Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril has been quite talkative in recent weeks, telling SiriusXM NFL Radio that hometown discounts don't exist in the NFL and hinting at a holdout should he receive the franchise tag. In a chat with MLive.com, the defensive end said he hopes to remain a part of the franchise's turnaround. "I want to be with Detroit. I want to be a part of the reason why we're winning. Also, people have to understand it is a business," Avril wrote. "When you're not producing, they definitely let you go. When you're producing, you should be compensated. That's what a lot of people fail to realize. As far as being a football player, being with the city of Detroit and on the team, I definitely want to be here. We just have to come to some type of agreement eventually." Avril's frustration with playing under the franchise tag may be difficult for Lions fans to digest, but it's understandable. The tender is worth around $10.5 million in guaranteed base salary, which is considerably more than the 2008 third-round pick from Purdue has earned during his four-year career, but is less than a third of the guaranteed money that Carolina Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson received last off-season. .
