49ers quarterback Alex Smith made some comments about Cam Newton that Panthers linebacker Jon Beason didn't appreciate. "This is the honest truth: I could absolutely care less on yards per game," Smith said Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "I think that's a totally overblown stat. Because if you're losing games in the second half, guess what? You're like the Carolina Panthers and you're going no-huddle the entire second half and, yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games, that's great. You're not winning, though." Beason then took to twitter to defend his quarterback writing, "Alex smith, don't hate on Cam Bc your stats would've gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran.Truth b told..That's after a 13-3 yr." 49ers middle linebacker Patrick Willis tweeted Friday night, "Wins are Wins I stand with My Qb Alex Smith and all my teammates. I can't wait for the season."

HBO Plans To Have 'Hard Knocks' Team By June 1

HBO plans to have an NFL team in place for this year's edition of "Hard Knocks" by June 1, according to Michael Shain of the New York Post but thus far, finding a willing participant to appear in the popular program has been difficult. The Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins reportedly have either declined offers or informed HBO and NFL Films that they're not interested in opening their doors to camera crews. The New York Jets, who had a memorable run in the latest edition during 2010 training camp, haven't ruled out a return gig, though that seems unlikely considering how they're planning to keep the focus on football after a disappointing 8-8 season in 2011. The only team that has openly lobbied to appear is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Paranoia about letting camera crews into their facility is probably the driving force preventing the network and NFL Films finding a subject, but Shain reports that part of the struggle is the absence of NFL Films President Steve Sabol, who is battling brain cancer. "Without him going out to the teams twisting arms, it's been hard," a source tells Shain. "Nobody would say 'no' to Sabol."

49ers Punter Andy Lee Rewarded With Six-Year Contract Extension

Andy Lee, who averaged a NFL record 44.0 net yards per punt last season, has agreed to a contract extension, CSN Bay Area first reported Wednesday morning. Lee earned first-team AP All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in his eighth season out of Pittsburgh, he ranks second in NFL history with both a net average of 38.9 yards per punt and a gross average of 45.7 yards per punt. Not only did Lee lead the league last season in net average (44.0, ahead of the Saints’ Thomas Morstead at 43.1) and gross average (50.9, ahead of the Raiders’ Shane Lechler at 50.8), but he also held on every one of David Akers’ field-goal and point-after attempts. Akers set a league record in field-goals made (44), field-goals attempted (52) and points by a kicker (166). Lee is the 49ers’all-time leader in punting yards (33,069) and gross average (45.7). He started last season with the second-highest punting average ever in an NFL game, booming five punts for a net average of 54.2 yards, in an exhibition game against the Raiders, Lee injured his hip when he fell on it awkwardly after a botched field-goal attempt.

49ers WR Kyle Williams Is Ready To Rebound

San Francisco 49ers wideout Kyle Williams has patiently waited for a chance to erase the memories of January, when his two fumbled punt returns contributed to the team's loss in the NFC Championship Game. It's unfair to blame Williams for a game the New York Giants rightfully won, but this happens in football. Thousands of decisions, movements and reactions are boiled down to highlights for mass consumption, the easy, group response is to point to Williams' gaffes late in the game as the only factor, but the team itself doesn't look at the game through that lens. Williams is still on the roster and hungry to build on an otherwise productive second season. "It's not like you want to forget about something like that," Williams told Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee. "You want to build off of that, learn from it, take it as a mistake and build off it, you know? It was a tough time, obviously, for me and for the whole team. But the way these guys had my back, they continue to have my back. That, coupled with the work ethic, has just kind of been a good therapy for me. So I've just been going hard, and I'm ready to go. I'm ready to go now." Last season's playoff performance won't decide Williams' spot on the roster, at least not directly, but a restocked receiving corps might, since the conference title game, the 49ers have added Mario Manningham, rookie A.J. Jenkins and Randy Moss and Williams has responded the only way he knows how:"I haven't really stopped," Williams said. "Ever since a week after that last game, I've been going. There was no break and I've been going full-throttle since then. I feel great."

Alex Boone Front-Runner At Right Guard For 49ers

Entering the month of May, the consensus in the Bay Area seemed to be that a wide-open battle would likely be taking place to find a replacement at right guard for Adam Snyder, who signed with the division-rival Cardinals. But the way we hear it, it appears the job is now Alex Boone’s to lose. “He’s with the starting group now, and it looks like they are going to see whether or not he can make the transition,” a daily team observer said of Boone, who had turned himself into an extremely serviceable backup swing tackle after entering the league out of Ohio State as an undisciplined and out-of-shape undrafted rookie. “At 6-8 with long arms, he seems like the prototypical tackle. But he plays real low and his foot speed isn’t real great, which could make him better-suited for guard.”

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said three-year veteran Michael Crabtree has the best hands he has ever seen according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayarea.com. Marvin Harrison was his favorite target in Harbaugh's last two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, Jerry Rice and Tim Brown were with the Raiders during Harbaugh's two seasons in Oakland as an assistant. There is no denying Crabtree has very good hands. A large number of his team-leading 72 receptions last season involved beyond-routine efforts to secure the catch, but there's also no hiding from the fact that he had his problems in the playoffs. Harbaugh did not say Crabtree was the best receiver he has ever seen -- only that he has the best hands.

San Francisco linebacker Aldon Smith told the Sacramento Bee that the 49ers weren't targeting Ben Roethlisberger's injured ankle in a Dec. 19 game. "Our goal was to win the game," said Smith, who had 2.5 sacks that game. "We don't go out and talk about hurting other players, their ankles, or injuries or any of that. We were going out to win the game. The quarterback, he controls the game. So if he got hit, it happens." While no one expected any of the 49ers to admit they went after Roethlisberger's ankle, Smith's defense is supported by the research done by my NFC West colleague Mike Sando, who found no evidence of it when he reviewed every Steelers offensive play from that game. Roethlisberger never accused the 49ers of putting a bounty on him, but the Steelers quarterback did suggest this month that San Francisco was targeting his injured ankle. When asked about the last time he felt a team was going after his knees, ankles or head, Roethlisberger said on "The Dan Patrick Show" on May 10: "Um, wow, that's tough. I don't really complain about that stuff, either. But I think when we played San Fran, I felt like there were some things going on, some extra ... " The Sacramento Bee pointed out that the 49ers' defense was penalized three times in that game, and none involved a hit on Roethlisberger.

We aren't sure yet who will appear on HBO's "Hard Knocks" this season, but we have begun to create a lengthy of list of teams that aren't interested in the show. The latest team to make their lack of interest clear was the 49ers on Wednesday night. Owner Jed York confirmed the news on Wednesday evening, according to CSNBayArea.com. FoxSports.com reported last month that the show's producers were possibly interested in the Ravens and 49ers with a Harbaugh brothers theme running through the show. It seemed like a huge long shot considering how closed off to the media the 49ers organization has been under Jim Harbaugh.

It seemed like a huge long shot considering how closed off to the media the 49ers organization has been under Jim Harbaugh.

49ers WR Mario Manningham, RB Brandon Jacobs Skips Giants Super Bowl Ring Ceremony

While their former teammates with the New York Giants were receiving their Super Bowl XLVI rings, current San Francisco 49ers running back Brandon Jacobs and wide receiver Mario Manningham were on a practice field in Santa Clara, California, 3,000 miles away from the festivities. "I think winning a championship is important, not many people have one and not many people have had a chance to play in a Super Bowl," said Jacobs, who was represented at the ceremony by his wife, Kim.. "I respect that, but right now, I'm working towards the same goal with a new team." Jacobs won a pair of Super Bowls with the Giants, but clashed with management over his contract and bristled after losing the starting job to Ahmad Bradshaw. After refusing to accept a pay cut, Jacobs was released and agreed to a one-year contract with the 49ers on March 29, one week after Manningham signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract to switch coasts. "I talk to Mario every day," Jacobs said. "We love being here. The work is something special. I'm glad I'm here with Mario and vice-versa. It's a special thing. This football team, this coaching staff and this whole organization is great. I'm happy to be a part of it and just ready to go." Jacobs and Manningham will face their former teammates on October 14 at Candlestick Park.

The Minnesota Vikings have signed defensive end Nick Reed and tackle Kevin Murphy. Reed, drafted by Seattle in the seventh round in 2009, was invited to the Vikings' rookie mini-camp earlier this month. He played 16 games for the Seahawks as a rookie in 2009. He was out of the league in 2010 and spent parts of last season with Chicago and Tampa Bay. Murphy, a 6-foot-7, 303-pound tackle out of Harvard, went undrafted last month. He signed a free agent deal with San Francisco shortly after the draft but was quickly waived by the 49ers. The Vikings also released offensive tackle Jose Valdez.

LB Darius Fleming Tears ACL At 49ers Minicamp

San Francisco 49ers fifth-round draft pick Darius Fleming tore his anterior cruciate ligament during his first rookie minicamp practice on Friday, according to his agent Andy Simms. That puts his 2012 in serious jeopardy. Fleming, a 6-foot-1, 245-pounder from Notre Dame suffered the injury in a non-contact drill, coming down on his knee awkwardly, he attempted to continue doing drills, but quickly realized his knee was giving out and he had an MRI, which confirmed the injury. Simms said Fleming tore only the ACL, not any other ligaments, which may lead to an uncomplicated recovery. The assumption is that he’ll be on the sidelines for his rookie season, but the 49ers are keeping their options open. Fleming signed his contract the day before the injury, inking a four-year deal worth a reported $2.264 million.

New 49ers Stadium Creating Friction In Bay Area

Some people in Santa Clara are feeling betrayed after ground was broken for the 49ers' new stadium. The team's deal to get out of its Candlestick Park lease has resulted in some concessions with which the team's new hometown. For example, the 49ers and San Francisco have agreed that the team and the city will lead the effort to lure a Super Bowl (preferably the 50th one) to the new venue, leaving Santa Clara out in the cold. "Part of the pitch for doing the stadium was the tremendous revenue that would be generated by a Super Bowl," Santa Clara Councilwoman Jamie McLeod, who opposes the stadium, said. "My assumption is if it's an exclusive partnership between the city of San Francisco and the team to bring the Super Bowl in, then the city of San Francisco will receive most of the benefits."

LaMichael James, Oregon's all-time leading rusher and the 49ers' second-round draft pick, debuted on the 49ers practice field Friday. He didn't flinch at his new surroundings. "He's just got a great look in his eye," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. It's a familiar look to Oregon running backs coach Gary Campbell, who said anyone judging James on his 5-foot-9, 195-pound frame will regret it. "He'll be so determined," Campbell said in a phone interview. "You can't measure the size of his heart or the drive inside him. It'll be difficult to hold him down. He relishes challenges." James had the slightest build among all 49ers rookies who reported for their three-day minicamp. But while some, including first-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins, gasped for air during the morning practice, James didn't. "Everything's quick-paced at Oregon," James said, "and I'm pretty used to the tempo."

49ers Say QB Alex Smith Has Shown “Dramatic Improvements” To His Throwing Motion

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh mentioned that QB Alex Smith has made “dramatic improvements” to his throwing motion, via the San Jose Mercury News. Smith has been meeting with Tom House, a motion specialist and former major league pitcher, to correct ”two mechanical flaws” in his motion during the offseason, and it appears that the results are encouraging. Even a slightly improved Alex Smith would go a long way in the team’s offense, especially when you consider that they’ve added a number of weapons to their roster during the offseason.

Ben Roethlisberger Says 49ers Were Overly Aggressive With His Injured Ankle

Ben Roethlisberger said he suspected the San Francisco 49ers targeted his sprained left ankle in a regular-season game last year, but the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback did not think the team participated in any foul play. Asked about the last time he felt an opposing team was trying to cause or exacerbate a specific injury, Roethlisberger brought up last season's 20-3 loss to the 49ers in Week 16. Roethlisberger threw three interceptions and fumbled twice in the game while playing with a high ankle sprain. "Um, wow, that's tough," Roethlisberger said on The Dan Patrick Show, via Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "I don't really complain about that stuff, either. But I think when we played San Fran, I felt like there were some things going on, some extra ... Now, obviously, I did have the ankle and I was playing, so there was kind of a bulls-eye on there anyway. But for the most part, guys play tough and you go into a game expecting it. I expect to be tougher than them."
