NFL Draft Senior Bowl Report Stock Up, Stock Down

Stock Up:

QB Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma St.)

Weeden reportedly had a great week. He threw the ball alot better than any other QB by a large distance. He showed what you would think a 29 year old QB should show off- brains and maturity. Interviews were knocked out of the park by Weeden. He had a bad SR. bowl game but had a fantastic week of practice.

DE Quinton Coples (UNC)

His stock has been up and down for years now. He had an up and down college career and came into the week in Mobile with alot of questions about his consistency. Leaving Mobile, he silenced critics with a nice week that showcased just how elite of a talent he is.

DE/OLB Courtney Upshaw (Bama)

Upshaw was an elite player before this week but helped himself by having an elite week. He proved he could play 4-3 end as well as his usual spot of 3-4 OLB.

RB Doug Martin (Boise St.)

From the moment he arrived in Alabama, showcasing a chiseled physique, he impressed scouts and coaches. He then further impressed in practices with power and doing all the little things right. He may have worked his way into the late 1st round.

CB Janoris Jenkins (N.Bama)

Jenkins was kicked out of Florida for smoking weed. However, at N.Bama he kept his nose clean and interviewed well at the Sr. Bowl stating that he doesn't smoke or hang out with people that do. On the field he showed off the ability everyone already knew he had. This was important as he had a mediocre year this year.

QB Kellen Moore (Boise St.)

Moore had a terrible week. Things never turned around for him. He measured in well short of 6'0, he showed a lack of arm strength, a lack of mobility, and a lack of accuracy on longer throws.

WR Brian Quick (App. St.)

Being a guy from a small school is tough. Quick was seen as a great prospect before this week. However, following the week he may slip quite a way. He had many an uncharacteristic drop and didn't show that much quickness off the line.

CB Alfonzo Dennard (Nebraska)

Dennard is more of a gamer anyway and is only good for certain press coverage schemes. However, this week he showed tight hips, a lack of speed, and didn't make it through the week. Many now have the mindset he will have to move to Safety.

QB Nick Foles (Arizona)

I'm a huge fan of Foles. I don't know why he had a bad week of practice. I was really disappointed. The biggest knock on him is a lack of consistency which I saw on film but never imagined it would be quite as bad as it was in Mobile. He does have some great positives but looks more and more like a mid 2nd round guy, depending on need.

RB Chris Polk (Washington)

Another guy I'm a big fan of. Coming into the week I thought for sure he was a 1st round guy. Yeah I saw on film he struggles with pass blocking but most young guys do. However, I never imagined he would struggle with his acceleration. That was one of the things I really liked about him on film. Rumor is he gained some weight but if it's affecting his acceleration he needs to take it off as soon as possible and rehab his draft stock.

Dissapointed about Dennard

Its gonna be interesting to see if Jenkins winds up going ahead of Kirkpatrick.

Im really trying to like Upshaw, but I dont trust him not to another Anthony Spencer. I feel the same about Ingram if he were to play OLB in a 3-4

I don't see how he will. I would put the odds very low.

Spencer hasn't exactly been a bust....

He hasnt in a way, but he hasnt lived up to what he was drafted to be.

I think he will be much better once he leaves Dallas and puts his hand in the dirt where it belongs. He isnt quick of the snap enough to justify getting consistent rush attempts in a 3-4. I think that could be Upshaws fate as well.

Ingram too, but Im very interested in him if we add more 4 man lines to our hybrid. He has the versitilty to be a real weapon in any type of multiple front defense. Couples as well, but I dont think he can stand like Ingram

Kirkpatrick could suffer the big character drop due to timing.

If they were all choir boys, I still think Jenkins is only the third best in the class, but I think the timing of Kirkpatricks offense could lead to a very surprising drop

Upshaw has rare power though. I do agree he lacks elite athleticism but he is just so powerful.

Yeah I understand it's a good point.

BTW, just read a Wes Bunting interview on Jenkins on Ye Olde Homer board. Bunting wasnt shy about his love of Jenkins

Ill post this here as its Senior Bowl stuff

Quote:
Cowboys Nation: Let's move to cornerback. Janoris Jenkins played really well this week. Where does this move him now? When you debuted your draft board in November, he was the top senior corner, based solely on play. But it's no secret, this guy has some major off-field questions to answer.

I have to think the juniors Claiborne and Kirkpatrick will go 1-2 at this position, but has Janoris Jenkins played himself back into the 3rd spot?

Wes Bunting: Yeah. He was just so tough to separate from all week. But he's part of this evaluation struggle for me. I like these smaller, quicker corner types who can stick with you, but there were a number of times where he's position to make a play and [Jeff] Fuller, who couldn't separate from anyone all week, doesn't have any space on Jenkins, but he's able to go up and make a play on the football. Granted he dropped it all week, but if he's catching the ball, you wonder how great a top end Jenkins will have as an NFL corner?

Now, Jenkins made a lot of plays. He's a first round talent, no question. It's just tough to take a corner who's 5'9'' and change overly high, when there are all these tall receivers, but from a coverage standpoint? From a separation standpoint? This guy was a plus.

CN: Where does Jenkins sit now in the first? Give me your assessment and any others that you heard in Mobile. He's obviously a first rounder, but how high can he rise after this week?

WB: I would say, 15 to 25. Somewhere in there.

CN: I saw a big mock today with him going 14 to Dallas.

WB: That's fair, because the one thing I heard from Dallas people is that they were focusing on DBs, first and foremost...

CN: Let's go the next set of guys. Stephon Gilmore is an underclassman, so he wasn't there, but it sounds like the next group of guys played well, the Casey Heywards, the Jamell Flemings, the Brandon Boykins.

WB: Yeah, those three were the best of the bunch, of that second tier. Fleming I thought was solid in his drops. I thought he was the worst of those three, but he had a solid week. Heyward was a bit limited when they asked him to play a ton of press, because he's not overly quick. But as a cover-2 who can track the football, he was clean in and out of his breaks. Plus he can turn and run a bit. I thought he was very good.

And Boykin? If Jenkins was number one, Boykin was a close number two. He was physical. He was strong in press, and he did a better job as the week went on collecting himself and staying low out of his breaks, which allowed him to close faster. I thought he had a very good week as well.

CN: I heard Josh Norman was a late addition to the Senior Bowl, after his big Shrine game week, but he didn't arrive until Thursday. Did you get a chance to watch him practice?

WB: No. We left on Thursday, and that day's workouts were indoors, with no pads, because of the tornadoes down there. The first day you'll see him is in the game.

CN: Can you give us any other corners from the practices who caught your attention, either good or bad?

WB: Dwight Bentley, from Louisiana-Lafayette, was a tough little son-of-a-gun to separate from. He wasn't overly tough on game tape, but he was physical this week. He's 5'11'', 176, so he's this skinny kid, but he can turn and run. He can cover. He's balanced. He wasn't intimidated by those big receivers. I had a priority free agent to late-round-pick grade on him coming in. I thought he was better than guys who I had given better grades, so I'm going to move Bentley up.

CN: That's good to know. Since corner is such a priority I think the Cowboys may take at least two, maybe three, the way they drafted offensive linemen last year, one early, one middle, one late. We need names to track in those later rounds.

I'm not as high on Bunting as I used to be. He is still good but not great like I thought he was.
