Chiefs Sign CB Stanford Routt To A 3-Year, $20M Deal

Free agent cornerback Stanford Routt has agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports the deal is worth $20 million over three seasons. Routt signed a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Oakland Raiders last March, but was released the day before his $5 million base salary in 2012 was to be guaranteed. The signing of Routt could lead to the end of Brandon Carr's tenure with the Chiefs. Carr was a candidate to receive the franchise tag this off-season, but with a cost of around $10.5 million in guaranteed base salary, seems unlikely with the amount of money directed towards Routt and starting cornerback Brandon Flowers, who signed a $48.75 million contract extension last September.

how interesting... KC's secondary will have Flowers, Routt, Berry (SS) and McGraw? (FS)... I would say that'll be an improvement over last year... That is if Berry comes back 100% ...

Really too bad that Oakland had to release Routt, but it looks like a new regime has Oakland going down a different road.

Despite being near the top in cap space, the Chiefs felt like having two CBs making 50+ mil isn't a good idea. I hope they still franchise him. Maybe we get picks.

I wanted him, but I wanted him at like 3 million per

The amount of PI's and TDs he gave up even with a VERY good YPA is just too much of a question to give a starter contract to someone

I saw Routt as a great candidate to get a 1 year deal, because he's got skills, but he seriously needs to reign himself in
