[Ravens] NFL Fines Titans Center Kevin Mawae, OT David Stewart

The NFL fined Titans center Kevin Mawae and tackle David Stewart for excessive hits, including blocks that injured linebacker Shawne Merriman, in Sunday's loss to the Chargers. Mawae was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness because he struck his opponent (Merriman) late on a pass play. Stewart was fined $12,500 for two unnecessary roughness penalties — for striking an opponent (Merriman) late on a pass play and shoving an opponent late on another play. Mawae and Stewart combined to block Merriman in the second quarter, knocking him out of the game with a knee injury. Merriman later accused them of a cheap shot, although neither player was flagged. Merriman has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Lions. Mawae and Stewart had not been made aware of the fines when the media was permitted in the locker room Friday and could not be reached for comment later.
