[Giants] Double Suspension Puts Plaxico Burress In Bind

Tuesday’s decision by the Giants both to suspend receiver Plaxico Burress and to place him on the non-football injury/illness seemed a bit excessive on the surface, kind of like hunting termites with a .40-caliber Glock. But it was, in our view, a brilliant maneuver by the Giants, with a T.O.-style grievance and arbitration hearing inevitable if the team had gone in either direction, the Giants gave themselves two bites at the bozo who brought a loaded handgun into the Big Apple. In order to recover any of the $823,000 in remaining base salary for 2008 (and/or any of the per-game roster bonus money that he would have received if on the active roster and/or his playoff share), Burress will have to prevail in not one but two grievances.

Well, without him, the Giants probably don't get to and win the Superbowl. He's an idiot and is getting what he deserves, but he was pretty valuable to them on the field before this incident and certainly last season. Plaxico was still worth signing even if they have to deal with all this nonsense now.

Thing is, the Giants have been fine with and without him this season and they are in the perfect position to cut him and take a minimum cap hit if they choose to do so. He's not the make or break player for this team...they're just as good without him as they are with him.
