[49ers] 49ers Sign Veteran QB Chris Weinke

Desperate for quarterback help, the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday signed veteran Chris Weinke. The move was necessitated due to the injuries to Alex Smith and Trent Dilfer. Smith, who has not played since a 24-0 loss at Seattle on November 12, was placed on season-ending injured reserve Wednesday and will undergo surgery on Thursday to correct a third-degree separation of his right shoulder. Dilfer, the 49ers' starter for the past four games, was knocked out of last week's 27-7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings with a concussion. Shaun Hill likely will make his first career start for the 49ers on Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals, with Weinke serving as the backup. Hill, who had never thrown a pass in an NFL game, replaced Dilfer last week and completed 22-of-28 passes for 180 yards with a touchdown and interception. Released by the Carolina Panthers in March, the 34-year-old Weinke has played in only six games the last three years.
