'm sure he feels absolutely stupid about it at this point. There's a time and place for everything." When told that veteran Patriots offensive lineman Matt Light was also photographed with his shirt off, Harrison said he was "surprised." To Harrison, it's the veteran leadership on the team that should have ensured something like that didn't happen. "The leadership has to step up and someone has to pull (Gronkowski) to the side and say 'Look young man, this is inappropriate, this is not the time nor the place. You need to grow up,'" Harrison said. "And that's what it comes down to. I like this kid. I think he's a good kid, works hard, is unselfish. But he made a mistake ..."There's a certain way of representing yourself and your family and that's not the right way."

Jets right tackle Wayne Hunter's$2.45 million base salary became guaranteed Wednesday according to Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger. The Jets had written a loophole in Hunter's 2011 contract which would have gotten them out of guaranteeing his salary if they released him on the Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday after the Superbowl. Since they took no action, Hunter gets the money. The 30-year-old Hunter was a media whipping boy in his first year as a starter. Nevertheless, given his salary it would appear the Jets plan to make him a starter again in 2012.

Patriots Likely To Tender QB Brian Hoyer

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that the Patriots are likely to tender restricted free agent QB Brian Hoyer at least at the 2nd round level in March. The Patriots are stacked at the quarterback position with future Hall-of-Famer Tom Brady and 2010 3rd-round pick Ryan Mallett but Bill Belichek considers Hoyer an asset and will not let lose him without receiving anything in return. There will likely be some interest in Hoyer around the league but chances are he will remain a Patriot until he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2013.

The Jets made good on that promise Wednesday morning, and their wallet is a lot lighter because of it. The New York Post reported that Holmes was due $7.5 million of his $11 million 2013 salary if he remained on the Jets' roster Wednesday morning. The newspaper also reported the Jets now owe Holmes $15.25 million guaranteed overall Holmes finished the 2011 season with 51 receptions for 654 yards with eight touchdowns. Despite the Jets assertion's that Holmes' future was safe with the Jets, it still seemed like the wideout could have been on his way out the door after his acrimonious end to the regular season, Holmes was pulled from the game during the fourth quarter of the Jets' final loss of the season, and a number of teammates called his attitude into question after the game.

Faulk was approached by a reporter after the game and politely said that it wasn't the right time to talk about his plans. He didn't play in Super Bowl XLVI and because of that, he said there wasn't much to say in the aftermath of the game. Faulk had a challenging season after he returned on a one-year contract. He opened on the physically unable to perform list, and when he was activated, he was thrown right into the mix by playing 39 of 58 snaps in an Oct. 30 loss to the Steelers.

Wes Welker, who dropped what could have been a game-clinching catch, held back tears as he recalled the moment. Tom Brady sat alone at his locker for the better part of an hour before even moving. Brandon Spikes tweeted about “Suicidal Thoughts.” Bill Belichick was even more terse than usual. It was a depressing scene, but amid it all, tight end Rob Gronkowski and left tackle Matt Light were getting ready to party according to CBSBoston.com.

Brandon Spikes tweeted about “Suicidal Thoughts.” Bill Belichick was even more terse than usual. It was a depressing scene, but amid it all, tight end Rob Gronkowski and left tackle Matt Light were getting ready to party according to CBSBoston.com.

Patriots WR Deion Branch Hopes Team Will Re-Sign Him

Deion Branch's season didn't end the way he wanted it with the New England Patriots losing in the Super Bowl to the New York Giants Sunday night. Branch is hoping the ending of his career will have his preferred outcome - as a Patriot for at least one more year, according to ESPNBoston.com. "This is where I want to be, this is where I want to retire," he said. "This is why I came back, for the opportunity to play in this game. I'm pretty sure I will be here in this position next year." Branch, an 11-year veteran, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, and the receiver position would appear to be in flux in New England, where the lack of a true deep threat was exposed by the Giants defense Sunday night.

The frustrations of another Super Bowl loss spilled over for Gisele Bundchen as she left the luxury suites of Lucas Oil Stadium after her husband Tom Brady and the Patriots fell to Eli Manning and the Giants, 21-17, in Super Bowl XLVI Sunday night. According to WEEI in Boston, while making her way toward the elevator, Giants fans were harassing the supermodel, yelling, “Eli rules, Eli owns your husband.” She responded to her entourage. “You [need] to catch the ball when you’re supposed to catch the ball. My husband cannot [expletive] throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time,” she said in a video. “I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times.”

Peyton Manning is in the middle of a difficult breakup with the Indianapolis Colts, and it appears he's ready to run into the arms of another NFL team. An NFL source says Miami is on the short list of teams Manning would like to play for when/if the Colts release him to avoid paying a $28 million bonus, which is due on March 8. Manning and his wife own a condo on South Beach and a source said they'd love to relocate to South Florida if the fit is right. A second source confirmed Manning's interest in the Dolphins. Playing for the Dolphins would allow Manning to remain in the AFC, and the Colts are on Miami's schedule next season, which is an added bonus.
