Giants WR Domenik Hixon To IR After Clearing Waivers

Wide receiver/kick returner Domenik Hixon cleared waivers this week, a league source said Saturday, so the New York Giants will place him on season-ending injured reserve. The Giants put Hixon on the waived/injured list Thursday, one month after he suffered a right anterior cruciate ligament tear during the team's first practice at New Meadowlands Stadium. The Giants risked losing Hixon's rights by waiving him, though it's rare for players to be claimed while they're dealing with a long-term injury. Hixon's contract expires after the 2010 season. He will be paid his $1.684 million salary while on IR.

So here is why the Giants did what they did... I was wondering what the actual motivation was. Interesting...

Quote:
The Giants could have put Hixon directly on Injured Reserve, but his salary would have been counted against the team's training camp salary. By letting him pass through waivers, his salary is now off the the Giants cap but remains property of the team.
